Saban's former head coach rehab: successor tryouts?

A lot has been said about the coach rehab thing, which I think is honorable and a testament to his leadership. It takes a special kind of strong, high performance minded leader to essentially appoint others who have been in his shoes as his subordinates.
That being said, I wonder if Saban is evaluating these guys to see if they're cut out to succeed him when he finally does decide to retire? It's likely more possible that he's passing down "The Process" as his lasting legacy. Some of these guys will lead programs again at some point (and some have).
Here are former HCs who have been brought in after their tenures as HC:
Lane Kiffin
Steve Sarkisian
Mike Stoops
Major Applewhite (Saban's first OC at Bama)
Butch Jones
Kyle Flood
Charlie Strong
These guys have all been HCs at high levels with marginal success. It would be interesting to see how they fare post-"rehab"

You forgot the real successor Mario Cristobal. He had been a head coach before coming to Bama.

Sark and Mario look like the most viable Saban successor candidates, imo.

The more I see and hear about Mario Cristobal, the more I like him. I think he could be a legit contender to be our next coach.
Wouldn't surprise me if they test the waters with Dabo (they'd be crazy not to try) but when he says no, quickly lock down Cristobal.

Nah. He just likes getting the best people he can for the positions.
It's part of the reason why we have so much staff turnover. It's not just because they coached under Saban, although the Saban bump is real. It's because they are usually already pretty talented in their own ways which is why Saban has interest in them to start with.
And in that sense, it's not unlikely that one of them could one day end up being a successor. But is he trying them out now? No.

I've always believed in the Bama Bump. And unlike the disdain that often comes with it from other fan bases it has, it's own scientific merit. Most recruiting gurus believe with all their hearts that coach Saban knows football players. Every time the NFL draft is held it only confirms their belief system. Recruits are quick to boldly proclaim they have an offer from the Crimson Tide, committable or not. They believe in the "Bama bump."
It makes just as much sense that the coaches and staff get the same "Bump." Is it as scientific, maybe? For every Kirby Smart seems to be a few more Will Muschamp's. But nobody can take their eyes off all our first-round draft picks long enough to see most of the Bama players heading to the secular world. Buyer beware.

Add to the list Kevin Steele and Locks as former HCs. (For the second part of your post; no, neither of them are potential successors.

Thanks, and I agree.
All in all, I think that this is one of the more fascinating elements of this dynasty

I think some of you are selling Pruitt short. He walked into the worst dumpster fire in UT history and it looks like he may finally turn the corner this year and be competitive. He’s one to still keep an eye on.
Cristobal walked into a decent situation in a glorified G5 conference and still manages to shite the bed in games that matter. That bothers me. He seems to be a good coach but can’t make that jump to elite/dominant even though he is currently the de facto premier program in the PAC12.
Sark is leaving Tuscaloosa as soon as the right job comes along. He wants to go back west and will.
