To help us continue to be thankful for our football program and our current status, we shall embark on a trip down memory lane periodically between now and September 2017 to remind us of the dark times.

Re: Simpson's Punishment?
i think a big part of it is that those two, along with many (most?) other sports writers, predicted that shula was the wrong hire and that he'd be a total disaster and out the door by now.

the fact that he's proven them wrong makes them look stupid and they'll take any opportunity to make things more difficult for him.

oh, and the fact that scarbinsky's a total auburn homer.

I still find myself thinking about the duplicity with all of these writers (re: Shula as the wrong hire.) Did you see one person report on Croom saying last year at Media Days that he blew the interview himself?

Re: Simpson's Punishment?

Finebaum has just been giving Tuberville praise and giving Shula grief this offseason because it is not only convenient, but it stirs more controversy. If it were the other way around, he would get no attention. He'll always use Alabama fans as his main ticket to bring home a pay check, and there is no better way to get attention from Bama fans than to give Auburn praise and let Alabama have it every chance he gets. It is all so obvious, and that is why I quit listening to that show a long time ago.

Question If Shula has losing season, will Bamanation stay on Shula's wagon?
Lets say the offensive line does not come together and Brodie gets abused like last year. The defensive line does not get the job done, and we have a losing season. Will the Bama faithful support Shula or be ready to run him out of town? All the above is possible.
Before you answer the question, we all know Bama is down 20+ scholarship players. We lost Smiley,Childress,A. Odom and B. Daniels before they were seniors. Its tough enough to play in the sec with a full alottment of players and a coaching staff that's been together for a while.
Saying all this, i know Coach Shula has away of recruiting that will get us back, if we give him some time. Will he be a great coach on the field? Only time will tell. I remember a few years back when an assistant coach came into the sec without any head coaching experience. His first year he made some bonehead moves, after that he brought the team together. His name is Mark Richt. Granted, he recieved it with a full alottment of players. It will take Shula a few more years because of the 20+ scholars he is down. Lets all support the coaching staff all year and see how the cards fall. Will you be supporting this team without complaining and second guessing, after the Auburn game if its a losing season? From a concerned Bama fan!
Go ahead, fire away!

Personally I see a wining season. But if not, then I would think it depends on how the team plays and the record. 0-11 or 5-6, for instance.

Honestly, No. If we have a losing season the "majority" will jump ship. The possibility of a losing season is high, injuries could spell trouble early if we are hit with them like last year. However, if we have a losing season and people do cease supporting Shula he will not be fired and will be given ONE more year. If after three years he has not had a winning season he will resign or he will be fired. If you think this is a harsh opinion its not, its the truth. BUT, I think we will have a winning season (9 games are certain 10 is highly possible but the Barn seems to have the "mocus" on us the last two years, if we beat the barn and go 10-1 I believe we will be mismatched in our Bowl game losing to the likes of some conference champion and finish the season 10-2. Im behind Shula and will support him through the storm but in my opinion the world will stop spinning for most BAMA fans if we have a losing season, which I said above earlier wont happen so dont worry.

The knee-jerk Bama fans will want his head on a platter.

The rational Bama fan will sit down and weigh the options of having the fifth coach in five years and what that will do for future stability, recruiting, and laying a foundation.

I hope some of these pre-season mags haven't raised the expectations too high. Seriously, if Bama suffers some injuries, the depth will catch up to us, and there will be some losses. If that happens, Coach Shula can't be the fault of that. It will be something he inherited.

I don't see any worse than 5-6. 9-2 or even 10-1 are probable if there arent any siginificant injuries.

So let me get this straight, Shula deserves four or five years just to prove that he's a good coach? Are you kidding me? Hell, by those standards, Mike Dubose and Ears Whitworth would have been around to coach another year or two. However, if that's the case, then I think it's time we re-analyze that whole notion of Alabama fans having too high of expectations. If we're now giving coaches 5 years just to prove themselves, then that's just a rolling joke that we haven't caught on to yet.

I certainly hope Shula will turn out to be a good coach, but just because we desperately need a good coach at this juncture does not make Shula a good coach. He may indeed turn out to be a good coach, but the fact is that he has shown us absolutely nothing that would lead an unbiased observor to believe that he's a good coach.

Last year, on our great days we beat teams with losing records, on our average days we lost, and on our bad days, we were blown out in embarrassing fashion. In many games last year, we were never in seriously in contention. In the first half of the Georgia, Ole Miss, LSU, and Auburn games, we were outscored by a total of 81 points (103-22, to be exact). Furthermore, in the games we should have won (NIU, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Hawaii), we blew away countless opportunities to win. In many of those cases, those "opportunities" involved such things as scoring a single point on ten goal-to-go plays, or getting one first down in the fourth quarter. Even if we can just things like that, we are probably sitting at 8-5 for last year.

