Rewatching the 2009 Texas game

I would give a leg to have a Rolando McClain at Bama until the end of time. He got a personal foul at the goal line on their first drive on first and goal. He then put the fear of God into his teammates. You could see it in his body language. Got right into Cody’s face. Texas had to kick a field goal. I love how our defense has responded since the OM game, but those dudes were for all intents and purposes a completely different generation. I miss the anger and malice.
Side note: quite a few Alabamians starting on that squad. These next two classes are loaded in state. We need to clean up

I watched these highlights last night, too.
Rollo was a one in a million athlete.

If Ro had come back in 2010, Bama probably wins 4 straight titles from 09-12.

Ro easily would have been a HOF NFL player if he wanted it.

With Bama's uncharacteristically terrible special teams play and GMac's injury limitations, the defense really carried the team that game.

No doubt in my mind

That fake punt early was terrible.

I thought Ro and Reuben were sure fire 10+ year All Pro NFL players. Both were some of the most athletic, violent, fast, and instinctive players I’ve ever seen play the position. To this day, I still can’t believe that both of their careers turned out how they have.

Look at the organizations that they ended up in and the point in time when they got there. Oakland was a total mess top to bottom and provided Ro no guidance on how to be a pro and develop.
Reuben got to San Fran as they were in the middle of a massive shift with coaching changes and more concerned about a move to a new stadium than organizational integrity. Then ended up in the hell hole that is Washington.
Either one of those guys gets drafted to say Pittsburgh or New England their career arc is a completely different story. Those teams have solid organizational structure and teach young players how to become real pros. Structures more like what Bama provided for them.
End of the day; they both ended up in bad organizations and didn’t have the personal mental tools to deal with a situations like that.

Yeah, Ro was like having a coach on the field...he knew the defense stone cold and would make changes/calls without looking to the sideline...

Rolando was the best defensive player of the Saban era. Crazy as a shite house rat and smart as a whip.

Was at that game. Had great seats but they were surrounded by Texas fans. To their credit they treated me and my wife with respect and courtesy. Much better than we ever got treated in Knoxville at any Bama/ Tennessee games. Actually had to fight off two drunks in Knoxville because I was wearing my Bama gear.

And when Ro didn't let them pour Gatorade on Saban after the SEC championship - loved that moment.

Ya, if anyone could have beaten the complacency out of the locker-room, it would have been him.
We did also have a ton of lingering injury issues that year though so still would have been tough.
