Jay's son

A caller asked Jay what qualities he sees in his son that are like him and things he needs to work on. Jay said well first off, he is way ahead of me with his understanding of football. And Jay said one thing that is just like me is he is a late bloomer. A yr ago he was 5-9 and now is is almost 6-1 and growing. Jay said he was like that. Under 6 ft 190 lbs when he started at Ala and a yr later was over 6-1 about 6-2 and 225 lbs.

I’ve watched him, the kid can sling the ball. Was pretty surprised.

Interesting take.
Jay certainly isn't what I would call good for insight on his son given that he's a tad biased. I also think it would be unrealistic to expect the kid to ever be more than a practice player at UA. Maybe he'll prove me wrong.

The kid will be the 4th QB and that is needed just to conduct practice sessions. Best of luck to him. Going against the 1's and 2's everyday at practice will test him for sure.

I'll never get the hate for a former QB who helped lead us to a national championship. Over the last 10 years I have seen very little but hate for the guy on message boards such as these. And for what? He doesn't stroke Alabama's shaft like Al Del Greco strokes Auburn's?

Yeah, I've noticed negative comments about Jay over the years. I don't live in Alabama. What's the story behind that?

Really has nothing to do with his radio show even though I think he is pretty awful at that. The Opening Drive is pretty terrible all around.
There are a lot of stories about Jay being a first class a-hole despite the choir boy persona. I’ve seen it first hand and I’ve heard it from others who experienced it as well.

I guess I've never perceived him to have a choir boy persona, so I've never been let down.

Really has nothing to do with him letting anyone down. More to do with him trying to take advantage of people.

Instead of beating around the bush with innuendos and half-way allegations, why don't you just spit it out?

I work with a guy that was Barker's neighbor for many years, and is close friends with him and his family. Has nothing but great things to say about him. And the guy I work with is one of the nicer guys I've ever met, so I believe him.
I'm not saying that Fairhope Tider is wrong, but I would like to know how he has taken advantage of people.

I’ve posted about it before. Without getting into too many details, Jay ran a pyramid scheme about a decade ago and used his name/credibility to swindle Bama fans. He’s also notorious for not paying debts and trying to get out of them by either leveraging his radio show or threatening their livelihood. One situation involved him owing $30K to a contractor. After avoiding the contractor for weeks, the contractor finally caught him at home and demanded payment. Jay tried to get out of it by offering some commercial time on the OD instead. Another story about Jay pulling a similar stunt over a traffic ticket in Shelby County only that one ended with Jay pulling the “Do you know who I am?” card and threatening to get the Cop fired. I could keep going.
He’s not literally Hitler or anything like that. I’m sure there are stories of him being a solid citizen. He’s just a huge douchebag IMO.

Yeah, he's not horrible, but if he ever plays for Bama it either is in a blowout situation or something has gone terribly wrong for us.

No he will not. There are already other PWO QBs on the roster.

Jay Barker was average at best for 90% of his career and it was very obvious in the national championship vs. Miami.
You can point to the OSU game and 1994 but overall....he’s a garbage QB.

Yea, all Barker did was win. I remember one year Ole Sis was stacking the line most of the game daring Barker to throw. At the end of the game the announcer called him "Air" Barker. He could sling it when he had to. Braxton has a good arm and is a better runner than his dad. If Braxton has a late growth spurt like his dad then he will certainly help Bama down the road. Probably, not as a starter, but a reliable backup.
