At least the dude never gets injured.

That’s a start.

He is actually built to be a perfect strong safety. Elite size and speed for it. Fact is that he will still have a role as a quarterback this year in some capacity. I get the point of your thread though. My Hope is that Anoma is a quick learner and can provide depth behind Miller or Jennings.

Meh

A 6'2" safety with a 40 in the 4.5 range would be elite speed for his size at the position, most definitely.

He doesn’t run like a safety. He glides when he runs. He would not translate to defense in my uneducated opinion.

He would "glide" to the ball as fast or faster than most strong safeties playing college football today. It is all just speculation at his expense regardless. He is an offensive minded football player and quarterback is the position his father groomed him to play. If he had it between the ears he may be an elite quarterback but he can't even make the right read on a simple read option play much less an rpo.

He does have elite measurables for a safety and may or may not have the frame for more weight to play linebacker. My guess though is that he wouldn't do well at either of those positions either because he just can't process the play and make the right decision of where to be etc. Lots of guys have come through the program and had us wondering why they never saw much playing time. That could be why.

Disclaimer: these statements were obviously just my opinion formed by watching the guy play for two years. I am not calling him stupid either. It just is what it is.

If Hurts fits anything on defense, it's edge rusher. Explosive, fast, physically strong, good change of direction, etc. He'd be a demon off the edge.

I agree with you that he's bad (as in really bad) reading defenses, but I repectfully disagree with you that he could be an elite qb. He's also a shitty passer.

It's sad to see how some fans treat a guy who has won 27 games for us under center in the past two years.

I don't want any player to be mistreated, but the above statement is not true. Hurts did not win 26 games for Bama. The team won 26 games while he was playing 1 of the 22 principle positions.

Additionally, the GA game was number 26, and he should get absolutely no credit for that win. So he's 25-2 as a starter, in my opinion. I'd wager a guess that given our roster talent, Mac Jones would have a similar record in that stretch.

The guy busted his arse, suited up, and won football games. And he did it with class.

For all the rah-rah bullshite people do for the 'Rudy' types that give it their all in practice, it's chicken shite to trash a guy that was out there picking up first downs, taking sacks to avoid turning it over, hitting (and, yes, often missing) open receivers.

It's fine to critique the guy and hope that he'll develop or that Joe Montana will come along and replace him (personally, I think some are in for a rude awakening with all the Tua hype). But the sense of entitlement from behind a keyboard from some in our fanbase is getting pretty annoying.

Were you here defending Calvin Ridley last season when he was being unjusifiably skewered for being frustrated at the lack of a passing game?

You know, the Calvin Ridley that was a freshman all american with Jake Coker throwing the ball, actually helped the team win 2 national titles (and one loss that certainly wasn't his fault), and is 41-3 in his career at Alabama.

Were you?

I totally agree.

I also beleive that it's silly to tout how much Hurts has given his all and "busted his arse" like it's something special or different from 50 other Bama players from last year. "Busting your arse" is what it takes to see the field at any position for Nick Saban. It's not special - it's required of everyone.

Hurts' performance is worthy of both praise and criticism, and there's no reason to run from either.

This is actually the best idea I've heard yet. However, every position takes a different set of intangibles. The cold truth is he probably wouldn't make the two deep at any other position, and his best bet is either to transfer, or enjoy being a valuable backup QB on the #1 team

I think he could certainly contribute for Bama at nearly any offensive skill position, most notably RB, H/Split-End, and WR. This late in his career, I doubt he could move to defense and contribute, although if he has a mean streak somewhere, I think he could certainly rush the passer.

In reality, however, I have all but talked myself into us having a pseudo 2-QB system, similar to Chris Leak and Tebow, meaning Tua would take most of the meaningful snaps, and Hurts would have short yardage/goal line/Wildcat packages. Having said that, Hurts may make a go of it in September and try to win the job, and if he fails, shut it down for the year and use his redshirt, and then transfer and play 2 at another school. My guess would be Houston, but who knows.

I do think this new redshirt rule changes things dramatically as far as Hurts' options go.
