Is the 2017 better or worse than the 2008 team?

With the injuries, I think worse.

Am I being overly pessemistic?

I think its weird to ask such questions when we just passed our first "hard" test by two touchdowns, and are sitting at 9-0.

I think this team is really good, and even with the injuries, you saw our young guys step up and play very well.

People clearly aren't giving any credit to how hard LSU played us last night. They came to play, and we still beat them 24-10.

Better. Definitely better. I don't know that this team is on the level of last year's or 2011, but few teams are.

What on the '17 team is better than the '08 team other than QB? I don't think it's being pessimistic to say they were probably better. I would trade for that oline in '08 in a heart beat.

The offensive line is worse.
The QB is better by far.
Running back are a bit better.
Receivers better.
Defense is overall better.

So 2017 is better than 08. But I'm not sure it's as good as any Bama team since 2008.

The 08 team wouldn't be able to stop Hurts. Other then O-line, this year's team is better.

But Arenas in the return game was a game changer in 2008.

That’s another area in which 2017 sucks.

The 2017 team is absolute garbage compared to the last like....7-8 Bama teams.

I think people aren’t seeing the illusion that Hurts creates. He puts us in shitty situations and makes himself look like a hero when he bails the team out of it at the last second. See the 2016 national championship game.

Personally, here's how I look at the Saban Era teams:

Tier 1
2016/2011

Tier 2
2015/2012/2009

Tier 3
2014/2013/2008

Tier 4
2010

Tier 5
2007

Obviously the 2010 team was WAY better than 07, so pretty big gap between those last two tiers

I like this system of tiers.

I think 2017 is way better than 08. Deeper, more talented overall. Especially at the RB position. Just my opinion, though.

I would place 2015 in tier 1. Fierce front seven, Heisman RB, a quality QB, violent pass rush, brick wall run defense, and multiple other talented pieces on offense (Howard, Ridley, and others). If Coker starts against Ole Miss, 2015 Bama would have been the first 15-0 college team since 1897.

Once again, just my opinion.

Mine...

T1: 2009, 2011, 2012

T2: 2015, 2016 (DL)

T3: 2008, 2010 (T1 talent), 2013, 2014, 2017

T4: 2007

I think 2016 Bama smokes 2009 and 2012 (though 12 had a better offense).

The 2016 front 7 against the 2012 OL

2012 OL was a pleasure to watch. That was an 18-wheeler-like group. They would run defensive fronts over, and a RB right behind them that would flatten any defenders who weren't laid out already. One of the most physically punishing rushing attacks in college football history .

I think the 2012 OL struggles a bit against the pass rush of 16. The 2016 group could rush the QB inside and outside the tackles. Slight edge to 16 in that match-up.

I think 2009 beats all of them. All American kicker, RB, CB and return man. 2 Doak Walker award winners, a Heisman winner, an all pro wide receiver....I could name more but the team was absolutely loaded AND was highly motivated. Rolando McClain I would say was out 2nd best linebacker under Nick Saban behind CJ.

That team was just stacked at every position and the only weakness was the QB. He wasn’t asked to do much in the first place anyway. They made an all world Florida team look pedestrian at best and beat the championship opponent by double digits.

They are STILL the only team to play #1 and #2 in back to back games in history.

The only team that I think would give them a run for their money was 2015. Solid O-Line, AMAZING D-Line, and an equally solid return man. QB and tight end were studs as well.

As far as resume goes, yes (with the accomplishments, undefeated record, talent, etc.). But on the field, no.

2015 and 2016 front seven units were far better than 09. Just as strong against the run, better depth, and a much better pass-rush.

This is such a great conversation too, because we've had so many great ones. For me it goes (excluding current players): Foster -> Mosley -> Hightower -> McClain -> Ragland -> Johnson -> DePriest
