You forgot Fleming. He is 6-9 268lbs. He will try to replace Hall.

Given the all or nothing approach it seemed like Battle took, we got lucky to get Avery and not someone much worse.

When Marshall declined I was fully resigned to Philip Pearson being named HC and being right back in the coaching carousel by 2018

In roller coaster terms, this is the slow, exciting ascent up the biggest hill before you go screaming down the other side.

Avery has been masterful at getting our hopes up and getting us to buy in thru January. I think he’s done it every year. We’ve got about 2 more weeks of quality basketball and things will be looking good before the mid February fade when the wheels come off.

Since we were on the subject of Barnes...his first two years at UTenn weren't good, just like Johnson's first two years. They didn't even get invited to the NIT.

Last year's end result was the same. Both made it to the second round of the NCAAT. They got eliminated by Loyola-Chi, and we got eliminated by the eventual National Champion.

This year, Tennessee is obviously one of the top teams in the country, but we clearly can go toe-to-toe with them, and we should've beat them at their place. I know that one of your points is that there are too many "should haves," and I agree with you about that, not just this season, but for the past several seasons of Alabama basketball. However, I still want to see how this season plays out before I become fully unbuckled.

I just don’t quite understand why people are trying to get rid of Avery, when we’ve gotten better every single season he’s been here, and look even better next season.

We've gone 18-15, 19-15, and 20-16. So technically, our winning percentage decreased from year 2 to 3. Therefore your statement of "we've gotten better every single season" is not really true.

It hurts posting that record above and someone actually arguing he's done a really good job.

I think people are mainly just frustrated that it's been so long without a season better than the "bubble". . .

However, I do agree that Avery has improved every season so far.

Also agree that he's not far off in that recruiting is sold and it's not a big step to just begin to have our better seasons here and there result in 4-5 type NCAA seeds . . .

At that point, you always have a fighting chance at a deep very tourney run (especially since Avery has also shown he can scheme to compete against top teams) and that helps land more high level recruits.

I do think that we may have an issue scheming around Hall's absence next year. Hall is at least an honorable mention All-SEC level center in my opinion and the team's going to look a lot different next year without that kind of athleticism in the paint.

Not saying I expect a bad year. The potential to have more shooters/ball handlers on the court is there. However, I'm not sure that'll automatically result in a stronger team if we have trouble defending in the paint.

Would saying we’ve gone from 96, to 56, to 57 in kenpom ratings from 2016-2018 help you out?

I'm just saying, going from not making the NCAAT at all, to making the NCAAT as a 9 seed seems like a clear improvement.

While making the NCAA tournament and advancing is the ultimate goal, it doesn’t definitively make one team better than another, especially when it comes to metrics. This year’s team may have the best KenPom ratings under Johnson but miss the tournament due to the same predictable losses we continue to have. I hope that’s not the case but we’ve done it to ourselves.

Before going into advanced metrics etc etc --as useful as those can be -- I can watch with my eyes and see that this team is better than last year's just like I could see last years was better than the year before.

Can't really see how anyone who watches the game can really argue this.

However, the issue is whether the "better" teams are necessarily getting better results often enough and that's what the metrics likely bear out.

The losses to poor / average teams at home continues to be an issue. (I know all teams lose these type games here and there but still imagine our % of these losses is probably larger than average).

However, this is, to my mind, the season where we can seriously judge Avery since even the coaches everyone gushes over often took 3-4 years to establish their better teams.

And, this season is just now getting into make or break territory and we are coming off two pretty impressive performances at that.

Yeah, it would seem Fleming has a good shot to be in the rotation at center next year.

However, I hope I'm wrong but I tend to see Fleming as much more a Galin Smith type. A big body that can add some offensive production but not the athletic, shot altering nightmare for opposing offenses Hall is. Hall's really an All SEC caliber player to my mind.

Ok, forget wins, kenpom, rpi, tourney or no tourney, etc, here’s an easy way to visualize the positive impact Avery is having on Alabama Basketball. He inherited garbage at 1st, and look at the growth of the talent on his rosters from year to year.

Year1

PG: Retin Obasahan/Justin Coleman
SG: Arthur Edwards/Brandon Austin
SF: Shannon Hale/Riley Norris
PF: Michael Kessens
C: Jimmie Taylor/Donta Hall

Year 2

PG: Dazon Ingram/Corban Collins/Avery Jr
SG: Ar’Mond Davis/Brandon Austin
SF: Braxton Key/Riley Norris
PF: Bola Olaniyan/Shannon Hale
C: Jimmie Taylor/Donta Hall

Year 3

PG: Collin Sexton/Avery Jr
SG: John Petty
SF: Herbert Jones/Dazon Ingram
PF: Braxton Key/Alex Reeese
C: Donta Hall/Daniel Giddens

Year 4

PG: Kira Lewis/Avery Jr
SG: Dazon Ingram/John Petty
SF: Herbert Jones/Riley Norris
PF: Tevin Mack/Alex Reese
C: Donta Hall/Galin Smith

Projected Year 5

PG: Kira Lewis/Jaden Shackelford/Dazon Ingram
SG: John Petty/Jaylen Forbes/Diante Wood
SF: Trendon Watford/Juwan Gary
PF: Herbert Jones/Tevin Mack
C: Galin Smith/Alex Reese

^^ I see a trend here, and that trend is every season a newer team would kick the arse of the team from the year before. Avery is bringing in talent, major talent, look at year 5 talent compared to year 1. Bringing in talent is half the battle.

Now, when he gets a roster of his long, athletic shooters, the coaching will also improve. Sorry arse Bola & Ar’Mond Davis can’t run what Avery wants to run. Patience please, we are turning into a football AND basketball school. Enjoy the ride

Another late game collapse by our team against someone we coulda shoulda woulda beat. Another loss we can’t afford. Another end of game where Bama was outcoached.

Ship Avery to the Pelicans and bring Steve Prohm home.