Once again, hopefully Shula is the guy, but I don't see how anyone could, from an unbiased perspective, say that Shula has done anything to prove that he is the guy. Simply put, under Shula's tenure, we have one terrible season and one good recruiting class. Call that the seeds of greatness if you want, but if that's great, I'd hate to hear your idea of the seeds of failure.

Now that the level-headed and not-so-level-headed have spoken, I will interject with a level of pure knowledge of the situation and take my opinion out. I know that's hard for some to believe, but I will simply reiterate what Coach Moore and others have said since day one.

Coach Shula will be our coach come hell or high water for at least 5 years! There is no way that we can "Build" anything if we keep changing our head coach.

Now, I will add some opinion to this equation. I totally agree with whomever said it first...there will be massive changes under Shula, but he will remain regardless of what happens.

Also, don't forget...next year is supposed to be worse than this year from a pure numbers standpoint. That is why Shula has publically said since the A-Day luncheon that we should see up to 10 true freshman play a lot this year! We'll need some experience next year because the team will be so young.

And finally, there is literally NO WAY we have a losing season this year. I realistically see us at the very worst case scenario with 7 wins. Utah State, Western Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Southern Miss, Mississippi State and then we'll upset somebody else, although neither Ole Miss or Arkansas will be seen as truly upsets because they will be struggling to find an identity since both lost their major talent.

If you actually take a look at the 2005 schedule, there doesn't even have to be significant improvement to have a 7-4 season. If we can assume that we will have our starting QB for most of the season (I know its a stretch), like alot of schools are able to assume, then I would be putting my money down for a pretty good year. Add a MCB win, and voila, we're 8-4 and CMS is telling some doom and gloom fans to stick it. Our defense should show some improvement with veteran players reporting back. As many have said, the O-line is the key. But remember, not many are expecting 2005 to be the so-called breakout year.
By the way, why would we not give Bama a chance against Florida, Tennessee, and LSU AT HOME? And I hope the players feel the same as I do that its time to kick some serious Barn Tigger butt.

That said, 2005 should only be another step upward to our eventual goal, the goal to which we're more accustomed. 2006 should be very exciting, and if our coaching staff is intact (meaning we've been relatively successful) we've most probably set ourselves up for another strong run for the top in 2007.

We would have been the sleeper THIS year had Brodie and the backfield not have gone down hurt.

It's scary to think how close Bama was this season...

I think our first reasonable chance at a BCS berth will be in 2007, but 2008 is more likely.

A bunch of defensive starters and Brodie Croyle will be seniors in 2005, so 2006 will involve some rebuilding and the depth still will not be quite as good as our SEC brethren. In all reality, we could win 7 games in 2005 and 2006. Will the Bama Nation continue to be patient?

In 2007, we will have 4 classes recruited by Shula on campus, and 3 of them will be of the full 25-scholarship variety. Plus the QB will likely be in his second year as a starter (JPW, Jimmy Barnes, or Jimmy Johns).

In 2008, the effects of scholarship limitations are officially over, the entire roster will have been recruited by Shula, and the QB will likely be a 4th year junior in his thrid year as the starter (JPW, Jimmy Barnes, or Jimmy Johns).

-Sully

To be fair, Sully was right. The 2008 team, led by a third year starter at QB from his list, did go to a BCS Bowl.

When people are predicting big things for the 2004 team, they might have been right if not for injuries.

I was hoping you'd link the thread where Tide-HSV all but guaranteed Saban to Texas.

I simply trolled there, finally getting banned in 2005 I think. God, that place was awful, as are most Bama fan discussion boards.

I was never banned, but was threatened with it for moderately criticizing Cade Foster after the 2013 Iron Bowl. Then left of my own accord and joined the rant shortly before the Oklahoma loss that season.

Back then all I did was troll the free rivals boards. Volquest, AuburnSports, BamaOnline (probably starting in like 2004 when I started college).

It was so easy to create a new user name I had a plethora of them : BenLeard4Heisman, IHazACrayon?, Philapotamous

Man, things were a lot tougher back then with us being a total dumpster fire.

Those were the days. You could just set up an account in minutes and go. My dad used to get a real kick out of trolling VolNation, posing as a super negative Vol fan. Also liked to troll TideFans by saying things like they needed a crimson field or an elephant on the helmet. That really riled the old timers up, needless to say.

Yep - and a lot of old people had just stumbled onto those message boards as they started looking at recruiting, but they had NO IDEA how the internet worked.

You could mess with them so easily and they'd lose their shite.
