Nailed it.

I sleep on my side. Had this same issue.

I work in surgery and a "tear" here or there going unnoticed is a little out of the ordinary. Add that to the fact that you're probably not the young pup you used to be Cobrasize...

It'll be gone by Oct. if you don't do the regimen Boz mentioned.

If your arm hurts when you lift it over your head then don’t lift it over your head anymore. LOL.

No really, just cut your arm off at the shoulder and you’ll be fine.

Could be rotator cuff, which if you need surgery, it's one of the worst in terms of pain and recovery. If it's not a rotator cuff tear, it could be, depending on your age, just arthritis and bone spurs. Could be bicep tendon issues. I have had it all. Am facing a total shoulder replacement in a few years. Get an MRI and see what the issue is. A few weeks of PT sometimes helps. Dry needling (similar to accupunture) sometimes helps. I'd probably avoid a chiropractor.

This is crazy, I just went through the same thing. Problem is, I am left-handed so it messed with so much of my active lifestyle. Like you, I woke up with the pain one day with no explanation of what caused it. It was hard for me to put on shirts or lay on the couch. It dulled eventually and I could deal with it, but many daily actions were inconvenient or painful. I actively play basketball and would shoot through the pain. well, it ended up getting bad again. I ended up living with it for almost two years until it flared up again recently and I finally got an MRI, fearing it was the rotator cuff. Well, turned out it was shoulder bursitis, or swelling of the bursa, which is a small fluid sac in between the muscles and bones. My doctor gave me a steroid injection in the shoulder and it had helped tremendously. I'm currently doing some physical therapy exercise to build up the strength and stability of that shoulder. I'm hoping the steroid will heal it long term. I would act sooner rather than later. I think I complicated my situation by continue to be active and agitate for as long as I did.

Well, unless there was an event or some kind of repeated trauma its probably not a tear.

Whats more likely is-

If you sleep on your side, (like i do) the pressure on that shoulder's tendons against underlying bone can cause them to become inflamed. Its called an impingement. I experienced this about two years ago, and my shoulder has never been the same. First of all it literally took an entire year or more to beat the inflammation. I was on the verge of seeking a cortisone shot.

Now it flares up every time I put any zip on a baseball, football, or disc.

I take ibuprofen before and after playing, and I have my shoulder in a cold compress wrap asap after throwing. Once it flares up its hell to get rid of, and can take months.

Best thing to do is go to an orthopedic MD and see what you are dealing with. Find out what your options are, maybe PT or something else will help you.

The surgery and rehab are not a pleasant experience, let me tell you. But if you have to go there, good luck.

Same here... I had a distal clavicle resection performed on my left shoulder in 2007 (at age 41) and it still bothers me. My problem was a misdiagnosed injury that became arthritic over time and was cumulative from years of exercise and activity. Good luck to anyone who must deal with a joint injury, they are no bueno.

NO. A chiropractor is not qualified to diagnose or treat this type of possible injury.

Go see an orthopedist or sports medicine physician. It sounds like you have at least impingement of your rotator cuff tendons, if not a tear. Impingement is inflammation of the tendon as it passes between a bony space framed by your shoulder blade and collar bone. It’s a very common cause of chronic pain as you get older from arthritic changes. It’s managed with steroid injections and PT to strengthen your rotator cuff muscles, and if it fails they would proceed to a “subacromial decompression” surgery where they shave the bone back so it’s not shearing the tendon. If you have a cuff tear, which you might based on how you describe the weakness rather then just pain, they still usually shave the bone back during the repair. The other possibility is something like a bicep or triceps muscle tear.

Long story short, go see a doctor to start your work up and direct any rehab therapy, not a chiropractor

If you have that kind of chronic nature to it, I would strongly suggest just proceeding to surgery so as to prevent the chronic inflammation from provoking a formal tear of one of the rotator cuff tendons (usually supraspintous muscle) over time. Recovery from an isolated decompression procedure without a cuff tear is pretty easy. I’ve had both shoulders done and been back performing surgery on people in < 2 days both times.

