At least by not making the CFP this season, Bama's streak of being the Vegas favorite every game can continue on since Lord knows when.

2015 vs Georgia in Athens. And that turned out pretty good.

Bama opened that week as a 2 and half point dog against Georgia, was a pickem by game time.

2011 NCG against LSU, Bama started as a 2 and a half point dog, but was a 2 point favorite at game time.

The 09 SEC Championship game was the last time back was a dog going into the game. Was about a 2 point dog.

If you want to look at a silver lining for not making the playoff, it’s that for the first time in 6 years, Saban & the staff can focus on recruiting & administrative stuff surrounding ESD & the coaching carousel.

Sure, we’d all rather be in the playoff but the amount of BS Saban has had to juggle the last few years during December is probably pretty taxing.

Also my credit card debt is $0 and my cash balances are up.

Not flying to San Francisco/Dallas/Phoenix is surprisingly good for the old check book.

The reality is we would get boat raced in the playoffs and have to listen to whatever narrative all season long:

Lose to LSU? LOLOLOL.....LSU is the new big dog. Ogeron has Saban's number. We comin' fro your 'cruits. Burrow Burrow Burrow....Saban is old and the game has passed him by.

Lose to Clemson? LOLOLOL. Dabo owns Saban. Dabo and Clemson have Saban's number. Clemson is the new dynasty. Saban is old and the game has passed him by.

Lose to OU? LOLOLOL. Revenge of Jalen. Saban ran off the wrong QB. Saban getting old and the game has passed him by.

Yep - absolutely agree. Ideal scenario was to beat Auburn and go to the Orange Bowl and beat Virginia 57-10. That obviously didn't happen, but going and beating Michigan, finishing 11-2 and maybe even having a few guys pissed off at the end of the year and coming back wouldn't be awful.

Getting blown out in the playoff would have been a disaster after 44-16, IMHO. Playoff appearances are worth it regardless of result for most programs, but we're a little unique. Going and getting hammered again would have blown up our aura much more than being left out.

Just my opinion.

Never thought of that, but you are right. And I think we probably would've gotten blown out by LSU, OSU, or Clemson.

With our depleted defense, Alabama would have given up a minimum of 40 points to these teams.
Could our offense have kept pace? Perhaps. It did well enough on offense against Auburn. Did well enough, with tua, against LSU.
If we have no turnovers, or even win the turnover margin, we'd be fine.
But, our lack of discipline would prevent any of the optimistic outcomes to occur.
I'd expect about a 10 point loss to any of those teams.

Probably. But despite losing 2 starting ILBs (who were replaced by freshman that played just ok under the circumstances, a top-3 quarterback in college football, and some of our best interior defensive lineman, we were still probably just as good as the #4 team in the playoffs. Absent getting completely blown out in the semis, most honest people would give us the benefit of the doubt
