I mean, don't go all Mike Leach but the receiving corp is our most dangerous group of skilled talent on the roster. Bold statement with the elite backfield we have but with Tua being the man now we can go four wide and devastate a defense even when they are in dime.

We have four ultra elite receivers and a quarterback that can get them the ball. Getting the ball to Waddle in open space is better than a five yard run up the gut. Killing teams through the a air will set up huge holes for the running backs.

I guess I am thinking out loud.

Saban has historically emphasized balance from the offense. If that means we average rushing for 250-300 YPG and passing for 250-300 YPG, I can recalibrate my expectations. I'm sure there will be games where we exceed 400 YPG in one or both categories but over the course of the season, bet on the two numbers converging to find that sought-after balance.

Damnit, Data. We are running an RPO offense that gives Tua the ability to check to the best option when he reads the defense. It was on full display Saturday. The slant to Smith was a check. He saw the LBs up and coming to blitz, he PAed to suck them in and hit Smith. He will pass when there are 8-9 in the box and he will hand it off when the box has 7 or less. It is that simple.

Yep, if they are gonna load the box to stop the run and play a bunch of man to man with no help - hit them over the top. If they want to play zone and all, we should be able to march down the field rushing the ball.

ETA: I'd prefer the latter, less hits to the qb.

No, The offense will always be running first team. Tua brings the passing offense to another level. It's many way Bama team can beat you.. whether it's through running game, passing game, etc.

The key to understanding what Bama is trying to do, and what all teams should try to do, is have balance. Now, most people interpret this to mean close to 50/50 split of run plays and pass plays, but this is an oversimplification.

The goal is to be balanced enough scheme-wise to be willing and able to run the ball OR throw the ball in most any situation (relatively speaking), and have your film back that up, such that the opposing DC gets put into binds regarding defensive calls and alignment.

Throwing a corner route is much different if you run it out of 4 Wide or out of 2 Wide, 2 Tight - given how the defense will choose to line up. Similarly, a simple off-tackle play is much different out of 4 wide or 2 wide, 2 tight. To further the problem for the defense, if an OC is willing to run the ball on passing downs, or throw on first down, the DC's job becomes all the more difficult. Motion is yet another headache for those trying to get the D lined up.

And so, the simple gist of it is that in order for the passing game to be it's most effective self, the run game must exist, must exist out of passing sets in addition to rushing sets, and must exist on passing downs. This makes the DC have to pick one and show his hand, or water down his defense of both simultaneously. In a perfect world, Bama wants to run against Nickel/Dime and throw against Base. We can't always do that obviously, but it quickly becomes clear that lining up in 4 and 5 wide all game and throwing it 50 times will put the D into defensive sets that are to their advantage.

And so, our pursuit of balance is solely to keep the DC (and defensive playcallers/captains) off-balance.

That pass and the two QB runs for TDs are indicative of what kind of offense Lockley will call. Those plays are what has defensive coordinators across the country unable to sleep at night.

Once the OL gels Bama will be able to run or pass with equal efficiency. There's no need to espouse one philosophy over another.

This ain't Coker.

I'd like to see them let Tua air it out.

If a football team can't trust HIM to air it out, then nobody should ever air it out again.

What they did Saturday was fantastic. Balanced attack and Tua was throwing it all over the yard.

CD I know what you're saying, and I agree. There's not a team out there that can stop our passing game - I don't care what defense they play, or if they know it's coming. Tua is damn near NFL level.
Many of our best plays vs Louisville came on 3rd and long in obvious passing situations.

This is why I kind of wish Brian Kelly were here. We could actually run the Tom Brady offense with Tua out there.
Idk about air-raid, but I think we should start thinking in terms of a lot more deep route trees, and NFL style playcalling

My memory of Coker was run, run, run, play action to try for some deep bomb that he isn't going to hit. Then next series run, run, roll out and try to throw a laser to a sliding receiver on the sideline 6 inches past the first down line. Coker obviously become a massive asset, but you get my point. Maybe

Tua is so much more and better than that.
