John Brannen has Northern Kentucky in the Horizon league championship game today against Wright St. I think the guy is a pretty good coach. We could do worse.

Go ahead and scratch Buzz Williams off our list. Texas A&M just fired Kennedy and are going after Buzz according to reports. They will get him too

Luke Yaklich is the reason why Michigan’s defense is so elite. Tremendous defensive mind. Only thing is his ties are in Illinois and Michigan.

Also don’t think he’s waiting on Beilein to retire. He’d have to wait awhile for that.

Here is a mega list of names that I thought of first glance. Some coaches I mention (like Anderson and White) might be looking for a reset option.

At Power conference
Steve Prohm (Iowa St)
Buzz Williams (Va Tech)
Mike Anderson (Arkansas)
Mike White (Florida)
Kelvin Sampson (Houston)
Mick Cronin (Cincinnati)
Johnny Dawkins (UCF)

Mid major
Steve Forbes (ETSU)
Mike Young (Wofford)
Nate Oats (Buffalo)
Matt McMahon (Murray State)
Eric Musselman (Nevada)
John Brannen (Northern Kentucky)

Former head coaches
Thad Matta (Ohio St)
Andy Kennedy (Ole Miss)

Obviously there are others but these were some names I thought would be intriguing for different reasons. Some of these guys would probably not take the job and others would be fall back options. But still it’s fun to speculate

His ties to midwest are a pro to me. Maybe he can snag a couple of gym rats from midwest each year, throw a redshirt on them, etc. You can eat good off of 3 stars from Indiana.

Here’s the thing for me: there’s not a lot of names on that list that will wow people or fire up the casual fans. But i don’t give a damn and neither should Byrne. What I do know is I would take every coach on that list over Avery in a New York second. I think there are some hidden gems on that list, some proven guys and some you just don’t know and I’ll be the first one to tell you that I don’t think I could separate all the sheep from the goats. But I believe the worst guy on that list, whoever it may be, is certainly no worse and is probably better than who we have now.

So do it, Byrne! Roll them dice and hire us a new coach.

At Power conference
Steve Prohm (Iowa St)----I still say Mark Gotfired Redux
Buzz Williams (Va Tech)---on his way to Tex A2M
Mike Anderson (Arkansas)---40 minutes of h3ll is outdated
Mike White (Florida)---LOL, the one HC UF can keep.
Kelvin Sampson (Houston)----Me likey
Mick Cronin (Cincinnati)---Cincy is his alma mater.
Johnny Dawkins (UCF)----Hell no.

Mid major
Steve Forbes (ETSU)----Me likey, strong ties to midwest.
Mike Young (Wofford)---no clue
Nate Oats (Buffalo)----Me likey
Matt McMahon (Murray State)---Pass on anything from MS
Eric Musselman (Nevada)----maybe
John Brannen (Northern Kentucky)----The ultimate fallback option

Former head coaches
Thad Matta (Ohio St)---Yes if health permits
Andy Kennedy (Ole Miss)----Hell no

Here are some thoughts (from Miami board but plenty of fans from midwest):

quote:

John Brannen of Northern Kentucky is a guy who's probably not power conference radar yet but could get a good A10 caliber job. Took over a team transitioning from D2 and got them to the NCAA in his 2nd year, won the conference his 3rd year and is playing for his

John brannen is a phenomenal coach. a lot of pressure defensively, iirc.

quote:

That was the guy Dayton should have hired. Took over a D2 team at the end of it's transitional phase and now they're the heavy weight program in the Horizon League.

Working off memory, I think he's probably had the best record of any former D2 that's moved up in their first ten years outside Belmont. He got a bad Atlantic Sun program that under your average coverage would have rotted jumping up a level to the Horizon but he took the conference over

Good Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana recruiter

I'd be fine with Brannon.

I’m fine with him as a fallback option and like him better than a lot of the suggestions I’ve seen (such as Prohm). He was the best coach on staff during CAG’s reign.

I'd definitely like to go after Matta first if he's healthy. I think I read that he has back issues

I wonder who Wimp Sanderson would like.
Even though he and his son have the morning radio show, I'm not sure how in tune he is to particular potential coaches.
I would value his thoughts on the type of coach to look for.

Did Sanderson like the last 3 hires by Bama?

If Matta doesn't want to coach then fine. Have him on the search committee with Bo Ryan.

I think he’s a very good coach and an extremely good guy. He gave me and my brother a tour of the practice facility and player locker rooms when they were brand new just because I asked

He probably liked Gottfried, since he played for him.
I'm not sure Wimp likes anyone at this point in his life.

Any coach we get that can finally recruit shooters & not just athletes, fundamentally sound players, who puts team 1st, a coach that will hold players accountable for lack of effort is what we're looking for but as Phil said any candidates is better than what we have.
