Behind-the-scenes Alabama staffer leaving program (al.com)

Leah Knight was Alabama's director of football recruitment.

A member of Alabama's staff who helped with recruiting is leaving the program.

Crimson Tide director of football recruitment Leah Knight is leaving Alabama, AL.com has learned.

That was first reported by Football Scoop, which cited a desire to be closer to her fiance, who is living in Colorado, as the reason for Knight stepping down.

In other recruiting news, AL.com has confirmed that Alabama is hiring UCLA recruiting coordinator Victoria Ross as a recruiting operations coordinator, as first reported by Football Scoop.

Ross attended Alabama and interned with the Tide last season as a recruiting operations assistant. She had been at UCLA since January.

It's possible that a big-name former SEC coach could join Alabama's staff in an off-field role.

Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban has been in contact with former Tennessee coach Butch Jones regarding an offensive analyst position, sources told AL.com. Jones has visited Tuscaloosa and met with Saban in person, per sources.

The 50-year old Jones has been out of work since being fired by the Vols in November.

Jones had been at Tennessee since December 2012 after three seasons as the head coach at Cincinnati and three as the head coach at Central Michigan.

Jones is being paid approximately an $8.2 million buyout by Tennessee, paid in monthly installments until Feb. 2021, according to reports. That number is mitigated by any future salary he earns.

Tennessee hired former Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt as Jones' replacement.

Victoria Ross isn't blonde.

Reports: Alabama has a new recruiting operations coordinator (BamaOnLine)
quote:

Alabama football reportedly has a new operations coordinator, according to multiple reports.

Victoria Ross, who previously held the same position at UCLA, is returning to Tuscaloosa as the Crimson Tide’s new recruiting operations coordinator, according to multiple reports.

Ross is a graduate of Alabama and also previously interned with the Crimson Tide. She returns after nearly two months at her now-former post at UCLA.

Ross replaces director of football recruiting Leah Knight, who according to FootballScoop.com, is returning to Colorado after one season at UA due to a desire to be closer to her fiance.

Alabama hires son of Auburn DC Kevin Steele

Alabama has hired the son of a former Crimson Tide assistant.
Alabama has added Gordon Steele as an offensive analyst, AL.com has learned.

Steele, the son of ex-Tide defensive coordinator and current Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, spent last season as a graduate assistant at South Alabama.

He previously worked at Murray State, where he was the team's offensive line coach and run game coordinator.

Alabama adds Gordon Steele, son of Auburn defensive coordinator, to staff (SEC Country)

quote:

It will be father vs. son during the 2018 Iron Bowl, as Alabama has reportedly added Gordon Steele, son of Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, to its staff, per Michael Casagrande.

Steele will join Nick Saban’s staff as an offensive analyst in an off-the-field role after spending last season as a graduate assistant at South Alabama. He had previously served as offensive line coach and run game coordinator at Murray State.

The Steele family has prior experience working with Saban in Tuscaloosa, as Kevin served as the Crimson Tide’s defensive coordinator in 2007-08 before moving onto Clemson. He would rejoin Saban’s staff in 2013 as director of player personnel and would transition to linebackers coach in 2014. In 2015, he served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at LSU before accepting his current position with the Tigers in 2016.

The addition of Steele could mean that Butch Jones, who was reportedly meeting with Saban about a role as an offensive analyst this week, will not be joining the Alabama staff. Jones, who was dismissed as the head coach at Tennessee in November after five seasons in charge, is still looking for a position in football.

Former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze had also been rumored for a spot on Saban’s staff in an off-the-field position.

The turnover on Alabama’s on-field coaching staff and support staff has been one of the biggest stories in college football this off-season.

Coming off of a national championship win over Georgia, one would figure that Saban would be content to keep the status quo. But that’s not Saban, and because Georgia signed the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class, it helped light a fire under Saban to make necessary changes to get the Tide’s recruiting back on top.

On Friday, FootballScoop reported that Saban is bringing back Daniel Bush in a role on the recruiting staff. Interestingly, it’s Bush’s third job in a matter of months. For the last three years, Bush was the director of player personnel and assistant director of recruiting at Arkansas until Bret Bielema was fired. Then, he moved on to Colorado State in January where he was the program’s director of player personnel. Now, he’s coming back to Alabama where he earned his MBA.

Bush worked for Saban from 2011-14 as a football operations and recruiting specialist. He helped Alabama land the nation’s No. 1 recruiting classes in 2012 and 2013. Bush also had a direct role in recruiting former Alabama stars Derrick Henry, Ryan Anderson, Ar’Darius Stewart and Cyrus Jones.

Alabama recruiting question of the day: Difference between this year’s coaching staff compared to last year’s (SEC Country)

Dan Enos is one of Alabama's new coaches.
quote:

Alabama finished 7th in the recruiting rankings in the 2018 class, but expect the Crimson Tide to be back on top in 2019. SEC Country’s Chris Kirschner will answer the Recruiting Question of the Day each weekday. You can ask him your questions on  Twitter or Facebook. Find our previous questions and answers  here.

Have you seen/heard much difference from recruits with regards to the new coaching staff? — @micahelmore417

Alabama will have almost a completely new coaching staff this coming season. Other than Nick Saban, the only coach who has the same role as last season is offensive line coach Brent Key.

The Tide promoted Mike Locksley to offensive coordinator and Tosh Lupoi to defensive coordinator, moved Joe Pannunzio from tight ends coach and special teams coordinator to running backs coach, hired Dan Enos to coach quarterbacks, Josh Gattis to coach wide receivers, Pete Golding to coach inside linebackers, Karl Scott to coach defensive backs, Craig Kuligowski to coach defensive line and Jeff Banks as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator.

This group should be outstanding on the recruiting trail. Saban hired a bunch of energized coaches who are hungry to be the best they can be in all facets of coaching, including recruiting. There were a few coaches on the previous staff who were not energized when it came to recruiting and it was one of the reasons why Alabama ended up not signing the top class.

We’ve seen that energy on Twitter already. Look at the Twitter pages of Gattis, Banks and Golding. All of those guys actively use Twitter. Recruits take notice of that.

A lot of what I’ve heard from the recruits who have visited Tuscaloosa since the new staff was brought in has focused on the coaches being easy to connect with. A lot of them have mentioned the energy that Banks and Scott bring.

We’ve also had several recruits already name Alabama their leader this early in the process. That wasn’t the case last cycle. A lot of that has to do with these new coaches being younger and easier to talk to.

There’s no doubt in my mind Alabama will have one of the nation’s top recruiting classes this year.
