He called him out before the game started. Said they had a plan to prevent Venables for stealing their signs, and said the only reason he is a good coach is because they steal the signs. And then he torched Clemson's defense.

Fields said they huddled more to prevent sign stealing by Clemson. They also ran quickly a couple of times while Clemson was trying to change their defense.

If he is the best in the game at deciphering signs, more power to Venables. Sign "stealing" is such a weak excuse. It is the other teams' job to create a code that their opponent cannot crack

Good! Clemson's defense was ordinary against teams with a pulse this season. Others might be catching on.

Venables has been notorious for years about waiting until the absolute last possible moment to get his own signals in so it would not surprise me if they focus their film study on what they're seeing on the sidelines rather than on the field. I mean hell, the DB who jumped the route for the pick 6 in the 2018 NC was moving on that ball before Tua even got the snap. You don't do that unless you are 1000% confident in what is coming because if you're wrong it's a TD. But if it can all be attributed to watching enough film to observe patterns in the signals being used by the offense you'd think the entire ACC would have been tipped off to it for a while and would just change their signs up before playing Clemson. If all of Clemson's success on defense can be attributed to knowing what is coming, surely they'd have lost multiple conference games the last few years. Or at least won several track meets where their defense can't stop anything because they're a one trick pony and the trick isn't working.

Clemson had our signs the entire game in Santa Clara.

It was readily apparent they had a better sense of what we planned to do than we did at times.

If so, that is our fault not theirs.

That's not exactly true.

If they are hiring a spy to specifically record coaches making signals then using that to decipher next to the plays... that is illegal.

I don't think anyone has implied anything like that, just that they have a group of analysts whose entire job is breaking down signals and patterns of those signals and that sort of stuff.

This.

The only time I see an issue is if they're actually 'stealing' as in industrial espionage or having a mole on the payroll.

If they've got analysts that are skilled at watching film of coaches and figuring out what the signals mean, that's called being really good at your job.

Agreed.

If this is what's happening, then they're noticing tendencies and acting on them. That's just good research in my book.

It’s a shame we didn’t do that when we played them
