This will probably only resonate with a handful of board members but Bill Lumpkin was the sports editor for the Birmingham Post Herald back when newspapers were more meaningful as a source of news. He was also a graduate of UA.

He hired finebum and encouraged finebum to stir up hate between Ala and the Aubs. Finebum pretty much said that yesterday on his radio program. He told Finebum that keeping the Ala Aub rivalry stirred up sells. And Finebum was really good at it in his early days. Lumpkin was a dip.

His job was to sell newspapers and the advertising that goes with it. Looks like he did his job well. I had a subscription for the Post-Herald and the News for over 20 years. My 85-year old mom still gets the paper News delivered three times a week. A dying breed (obviously).

I worked in the newspaper business for many years. I actually preferred reading the Post Herald over the The Birmingham News but we all know who owned the building, the press, and who paid us. Once it went afternoon and Finebaum stopped writing a column - it was dead.

That is sort of like what Charles Barkley was talking about the other day. Politicians in the US try to get half the voters mad at the other half of the voters, so they can keep their jobs. Its all about keeping their jobs. So is that what "reporting" has evolved to? In this day and time, it certainly is. Just chasing the almighty dollar. Doesnt matter who you trash along the way.

One of my majors was journalism and I worked as a reporter then the copy desk at a daily paper for four years. I thought that’s what I wanted to do with my life but I decided I liked feeding my kids more! I used to read 3-4 newspapers a day, front to back. One of them was the Post-Herald. Had to worry about getting newsprint on everything. Different time.

Birmingham is only big enough to support one daily paper. That was the main reason the Post-Herald died.
