Ever since UA became a majority out of state school, it has caught heat from a lot of Alabamians and even outsiders who have claimed that it is favoring out of state students. It is true that in terms of in state enrollment, UA has been losing to Auburn over the last several years. Auburn now enrolls more in state students.

UA has obviously gotten the message and is doing something about it. As of this Fall, any in state student who applies and enrolls with at least a 3.5 GPA and an ACT of 21-24, will definitely receive a scholarship of $2000 per year. Scholarship amounts are even higher of course for those with higher ACT scores, much higher per each higher score. I think the minimum requirement for the ACT should actually be higher, but UA seems serious about increasing in state enrollment. Please share this info with parents and high school students you may know. Let's make UA once again, the main destination for in state students.

Update: UA System has frozen tuition for all in state students. UA in state tuition was frozen starting last Fall, but now, it is frozen at all three schools.

Yep. Part of UA's new push is focusing on retention and getting students as equipped as possible instead of focusing on 4 year graduation rates. This goes hand in hand with in state students who were leaving UA (via transfer/dropout or failing out) at similar rates to out of states students which shouldnt be happening. These scholarships are huge.

It is just for new students. But the scholarship lasts through their time at UA as long as they maintain a minimum GPA.

I hope those still exist in 6-7 years. That's when my oldest daughter will be ready for school.

They may get tightened up as the populations come back in balance, but UA has committed to having lower standards for scholarships for instate students than out of state students. So even if the bottom two aren't there anymore, there will be scholarships with attainable ACT/SAT #'s attached to them.

Biggest thing honestly is the GPA. Your kid can be smart and a good student and because UA recalculates the GPA instead of just taking your boosted GPA it can be a cutoff for some students. Your kid is better off taking AP/honors in classes she likes and avoiding taking AP in subjects she isn't good in.

I've always felt boosted GPA scores are a scam anyway. Do schools actually accept those scores?

UA making the Presidential Elite scholarship a thing again. I had that offered from Bama and I was tempted

Glad that kids can get a great education with less of a debt burden. Just stupid the $ it takes to go to school now

Some do. Most recalculate, but it can really vary.