Thank you all for your answers. I’ve read them all and I’ve decided to gnaw my arm off and grow a new one lol.

Nah, I know I need to bite the bullet and go to the Dr. I just hate it. One of my biggest fears is going to the Dr for something like this and there not being anything wrong. Then they think you are just there for the drugs. I hate taking meds, but they don’t know that.

To summarize, I’m a big wussy, because I’m scared nothing will be wrong and the doctor will think I’m a druggie. shite, I’d be willing to take a drug test if they would let me. Hell, I still have antibiotics from 2003 when I had blood poisoning from having a rusty hunk of metal go into my leg lol

ust make sure you get a good chiropractor. My husband went to one with his back and she almost crippled him for life. He hurt so bad after her visit I had to take him to the emergency room.

my brother in law went to a chiropractor because he was having pain around the upper torso and shoulder, especially when raising his arms, and the chiropractor strung him along with "therapy" for a pinched nerve for months. The better part of the year if I remember correctly. Turns out it was cancer and it eventually killed him. Perhaps those months might have made a difference.

I seriously doubt that any doctor would get that impression. Unless you've been there for similar stuff a few too many times.

Going to the doctors while we are still standing upright isn't a guy thing but your condition sounds like it's time. Wish you well man.

No relief, but thank you for asking. I haven’t had a chance to go. Between work, and I had a childhood friend die at 46 on Saturday, I really just have to work around it. This is just a bad year. Been friends with the guy for 38 years.

i had left shoulder pain and couldn't lift my arm over my head without pain. went to a shoulder specialist at the ms sports medicine clinic. he turned me, twisted me, stretched me, etc. then says “it’s not your shoulder.” i thought he was crazy.
he sent me down the hall to the spine specialist. he did an mri and told me it was disc damage in my neck. i scheduled a surgery and he replaced discs 3, 4, and 5.
that was in 2013 and my shoulder hasn't hurt since.

A chiropractor isn't an actual doctor. Just to kind of clarify that, it's basically snake oil. You should never go to a chiropractor first. They don't receive any form of medical training whatsoever and studies show it's essentially useless. I'm still not sure why it has such a big following in the states, but then again acupuncture is a thing in Asia.

This sounds like impingement or something is torn. I would go to an ortho, if you can't raise your arm then a doctor is going to realize that very quickly based on the movement tests they'll have you do. They'll probably direct you to an MRI and go from there.

I also wouldn't sit on this and wait, because if it's something like a rotator cuff you could cause damage to your biceps tendon as well.

I'll throw my 2 cents worth in also...if you will take your right hand and slam it in the car door 3 or 4 times really really hard, you will forget all about the pain in your left shoulder, and every other pain you have. It works for me every time.

Seriously though, my fiancee had a case similar to yours. Turned out to be frozen shoulder, not saying yours is just that the symptoms were very similar. My point is, I highly
highly recommend that, if you can, go to Andrews Institute. I can't stress it enough, DO IT. SHe went to a few local orthos and they wanted to do surgery immediately to see if they could "...see what the issue was". We went to Andrews in Gulf Shores, had all the tests and MRI done, diagnosed it almost immediately and sent her to PT for a couple of months, which didn't work, before he finally decided to do surgery.

It was crazy b/c I was expecting to be more miserable than her b/c of the pain level we had heard/expected for her and dreaded the thought of playing nurse. She had a nerve block the first 3 days after surgery, very little pain meds and then after that, very very little pain. I kid you not, worth the drive over and back from Gulf Shores and will never go anywhere else for anything. Have sent 3 other people there, all with same results.

I attribute it to Dr. Jordan at Andrews Institute and his skill level so I can't push you enough to them. Don't even waste your time with any other orthos, go to Andrews in B'ham, same group of orthos as Gulf Shores. And no, I don't work for, nor am I making any money from them for this post. I just couldn't believe how well her surgery and recovery went resulting in her 100% shoulder movement she achieved. Again, Andrews Institute is legit and I can see why a huge majority of athletes go to them for their issues.

Hope you get better soon.
