I really didn't want Long, but I agree with you. If we can get that package deal, I'm fine with it

Aazaar Abdul-Rahim (Maryland bio)
quote:

AAZAAR ABDUL-RAHIM
Assistant Coach - Cornerbacks

Aazaar Abdul-Rahim enters his third season on the Maryland coaching staff in 2018. After two seasons coaching the Terrapin defensive backs, Abdul-Rahim will focus primarily on the cornerback position in 2018.

A former high school head coach with strong ties to the DMV area, Abdul-Rahim has made significant impacts for the Terps on the recruiting trails since his arrival in 2016. He's been key in helping Head Coach DJ Durkin and Maryland sign a consensus Top 20 recruiting class in 2017 and a consensus Top 30 recruiting class in 2018. Over the past two years, Maryland has signed 17 4-star student-athletes and eight members of the ESPN300. Abdul-Rahim was recognized by 247Sports in 2018 as one of the Top 10 recruiting assistant coaches in the Big Ten.

In 2017, Abdul-Rahim was vital in helping the Terps land nine of the Top 20 players from the state of Maryland and three of the top nine players from Washington, D.C. He was recognized by both Rivals.com and 247Sports as one of the Top 25 recruiters nationally for the class of 2017.

Abdul-Rahim has also made an impact coaching Maryland's defensive backs. In 2017, the Terps posted 10 interceptions - the most for a Maryland team since 2003. Under Abdul-Rahim's tutelage, defensive backs JC Jackson, Darnell Savage and Antoine Brooks were all named 2017 Honorable Mention All-Big Ten.

Abdul-Rahim joined the Maryland staff in 2016 after a two-year stint at Alabama where he first served as a defensive analyst before being promoted to the assistant director of player personnel.

A Washington, D.C. native, Abdul-Rahim made his name as the head coach of Friendship Collegiate Academy. After founding the school’s football program in 2004, he turned it into a national power, accumulating 62 wins and leading the team to a District of Columbia State Athletic Association championship in 2012. He helped over 100 players earn scholarships to play college football.

Abdul-Rahim also founded “Cover One”, a defensive back training academy that has worked with dozens of NFL players.

Abdul-Rahim played two seasons at San Diego State (1997-1998) after a stint at Mesa Community College. After college, the Dunbar High School standout, played for the San Diego Riptide of the Arena Football League.

Long just looks like another ho-hum hire, but that's kind of our OC hiring plateau, so I might as well get on board with it. He's-not-going-to-wreck-it-but-he's-also-definitely-not-going-to-optimize-it-and-he's-going-to-frustrate-the-frick-out-of-us version 10 or whatever, coming up.

I'll take Silver and Lance but do not want Long. And for heavens sake, people needs to stop bringing up all these rinse and repeat candidates-Shula, Chip Kelly, Rich Rod, Chiz, Fedora, etc.

Maybe Chip Long could achieve results that are more eye-popping with Bama's offensive talent, as compared to ND's.

Long's offensive acumen and philosophy are actually an excellent fit for what Saban wants.

No doubt. What I'm saying though is that hiring him wouldn't be doing the most we possibly can (or anything like it) with our talent.

What are you basing that conclusion on?

I like Long, much, much better than Daboll and Nuss. The reason I am hesitant, is because I really want to give the Princeton guy a shot. So my opinion is biased

I think Daboll would have looked much better this year with Tua than he did last year.

Daboll couldn't adapt an offense to what he had and that is a problem. I have no interest in rehashing the QB debate, but I have 0 tolerance for an OC that can't adapt an offense to what he has available to him. He absolutely would've been fine with tua, but he can't and didn't want to recruit so see ya, don't let the door hit your arse on the way out.

I say hire him as the Qb's coach with a long-term view of him replacing Long when he gets the right hc offer. Realistically he could gameplan and do all the co OC stuff with Long.

Chip Long is a very good play caller and QB coach. He saved Brian Kelleys job in 2017. My top two last year was Enos and Long. Would be a great hire.

The Eagles run a ton of RPOs.
He's spent time coaching under Andy Reid, Chip Kelly, and Doug Pederson. I can't think of three better offensive minds to learn from. Also considering his back ground as a RB coach our ground attack would likely be emphasized.

He's going to get an NFL OC job sooner rather then later but we could nab him first.

I'm not high on the Princeton guy. We need someone used to scheming for and against top quality athletes. I'll cry if we end up with Mike Shula. He was pathetic as the Panthers coordinator. That fanbase hated him.

I just think we need to look outside of the nepotism box. Let's hire someone hungry to build a name over multiple seasons.

This was in relation to Duce Staley. I need to figure out how to quote the poster I was replying too sorry. I'm new on the site

You are describing the Princeton OC... Someone hungry to build their name over multiple seasons and as a plus he actually has called plays and recruits unlike Staley. Also I don't think we should emphasize the ground attack. Fundamentally every down you run is less efficient than a pass. We had incredible balance this year in terms of runs to passes, we don't need to shift into a 55-45 run-pass ratio.

From what I've heard/read thus far, unless Saban has a rabbit in his hat, Long would be my first choice...

And if they could bring Dan Werner back, think he'd do well as QB coach. Think Lance Taylor as WR coach would be a good fit as well; Alabama ties and NFL experience can only help. Other than Pittman, whom I don't think will leave UGA unless he follows Chaney, and Will Friend, dunno much about the OL candidates...though anyone that learned from Pendry can't be bad...

Well, if Saban wanted a challenge, he's got one now. Most of his coaches are gone and now a large number of starters are gone too.

Building and sustaining a highly successful football program is inherently a very tough challenge. And Saban thrives on it.
