I went down another rabbit hole this afternoon and found one of the absolute worst high school football programs in the state. These cats haven't won a game since October 18, 2013, when they defeated Catholic Montgomery by a score of 51-8. They have lost 60 straight games since then. And the vast majority of the games they have played in haven't been close. For instance, in 2018, they were outscored by a combined 27-417. They went their final six games without scoring a single point. The average score for them that year was 3.0-46.3. Truly awful. And last year the average score in their winless 2019 campaign was 12.0-66.4.

My dad went to school there for a few years. Did his senior year at Dixie Academy. Pretty sad area of the state honestly. Dixie won a few state championships back in the day, but that area is known more for baseball (GW Long)

He was part of their inaugural graduating class if my memory serves, his little brother spent 4 years there I believe. They grew up in Clio. Just not much going on at all in that part of the world, but it'll always be special to me. Dad's whole side of the family live(d) in those parts

I looked at Clio Presbyterian Church as a call just out of seminary. Did not end up taking it

Simply put, the school system is only concerned about 1 sport: basketball. The school has had a lot of success in the past 10-15 years in basketball; several final fours and some titles, including runner up in class 3A last year. I know how odd it sounds that a school in south Alabama is not concerned with football, but that’s just how it is.

Yeah I worked there as a teacher in 2014. They are a basketball school. All football does is keep their fans preoccupied until its time for the hardwood. Their biggest rival is Eufaula. I worked the door that game. I ran out of tickets and Change for that game. I had to turn people away from the door. They had to add extra seating for that game. A lot of school in the rural area are basketball.

1. There's just not a lot of support and participation for football in central/sw/w Alabama. People families are moving out of rural areas into more urban areas. Private/segregation academy is also a reason for lack of support.. No hometown unity or support for kids and therefore lack of motivation
Just look at these schools. Selma High, Southside-Selma, Marengo, R.C. Hatch, Keith, Marion, J.F. Shields, Sumter Central, Wilcox Central, Barbour County, Eufaula, Georgiana, Hale County, Monroe County, Calhoun School
Between these schools they have a combined 49 state titles in basketball. 3.2 average per school. So there are athletes there for sure.
And how many football? An astounding 4. With the last being in 1981.
In contrast look at these schools...
Linden, Sweet Water, Thomasville, Greenville, Demopolis, Chilton County, Bibb County, Jackson, Maplesville,Brantley,T.R. Miller
There are 40 football championships between 11 schools. 3.6 average. These schools are in the same exact area as the basketball schools. The difference? These schools/communities are filled with pride & unity, and they are also integrated. Community backs these schools and students want to participate. On the other hand, for the basketball schools why play or even try when there are less than 50 people in your home stands? No support? No commitment for program development. Therefore, they choose to stick with 1 sport that is most recognized and easier place to win, basketball.
