It's Tua Tagovailoa's job to lose, former Alabama quarterback Jake Coker says.

I don't know about that. We haven't seen Mac Jones yet. After the first pick by Tua, myself and a few others will be calling for Jones. Back-up quarterback U.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahasahahahaha

But seriously this 100% gonna happen. At Bama, more than any other school, the backup qb is the most popular guy on campus every year.

Btw I supported Hurts as the starter until the auburn game but I'm guilty too. I still believe if Kiffin didn't have something against Coker that we would've won 2 straight 'ships. Sims, as good of a teammate as he was, just didn't have the arm to scare the better teams and they loaded the box against us

I was telling one of my buddies the exact same thing this weekend.

I’ve seen all my life, time and time again

Hell I remember when folks were talking up Avalos and Pennington like they were the second coming of Stabler and Namath. Of course we caw how they turned out.

I mean, it's a funny joke, but it's totally untrue. The backup QB only becomes popular once the starting QB becomes entirely ineffective. That never happened with McCarron and Coker. It won't happen with Tua either

Don't know about funny but it is a joke. When we have a solid starter we don't call for a backup. We may get pissed when he does something stupid and he will do something stupid but no one will call for Mac. We know this because Tua is gonna be a beast even as a first year starter. I almost feel sorry for the rest of the SEC. A Nick Saban football team with a legit, dual threat, 5 star beast at quarterback isn't fair to the rest of the conference. Should be a ncaa bylaw for real.

Not with AJ but there were plenty of posters on this board who did not like Coker in 2015. He just turned things up a notch in the IB and two playoff games which resulted in a rebirth of Jake Coker fans.

Greg McElroy on Alabama's Jalen Hurts vs. Tua Tagovailoa battle (BamaOnLine)

quote:

SEC Network analyst and former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy says Nick Saban will drag out the Crimson Tide's quarterback competition between Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa "as long as humanly possible" to keep the loser from leaving the program.

McElroy made the comments on the nation's most talked-about spring practice battle under center during a recent interview with SEC Country.

“Every single throw in practice is charted,” McElroy said. “Every single one. From warmups to routes on air, to 7-on-7, to 1-on-1s to team drills. They’re all charted. And it’s all about efficiencies. So, whoever’s the most efficient player, makes the right decisions when to go where and do so accurately, that’s the guy who will win the competition.”

Saban has gone as far as saying he's not opposed to using a two-quarterback system next season to try and find a role for both players. Tagovailoa, who carried the Crimson Tide to a win over Georgia in the national title game with three touchdown passes after intermission, injured his finger during the first week of practice and has been limited since.

McElroy believes the competition is all but decided within the program.

“I know to the media and people that aren’t allowed behind closed doors, we’re all speculating the whole time," McElroy said. "But usually you have a pretty good grasp of who is going to be the quarterback if you’re in the locker room, if you’re at practice every day. The players know who is the most capable and this competition will probably be no different.”

McElroy believes Tagovailoa, who currently has the nation's fourth-best preseason Heisman odds at 25/2 according to online sportsbook 5Dimes, is the frontrunner to win the job.

“He’s extremely well-liked in the locker room,” McElroy said. “The guys really respond to his leadership style. He’s extremely friendly. And a very humble young man, too. So, the guys naturally gravitate to him and they know he can play.”

Tagovailoa completed 63.6 percent of his passes (49-of-77) with 11 touchdowns and two interceptions in nine games as a freshman, totaling 636 yards through the air. The dual-threat signal caller added 27 carries for 133 rushing yards and two touchdowns and finished first among quarterbacks in the SEC in passing efficiency (204.0) in limited action.

Hurts is Alabama's two-year returning starter and earned SEC Offensive Player of the Year honors as a true freshman during the 2016 campaign. He's 27-2 as the Crimson Tide's QB1 with 40 touchdown passes, 4,861 yards and 10 interceptions over his first 29 career games. Hurts has also rushed for 1,809 yards and 21 scores.

Tua has already reached legendary status. The first person that calls for Tua to be benched better duck, because there will probably be an epic beat down. People say he has only played one half of a college football game, but he really played a good bit. And there are those that say he makes bad throws--like the pick 6 against TN. (it should have never been a pick 6 if the refs had done their job). But, what those people don't say is he went right back out, and the coaches didn't pull in the reins. It was pass, pass pass, and a 40 yard TD bomb. I don't remember since the wishbone days where our second string would go our there and just run up and down the field on the other team--like we did this past season. The dude can play and everyone knows it.

Really hard to say that with any real confidence given that Coker didn't arrive until the summer and didn't really come into his own until towards the end of the season he started (i love Coker btw, one of the best story's of any Alabama player).

Also Sims had one of the best and prettiest deep balls we have seen at bama in recent years. Mid-range accuracy wasn't what you would hope for. But that 2014 team wasn't at the same level defensively as we have been the last 2/3 years as it is always pretty cyclical.

I love Jalen and what he has done the last two years, but Tua has to be the starter.

Has to be.

Coach Steve Superior, was asked about how Saban could handle our QB battle. The Ole Ball Coach first talked about how Jalen was a great athlete and he could play several positions like QB, running back, tight end or H back. The he said now Tua can really throw the ball, he is just an electrifying quarterback. Im pretty sure the Old Ball Coach would not have retired if Tua had been on his roster the year he stepped down.

Tubberville on the Ala QBs. Said Jalen has all the experience and the wins. But he got in the championship game and they put everybody on the line of scrimmage and he (Jalen) couldn't complete a pass. He has to get better at throwing the ball. They put that young kid in there and he did "pretty good".
