Is our first team defense just that good?
They really looked sharp even with the vanilla game plan. My new year's vow to quit bitching so much is keeping me from talking about the kicking game but the DL and secondary looked really good. I honestly expected the offense with Tua would carve them up. You guys know I love to worry so I am fearful of the new offense but as a defensive guy I am encouraged.

They are the best defense Tua will play against during the regular season at least. Also the offense is switching to being a little more pro style as oppose to the RPO. Tua is learning and adjusting.

Honestly the way the rules are set up in CFB the RPOs are the superior philosophy. Hope we don’t get too far away from it

Our secondary ought to be nasty, and our defensive front 4 looks fairly stacked at this juncture. ILB has a ways to go, but seems more promising after Aday.

However, no one should take anything super meaningful from the Spring game, which is simply the final scrimmage of spring camp, but for public viewing.

It's a fraction of a fraction of the reps these players have gotten and is as vanilla as 2 teams can get. There is literally no scheming, and no attempt to get an advantage over the opposition.

Also, several starters were held out or limited, most notably 40% of our starting Oline.

I was pleased with what I saw today, but no strong opinions should be formed one way or another.

I worried about our front four last year especially nose tackle and it ended up pretty good though depth was non existent. This year I think it will be even better even though we lost Q. I agree that depth will be better and the secondary was all over our receivers during A day. I was more impressed with the defensive backs than any other unit on the field. If we just get a modest pass rush our pass defense is gonna be elite.

I think mainly it was a practice game

Don't get in the way of me worrying over something so insignificant George. You can't take that away from me.

The defense should be enough for everyone in the SEC. Georgia is losing a bunch of receivers who were huge reasons that the last 2 games with them were so close

A little bit worried about the A&M game but qbs with Monds accuracy are not what beats us

The wild card of course is the booger eaters

This.

I'd by lying if I said I didn't have concerns about the offense, but they come from Sark's lone game as Alabama OC and his stint at the Falcons rather than what happened in a glorified practice session.

Sark called an excellent game up until Bo Scarborough's leg bone quit, which then caused our Oline to quit for the next couple of series. His only real fault was continuing to run the hurry up in the 4th quarter when we were failing to move the ball, although it should be noted that Saban directly stated around that time that our O worked better in the hurry up, so it is what it is. Outside of that, he did an excellent job in a really tough circumstance.

No Oline, no QB with any experience, suspect skill players, Malzhan calling the plays = Bama by 3+ TDs if we have a healthy defense by that time.

FYI for any that care, the next years' auburn Oline (2020) may be the worst online in the history of D1 CFB.

I think what AU fans are expecting this to be a good season are probably hoping for the fluke season where everyone thinks they’re going to be bad but it turns out they’re good.

The brass at au tried to get Malzhan to resign by forcing conditions on him that no coach would say yes to, and he said yes. Any coaching moves must be revenue neutral, no new coaches can have contracts more than 1 year, etc. Just crazy stuff. He blindly believes that he's the smartest guy in the room and that auburn is "just a couple of players away."

They had a horrible Oline last year and "fixed" it by signing 2 Olinemen in their last recruiting class - both guards. They have thus far been unable to attract Olinemen via transfer, and the same goes for QB. Hell, they had a transfer from Umass start for them last year on the line. fricking Umass...

auburn will be decent on D no doubt, but I expect their offense to be a dumpster fire and Malzhan no longer employed at auburn after this year.

I hope, but guys - again - do you really think the offense used even 10% of what they have?

It was mainly just drop back and let it fly and runs off tackle. That was it.

The defensive unit just sat back and played safe.

Even Saban said it during the game when they interviewed him - the other team hardly blitzed because Tua would have scored at will.
