Heading to Tuscaloosa today to check out Moundville. I think this is the first time I’ve made the drive from Auburn that wasn’t for a football game, haha.
Two questions:
1) Do I eat at Archibald’s?
2) Anyone have anything specific that I should be on the lookout for in Moundville?
TIA

the answer to #1 is absolutely yes. Best advice is buy a gallon of that sauce to take home with you ($25).
The mounds are cool. Enjoy.

As soon as I saw the thread title, I was preparing to type Archibald's.
There are a lot of good, more modern places to eat, but if you've never had it and just want some great ribs from a literal hole-in-the-wall joint, it's fantastic.
If you have kids in tow and want to get out of the rain, Buffalo Phil's tends to be a favorite with the younger crowd, and has a lot more indoor seating.

the sauce is a great marinade (burgers/chicken) besides being generally fantastic imo. It's a cool experience nonetheless, been going for 45 years.

Just make sure you go to the original Archibald's. There's a newer one closer to Moundville near the intersection of Skyland Blvd and Hwy 69 on Greensboro Ave. Not even sure of that newer one is still open though.
I haven't been to Moundville since elementary school. There used to be a little coffee shop there that had good pies and pastries. Pie Lab was the name of it. Not sure if it's still around. Do they still have the Indian skeleton on display at Moundville? That was always the height of the trip when we'd go there in elementary school in the 80's. I heard they removed it.

If Buffalo Phils didn't take dining dollars they would be out of business. Don't think I knew anyone in college who genuinely liked that place.

The fact that they deliver (at least when I was in school) really late also helped. Although with Postmates, Doordash, etc. these days I doubt it matters anymore. But yeah, the food is pretty awful unless you got some fries that hadn't been sitting under a heat lamp for 30 minutes.

I was in school when it first opened at its current location, and it was very popular then. I ate there before a game 10 or so years ago and it was barely edible. Used to be the best wings in town in the late 80’s and early to mid 90’s. Way better than Baumhower’s back then.

I love Moundville... Love the scenery..
Question for everyone about the mounds.. Anyone know how a group of Native Americans with no bulldozers or no modernized technology were able to build those damn things??

Wings are tiny. Wouldn't be somewhere I'd recommend. Archibalds has amazing ribs. Like another person said, make sure you hit up the shack in Northport.

During my time it had the best outdoor seating on the strip. Cool fall Thursday and Friday afternoons there was no better place to sit outside and drink...but yeah, screw the food.

what was the little wing place on the strip in the late 80's/early 90's that had good wings/fries? They were messy but good, little place, mostly takeout.

There was a Buffalo Phil's that was down by the Alabama Book Store and The End Zone/Solomon's. That was his original location. Sounds like the place you're talking about. Only had a few tables in it.
There was also a Wings N Things. I think that one was Baumhower's original restaurant but may be wrong. It was at the other end of the strip next to the gas station.
There was a third wing place that was next to where Phil's is now. Forget the name of it. Zax or something like that, maybe? It was only there for a year or two.

yea that's it, I couldn't remember if it was the same name or not. $8 got you a huge plate of greasy fries/wings. They were good though.

yep, that's correct. Had a friend that worked there for a bit. Chicken fingers.

I only remember it because it was at the spot where that half circle brick stairs are out front. I was walking out of there with a girl I was interested in from a class and ate arse coming down those stairs. Had to go to Russell and get stitches in my knee.

Do they still have the Indian skeleton on display at Moundville?
Probably for the best
