Damn, you know it’s bad when “I’m a man” Gundy’s Okie Lite defense is better than Bama’s!

When coach Saban says, we aren't worried about stats we want stops, you know expectations have changed dramatically in Tuscaloosa.

I think the game has changed dramatically.

I mean he’s technically right. With the way Mac and the offense are playing, we only need a couple or three stops a game. We don’t have to have the D be lights out. It is kind of sad for us older guys though who remember all the great Bama defenses down through the years.

He's more than technically right but it also felt like more of a concession to how this defense is also performing. Frankly, it just doesn't have to be this bad. And the coach knows it.

Not entirely sure when garbage time ended in Miz/AM but it is worth noting that we've played 3 games where our PPD is average/above average and 1 game where it was probably the worst in program history

Missouri - 0.60
Texas A&M - 1.89
Ole Miss - 4.80
Georgia - 2.00

Overall - 2.56

I haven't pulled out our stats of MiZ/AM/UGA to be sure, I think we've held all 3 of them below their yearly averages in PPD.

We're not great, but Ole Miss excluded we've been average to above average.

Comparatively, LSU is below us and has been torched 2x against bad offenses AND has Vanderbilt included to soften their numbers.

They've only played 1 game (lost to Ga Southern 41-0).

Well, the big picture is a little scary. The B1G and Pac 12 aren't accounted for yet and we are ranked 61st in the nation in total defense, giving up 458 yards a game. There are only 77 teams playing or we would be much lower. Getting better defensively, and fas,t has to be priority one going forward.

Last year's defense finished ranked 13th in the nation, giving up 325 yards a game and we were complaining all offseason. We talked about Shane Lee and all those freshmen on the D and injuries and getting caked walked against the better teams.

Shane Lee looks better every week and that's no joke.

A kid from my hometown is the Umass QB. They went to state last year in Niceville. He is a good athlete but needs a lot of reps at that level.

Well, again, I'm far from an apologist for this defense. They have to be better to win a national title, point-blank.

However - there is a difference between "every game is a disaster" and "the Ole Miss game was the worst in Alabama history and the other 3 were decent".

Georgia Offense
Average PPD (excluding Bama): 2.395
vs Bama: 2.000
Difference: (-0.395)

Texas A&M Offense
Average PPD (excluding Bama): 2.548
vs Bama: 2.000
Difference: (-0.548)

Missouri Offense
Average PPD (excluding Bama): 2.522
vs Bama: 1.900
Difference: (-0.622)

Ole Miss Offense
Average PPD (excluding Bama): 2.330
vs Bama: 4.000
Difference: +1.670

So, we've held 3 teams under their average and had 1 all-time historic disaster. Remove the Ole Miss game and our PPD defense is 1.971, which would be around 25 and be a little above average.

So, I guess my thought is, this group had a terrible no good game in Oxford that terrifies me for when we play other good offenses, but outside of that they've been frustrating but average to above average against decent offenses.

I guess that's a nice way to say we are heading for some serious shootouts. Given that last season's defense wasn't good enough, I'm getting more and more convinced our defense is once again going to eventually leave us wanting.

I think they're better than last year, but I still haven't seen anything that leads me to believe they can hold up against an elite offense.

I do think there is room to get better this year, though, and there really wasn't much last year due to the health and youth at ILB. We'll see - luckily we have 2 weeks vs below average offenses plus a bye to try and get some confidence in what we are doing.

Last year it just felt like we were in over our heads, this year it feels like we have guys who aren't trusting themselves. The good news is #2 can get better.....the bad news is we haven't seemingly gotten better on defense as the year progressed in a long time.

Fortunately for us that's the case for the rest of the SEC as well.

This defense can’t be fixed. We seen NO improvement in 4 weeks. It is not going to get better “all of a sudden.”

Don't think anyone thinks that it will get fixed all of a sudden.

Also, you said we'd lose to Georgia and "it wouldn't be close", so.

There are so many variables that go into this kind of stuff that's it's more or less useless.

In the end, there are only a couple of teams out there that might beat us in a non-flukey game. That's exactly the same as all of our championship years. The scores might look different, but there are different ways of doing things.

I've personally lost faith in our man to man principle as they apply to spread concepts. Part of the frustration about Golding isn't just what fundamentally seems to be missing with our inside LBers, but his creativity. I think I've tried to be somewhat fair about it by saying, I don't think it's always his call. As you mentioned, we don't seem to improve. Frankly, it feels like we are asking our defense half the time to dig a ditch with a spoon. Saturday was actually one of the few times this season that I feel like we put the right tool in their hands and asked them to go out and perform.

This defense has so much naturally. Speed, athleticism galore, and size. Saturday felt like we helped the team to stop thinking and just react. Let them see everything in front of them, and just use their God given ability to react and we're getting off the field. When our safeties and DBs see it coming they are jumping routes and blowing stuff up in the backend. The thing about zones, you just can't let QBs sit in the pocket and wait for receivers to find soft spots. Golding has to get more creative with his blitz packages and make teams go the long way.

Not everyone agrees, but I think if we could just get the right tool in our guy's hands against these elite offenses things could change dramatically. This season.
