Well, someone had better bring him some food, water, and toilet paper or else it is going to get messy.

He might not be interested in any of the jobs currently open but the coaching carousel is just starting. I'd love for him to stay another year, but there could be a job yet to open up that is just too good to turn down.

Whatever Spanky...

I just posted the word if anyone was "concerned" over his departure. It's not happening this year.

I just think at some point you have to take the plunge if you want to be a head coach. Kirby may want to be a lifelong assistant. Nothing wrong with that, but if he wants to be a head coach, at some point, he is going to have to say, "Yes." even if the job is not the perfect one.

Kirby is only 35 I think. He has another 3 or 4 years before it starts becoming time to put up or shut up. I think he wants to be a HC. Otherwise he wouldn't have interviewed for multiple jobs over the last couple of years. He is just holding out for the kind of job Muschamp got. He also isn't stupid enough to take a job like Auburn or Arkansas where he would have to go up against his former boss.

Pretty Good thoughts Santa; need to add he currently makes @$1mil a year at 35 years of age. Why in world would he be in a hurry to advance his career to the Head Coach Status?

He's coaching for one of the best Schools and Head Coaches in the business.
They(him and Nick) obviously get along.
His defenses have been top 5 for the last 5 years.
He has the best players to work with year in year out.
He is already making over a $mil a year and will continue to get raises as the market demands.

At his young age why take the risk? It seems like he's got a pretty damn good job.

I think age is irrelevant. This will make year 3 or so that Smart's hat has been thrown in the proverbial ring. I don't want him to take a mediocre job, but I think he has another 2 years or so before his name begins to become stale. There's is also the added pressure to perform if he continues to hold out for the perfect job.

In an ideal world, he goes to some Conference USA school where he can build a decent program up into a a contender for conference titles. During his time there, he learns everything he needs to know about being a head coach and creates a strong relationship with recruits around the Southeast. Then, when Saban retires, Smart makes a glorious return and keeps the good times rolling in title town.

He turns 37 next month. Doesn't matter. He still thinks the Bama job is his when Saban leaves. He's thought this since the end of 2009 season. I think he has reason to feel this way (or at least he did at one time). That said, if a very good opportunity presented itself I think he would entertain it. I classify very good as Arky or UT (or for certain UGA). Not AU. AU is a good job, just not in Kirby's mind a fit for him.

He has interviewed for several jobs over the years. Saban encourages all of his assistants to go interview or talk with schools that offer because it is good practice for when you find a job you really want.

Would we give it to him? I think it might be worth a shot, depending upon other available candidates.

I know we've been down that road before but this could be different. He has great OJT.

Depends on if he gets an offer and how much it is. It would stun a ton of people - on both sides - if he became the AU coach. Saban endorsed him interviewing, so they know him getting the job is a possibility.

I would be surprised. He should hold out another year or back channel his way into the UTenn job. I'm not an AU hater, but I don't think it is the right fit for Smart at this time in his career. Too much of a rebuilding project. Gonna take 2 years and no guarantees of success.

If he takes it then the money is right, he must not feel like anything to the NCAA stuff, and he must think Saban staying put for longer than Kirby's patience will allow.
