Mullen’s game plan

It was masterful and very nearly worked. I wonder if one small tweak would have pushed it over the top. What do you think would have happened if after a first half of total domination in TOP, Mullen and the Bulldogs came out in the 2nd half and cranked up the tempo? They began stretching us from sideline to sideline to try and wear us down even more which I think was a good idea. Could it have been made even better by playing fast, going no huddle and trying to run the defense to death while also getting more plays and thus more opportunities to put points on the board? I fear that Gus may do just that: pound Johnson the first half just like State did but then amp it up after halftime and play up tempo. What are your thoughts on this strategy?

Maybe, but maybe we run well, get them on a couple 3 and outs and score quickly and all of a sudden they are down 14 points.

I thought the fake injuries after our big plays was a nice touch.
Seriously though, it was a great gameplan. I wouldn’t mind us borrowing it for the Auburn game.

Agree, though I'm not sure we can grind out 3-4 yards per carry on 1st down like they did.

Lol I counted 4 fake injuries and 2 timeouts just on that drive.

The game plan was done for two reasons; our defense was thin and their defense was thin.
They didn't want to get in an offensive shootout. So cranking up the tempo in the second half was not an option Mullen felt comfortable doing.

Ive always been a proponent of faking injuries against teams that want to run the blitz krieg all game on offense.

It was a good game plan, especially with our LBs situation. It worked well, but they also benefited from that ref no call on the obvious offensive PI (push-off/down) and the dumb leaping penalty. There was another key 3rd & long where we almost sacked Fitz but our edge rusher failed to keep outside contain and he scrambled for a first down. That's 2 or 3 of their scoring drives we could've/should've stopped. We also nearly made a couple of picks. Their punter boomed a 62 yarder in the air. Seemed like most of the "bounces" went their way.

Do we have enough defenders to do this? I'm not sure we'll have anyone left on the defensive side of the ball.

If MSU was faking injuries (and it seems like they was) it was a gift to our defense to get much needed rest.

Gus is going to try and go as fast as possible from the start against us. He knows Saban hates defending it and he wants our inexperienced LBs out there with their heads spinning.

Perhaps. But, considering how LSU and MSU did in the trenches against us, our LB issues, MSU's TOP, and that we're dangerous offensively, I think Gus may continue to mix it up situationally like he's been doing.
