They left off Byron Murphy who was basically the West Coast version of Deionte too. It's pretty clear that their particular style of safety was not the preference of the editorial staff that picked the final lists.

No Irv Smith either. The TE from A&M is good but I don't think he's as good as Irv.

Irv didn't get love from anyone though, hard to standout at tight end with our WR group. I do agree he was one of the two best receiving tight ends in the country and he got zero recognition.

In their defense (pun intended), there are 130 teams in CFB, each with 2 starting Safeties. That's 260 dudes. I love me some Thompson, but I can't say for sure that he's one of the 2 best safeties in CFB out of 260 guys. There are some really good safeties out there.
Also, some guys have inflated numbers compared to some of our guys, frequently because they play on defenses that see more plays over the course of a season.
We can't really expect every awesome player for us to be considered by everyone to one of the best 2 guys, and then get all offended when other players are shown respect. A lot of other teams have guys who would be awesome at Bama, too.

Freshman All American Team
WR Jaylen Waddle, Alabama: Waddle emerged as a big-time playmaker despite being the newcomer in a loaded receiving corps featuring returning standouts Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs III, DeVonta Smith and Irv Smith. Waddle has caught 41 passes for 803 yards — an average of 19.6 yards per catch — with seven touchdowns, and he ranks sixth nationally in punt return average (15.1) with one touchdown.
CB Patrick Surtain II, Alabama: The son of a former Pro Bowl cornerback, Surtain moved into Alabama’s starting lineup by the end of September and wasted no time making an impact with an interception in his first start against Texas A&M. Even though he’s a freshman, he has seen minimal targets from opposing quarterbacks and has allowed just 13 catches on 41 targets, according to Sports Info Solutions.
