Are you for real? Wow then I could definitely see Lloyd coming here. I don’t think Few is going anywhere but he could give his assistant his blessing to take over in Tuscaloosa.

Lloyd has never seriously entertained coaching searches for years. He has been on the ground floor of Gonzaga's rise to prominence and already named heir apparent.

Coaching at Gonzaga is an elite job opportunity. Hard to imagine anyone passing that up, especially considering they get to guide it until they take over

Problem is Few isn't going anywhere. If Lloyd think he's capable of competing as a HC, he should try to get a gig at a capable program and prove his worth before thinking of coaching at his alma mater. I'm sure GU fans would be interested to see how he does before making HC.

These coach in waitings never work out.

Gene, how would you feel turning over the reigns of a powerhouse to a guy who has never been a head coach? Bama could be his trial run. Coach in Tuscaloosa for a few years until Few is ready to hang it up, prove your mettle by bringing Alabama back to prominence then go back.

If he goes back. Few doesn't make much more than Avery.

What would he gain by doing this? He can wait to prove himself in a few years and is well paid at Zaga

He leaves Gonzaga, he no longer is surefire publicly named future coach. If he fails, he for sure isn't. That's before you consider public comments that he wants his young kids, who've never had to move, to grow up and finish HS in Spokane WA

He'd also be a questionable fit at a place like Bama. A lifelong Pacific NW resident, recruits almost exclusively Euros not AAU and only experience is midmajor BBall small donor environment

He may be a great coach, but I'd be shocked if he'd be a great fit at Bama.

If he didn't perform early, recruiting unheard of developing Euros and cultural mismatchs w Boosters would be hard to handle

Europe is closer to Alabama than Spokane. Florida State and TCU recruits Europe as well. Saban was lifelong northerner before coming down to Baton Rouge. Brett Bielema was a midwest guy before taking Arkansas job.

You might be right but tomorrow is promised to no one. Washtington's current HC was a hc in waiting at Syracuse and left when it was apparent that Jim B. wasn't going to retire. Johnny Dawkins was hciw for Coach K. All I'm saying is dude will have to give up some serious long-term $$$$ just wait for Few to retire. From the sound of it Bama has a much better shot at Few.

Btw, anybody interested in Patrick Beilein? He might be worth an interview, imo.

If go off to coach and get run off you can always go back home.

You go home to coach and get run off where you gonna go?

This is about how he recruits almost exclusively unknown development Euros. That isn't going to be popular at a recruiting ranking obsessed fanbase. His AAU connections/experience is almost non existent

He would be a paradigm shift on how the program runs and has no experience dealing with mega boosters

Saban was lifelong northerner before

None of the guys listed have spent 40+ years of their life in the same state and coaching at their first location with kids who have gone through only one system

Plus, culturally a basketball coach from PacNW is much farther from the south than rural Midwest stops

quote:

wasn't going to retire

By all accounts, Few is not expected to be a "die on the bench" personality

Also, Few openly has been talking about Zaga post Few in recent years being in good hands with Lloyd

quote:

I'm saying is dude will have to give up some serious long-term $$$$ just wait for Few to retire

He has already done it multiple times in the past.

Keep in mind his mentor Mark Few makes only some $1-1.5mil estimated

Guys, I love all of you, but let your better judgement take over here.

Alabama is to basketball as Arizona State is to football.

You'd laugh out loud at the equivalent of these names being thrown around for a job like that in football. The European centric top assistant at Gonzaga is not coming to Alabama. Nothing about that makes sense.

Billy Donovan is not leaving a damn good NBA team to come to Alabama.

Fred Hoiberg is not coming to Alabama.

Mussellman is in all likelihood not coming to Alabama.

We're not an elite job. We're not a "sleeping giant" job. We're a pretty decent job with money to spend. We're going to hiring in that bucket. And quite frankly this whole "we'll just pay a bunch so we'll just buy someone" thing should have be crushed after the last coaching search when it meant NOTHING.

We can hire damn good basketball coaches, but they are probably going to be assistants, guys looking to get back into basketball or mid major guys. That's just the way it works at ok but not great programs.

Yep. Never seen those names come from me. It will be an Anthony Grant type of hire but hopefully it hits with the up and comer this time around . Either way CAJ time is up

The sad part is Avery makes more $$$ than folks like Musselman.

You saying Lloyd doesn't make sense but mention Bama will need to look at assistant coaches (like Lloyd). Does Bama have a shot at Luke Yaklich or is he waiting for Beilein to retire at Michigan?

I think certain assistants make since, but Lloyd doesn't seem too with his long standing at Zaga and the Euro thing.

I just don't know enough about Yaklich and the local thoughts on his plans to make an assessment.

Lloyd is more a specific case of both not being available + not a fit for Bama

I know he’d probably never leave to come to a southern school(New York guy), and most fans would consider him and underwhelming hire, but I really love watching Tim Cluess’ Iona teams play basketball.

His record at Iona 124-46(.729). They’re about to win the MAAC Championship and earn an NCAA tournament bid for the 4th straight season, and their 6th since 2010.

Not a household name or wow hire, but a dang good basketball coach.

I'll just be happy with any coach who demands the game of basketball being played the right way. Just like coach Norman Dale demanded from his team in movie Hoosiers. Small Indiana school who won the state title by playing the game the right way. Fundamentals being top priority.

Here’s a little perspective on his coaching ability:

6 NCAA tournaments in 9 seasons at Iona. This season they were 7-15 FIVE WEEKS AGO. They just won the conference championship, now 17-15 and in the tournament.

Compare that to the shite-sandwich Avery has served Bama basketball fans after being squarely in the tournament 5 weeks ago.

I just watched an interview with him on YouTube and he said his favorite basketball movie is Hoosiers . When do we start the petition to hire him?

So ironic. Lol. You don't have to make a big splash to hire a experienced, quality basketball coach.
