He's got hardly anything to work with.

It only takes one or two players to make a huge difference

The way he runs his game, he needs a minimum of 8 good players.

Elaborate please.

Losing Rojas, Quinerly, and Gary before the season hurt this team a lot. I don't think Oats was planning on playing Galin Smith as much as he's had to lately.

He runs a very fast paced offense, runs the floor, all while playing an aggressive, pressing defense. You gotta keep fresh bodies in the game, and take into account that with that style of defense there's bound to be some foul trouble. I love his style of play, but realize that that it takes numbers to be successful.
edit: I certainly agree that we've had terrible luck with our roster, but he's gonna have to come up with some good ball handlers to make his offense work.

Yea, it will take him at least as long as it took Pearl.

He'll have the bodies next year unless the injury bug hits us again. He had the bodies this year, but lost 2 to injury and one to the awful NCAA.

He's still got to recruit some kids that are a better fit for his type of game. I'm saying this, the guy's gonna get it done here if we give him our full support.

I can agree with that. Not sure if he needs 8 players minimum to bee successful. Adding a guy like Quinerly would take the pressure off Kira.

We were also banking on guys like Reese, Petty, and Herb progressing, and they're clearly incapable of that.

If anybody watched the last 2 minutes of this game, you'll understand what I'm talking about...not very good, nor bright.

With the exception of Lewis, there doesn't look to be a kid that's dressed out that should be able to play on this team in 3 years.

While we're chasing five stars, I hope Oats is recruiting a midwest gym rat or two. Preferably from Indiana.

The thing about this type of basketball is you're not required to have a bunch of 5*s to win big.

I don't know much about basketball, but it would seem feasible for a good to great coach to be able to rebuild even the worst bball program from scratch in just a year or 2. Am I way off base there?

Auburn was a dumpster fire when Pearl arrived there. It took him 3 years before they were in the upper tier of the SEC. Bama's roster isn't much better and Nate plays an up tempo style at least remotely similar to Pearl. I'm not sure all of Bruce's work at Auburn has been above board considering his history and even then, it took 3 classes to get his guys on the floor.

Oats said this is a tourney team. Now that was before injuries, but if it takes 3 years to be a competent team, something has gone very wrong or he’s a poor recruiter.

Auburn’s program was historically bad when Pearl came in. In no way, shape, or fashion is what Oats inherited and what Pearl inherited comparable.

Yeah, it should be much better next year. I think the main issue is the 360 switch in offensive philosophies. We’re not ready to play fast and it shows. I’d be surprised if we’re even a bubble team this year though.

I believe so. Even a great coach would have to be very lucky to really turn things around in 2 years. It took Pearl @ Auburn 3 years to do it, and neither coach inherited much of anything to start with.
