Alabama and Ohio State Schedule Home-and-Home Football Series

The Crimson Tide and Buckeyes are scheduled to meet in Columbus during the 2027 season with Ohio State returning the trip in 2028
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama and Ohio State announced a home-and-home football series between the two programs for the 2027 and 2028 seasons on Thursday.

"This series with Ohio State adds another outstanding non-conference opponent to our future football schedules," said Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne. "We are thrilled at the progress we've made in securing such quality home-and-homes that will provide tremendous opportunities for our team and an exciting game day atmosphere for our fans in the coming years."

The first game will take place in Columbus on Sept. 18, 2027, with the Buckeyes coming to Tuscaloosa on Sept. 9, 2028. It is the first home-and-home meeting between OSU and Alabama.

"The addition of Ohio State to our future non-conference schedule shows the commitment our program and administration has to creating the best possible games for our players and fans," Alabama head football coach Nick Saban said. "I have coached a lot of years in the SEC and Big 10 and Bryant-Denny Stadium and Ohio Stadium are two of the very best environments in college football. Non-conference series like Alabama-Ohio State are so important to the health of college football, and we are very pleased that we could get this series completed."

Alabama and Ohio State have met on four previous occasions, all in neutral sites games. The first meeting came in the 1978 Sugar Bowl, which the Tide won 35-6. The two teams then opened the 1986 season at the Kickoff Classic at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., with a 16-10 Alabama win. The Crimson Tide won the 1995 Citrus Bowl (24-17), while OSU was victorious in the 2015 Sugar Bowl (42-35).

With the addition of Ohio State, Alabama has added 10 home-and-home series to future schedules recently, including: Texas (2022 & 2023), Wisconsin (2024 & 2025), Florida State (2025 & 2026), West Virginia (2026 & 2027), Notre Dame (2028 & 2029), Georgia Tech (2030 & 2031), Oklahoma (2032 & 2033), Arizona (2032 & 2033) and Virginia Tech (2034 & 2035). The Crimson Tide also has a 2-for-1 home-and-home series with South Florida (2023, 2024 & 2026).

Along with playing Ohio State in 2027 and 2028, Alabama will also host West Virginia during the 2027 season and travel to South Bend, Ind., to play Notre Dame in 2028. Alabama opens the 2020 season with a neutral site game against Southern California on Sept. 5 and then travels to Atlanta in 2021 to face Miami (Fla.).

That 2028 schedule

Has to be by far the two biggest name non conference opponents we have ever scheduled in the same season

@ Notre Dame

Our 1980's schedule were pretty amazing - partly because Penn St was on them every season as almost an extra conference game

1981 - Georgia Tech, Rutgers, @ Penn State
1982 - @ Georgia Tech, Penn State
1983 - @ Penn State, @ Boston College
1984 - Boston College, @ Georgia Tech, Penn State
1985 - Texas A&M, @ Penn State
1986 - Ohio State (N), Notre Dame, Penn State
1987 - @ Penn State, @ Notre Dame
1988 - Penn State, @ Texas A&M

1986 good lawd - Ohio State, Notre Dame, Penn State

Some Buckeye fan on RJ Young youtube website said he wished the game was in November. Always an excuse.

I’m super elated about great in season games, however you’re going to have to convince me that scheduling these games improves our playoff chances

Say, in 2028 we split the ND-tOSU games, going 3-1 OOC, lose a game in the SEC to go 10-2. Even winning the SECCG to go 11-2, there is no precedent to allow Bama in
Would be In much better shape at 12-1, winning 4 flunky OOC games

I mean technically you're right, but Auburn was #2 in the CFP Rankings going into the SECCG. They win that game, they would have been in as a 2 loss team. Hell, we supposedly barely made it in over 2 loss OSU. It's going to happen eventually. Plus the 2026 season is when the new contract for the CFP will start. I think we're more likely to go to 6-8 teams at this point rather than stay at 4.

Another angle where it could help us is looking at 2016 Ohio State. They didn’t win their conference but still got into the playoff partially because they had a major OOC win over Oklahoma. We could be in a similar position where we lose to LSU or Auburn and don’t make the SECCG but have an 11-1 record with wins over OSU and ND.

I'll just be completely honest - I'm excited because the games and the trips will be fun. Who even knows if we'll still be in a position to seriously think about winning national titles every year with the next coach (or the coach after him) in 2027. Who knows what the system to crown a champion will look like.

All I know is, games at home vs Ohio State, Texas, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, etc and road trips to those places is what makes college football fun for me as I get older. And I'm really excited about it.

Just throw in games now with Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon, and USC and we are set.

Love these road trips to sites with great tradition.

I like the upgrade in competition but I can’t help but wonder if Byrne isn’t anticipating a change in playoff parameters that is skewed more toward strength of schedule Or minimum number of P5 games or something.

Honestly I don't care. I'm just glad that there are going to be some electric home games in the near future. In 7-8 years we may not even be that elite but regardless it beats the ever loving sh%& out of playing alcorn state or some other school like that

A lot of SEC teams are now loading up on the OOC schedule. Which says we are definitely headed to an enlarged playoff. A 2 loss SEC team getting an invite will be very doable if they are the right 2 teams. Given the caliber of coaching and talent in our conference, it may well be perfect timing.

Just quickly scanned an OSU board. They are weirdly obsessed with how often SEC teams play up North. Also very butthurt that bowl games are primarily down south

I noticed that too - also they all have this chip on their shoulder about SEC teams not playing up North "in November"? As if Ohio State ever plays out of conference games in November?
