Metal Detectors Coming to BDS

Asking fans to arrive earlier to games
I think on the surface, it’s clearly a good thing. However, if it creates scenes like we saw in Atlanta or Tampa where thousands of fans are corralled into unorganized waiting lines, then I’m 100% against it. It just shifts the soft target for some nutjob from inside the stadium to outside the stadium and makes for a really miserable experience.

Just need to buy plastic flasks. It will workout.

It should be the standard at every sporting event with that many people. Disney has it down to a science and Universal made it an art form using X-ray machines. It’s the only way to help ensure people are safe. Football is a huge American icon and the fact a game hasn’t been targeted yet is amazing to me.

I agree that it is shocking but you’ll never convince me that the security lines I was in at the last two National Championship games was “safe.” Thousands of people jammed into a small confined space. Some nutjob could’ve just as easily taken out people there than inside the stadium. Hell, you could’ve set off an m 80 in the middle of those lines and I assure you multiple people would’ve died or been injured from being trampled. It was a disaster.
Again, if it runs smoothly then it won’t be a big issue. I’m cool with eliminating a soft target...but let’s not create another one.

Does no one use minis anymore?

I lived in the Dominican Republic back in the late 80s. First place I had ever been frisked in my life was going into the baseball stadium in Santo Domingo. There was a box full of handguns that people had checked sitting on a table by the gate.

Am I the only person that has never had a problem with getting alcohol into a stadium?

Just on a side note, it is really amazing how very few attacks happen in general. It is such an easy thing to accomplish, which suggests that the threat of terrorism isn't quite as extreme as a lot of people seem to think.
Obviously, it being so easy demands us to be hyper-vigilant against it, but the rhetoric that is necessitated to get the policies pushed seems paint a somewhat distorted perception of how the world really is.

Without violating anything...
You can thank a variety of George Dubba rules out in place that have actively prevented/kept safe/deterred such events. Not impossible, but would take a very disciplined group to coordinate and/or a complete rogue outlier.

I disagree. Bush's policies certainly are helpful in that regard, but lets be real, any one of us could very easily commit a significant act of terror. I mean, even without being fancy, if you just think about all the guns that we own here on the Bama board, a random selection of 5 of us could get our names permantly etched into the dark side of history.

Yeah, I by no means am suggesting any partisan bs. I just think it is important as we alter our lives pretty inconveniently more and more (like enforcing metal detectors at BDS) out of a definite necessity, to remember that all these precautions don't really mean that we should live in fear (like a lot of people seem to do).

It feels like you actually do agree.
I'm talking about the difficulty of planning, coordinating and executing a deliberate act of terrorism against a US tgt funded and directed by an outside agent or monitored US threat.
Random a-holes with pipe bombs and/or assault rifles are much more likely to slip through the cracks. A large reason why clear bag, random pat downs, and metal detector policies and/or delays don't bother me.
It's a minor inconvenience for a bit more piece of mind.

Again, the experiences I’m speaking of were more than a minor inconvenience. At the SECG and National Championship games, the metal detector lines were complete clusterfricks.

I've attended a schitload of events with no major issues. VhS in oxford has them and it is not an issue.
The UA plan I saw was talking about 100+ machines and something close to a 1 million dollar investment. And, I think they did a test run at senior day last year.
I think it will work out.

It's literally never been on my mind every time I've been to a sporting event.

No I haven’t and you continue to miss my point that those security line situations were every bit as inviting for one of those to occur.
I look forward to your plan to lock down the Walk of Champions.

Nope. It's insanely easy unless you're a student.
I really don't see the point of metal detectors. I've never felt unsafe at BDS. A crazed man could do just as much, if not more, damage on the Quad or the strip or the soccer lots or downtown than he could inside the stadium.
Just another inconvenience to make games less attractive to attend.

Hell, it was easy as a student as long as you didn't dress like you were in a frat.

Was an absolute shite show. I still can't believe that place has hosted a couple Super Bowls.
