Only if he started a game from the wildcat. I can't recall if he ever did.

2009 vs. Virginia Tech

I’ve always wondered if that counted as an official “start” at QB or not.

That was a good get. Mark did start. Sidenote: I was in Gatlinburg that weekend and the VATech folks, as thick as flies, were coming up to me adamant that Beamer Ball was about to crush our dreams again. Sunday, those maroon flags were flying at half-staff and both fan bases knew Bama was on their way.

Beamer Ball and stupid penalties kept them in the game, however. If you look at the stats, that came shouldn't have been close. They had 155 yards to our 498; and 11 first downs to our 22. Yet they were leading to start the fourth quarter.

You're right. They barely had their first 1st down by the end of the first quarter yet they had a TD on a long kickoff return. But eventually, they got beat at their own game. Beamer Ball let them down and they had a number of critical mistakes on special team plays. They still had a very good team with Tyrod Taylor at QB and a very good defense.

What blew my mind is how Croyle and Pennington both went down against Georgia and Avalos had to come in to play against Southern Miss. He was 2-8 for 6 yards to finish out against Georgia and 3-7 for 12 yards in a 17-3 win (as a starter) against Southern Miss.
