Thought this might be a decent off season topic. History that might not be well known but interesting and/or odd.
I will start it with a story about a 1984 football game "decided" by the Alabama Supreme court.
Alabama High School Football Historical Society
Phil Campbell vs Cordova, mid season game between top 5 ranked area opponents. Crazy story involving an alleged illegal play at end of game, an ensuing KO return and personal foul that gave a team a chance to kick a fg with no time remaining...which was good until an illegal procedure call moved the ball back 5 yards for another try..which was missed.
Game over...
until Cordova filed suit in Walker county and got a ruling in their favor. Ball game....
Until Phil Campbell countered with a suit in Franklin county and got a ruling in their favor.
And on to the State Supreme Court.
And now the crazy part of the story.
The game decided playoffs...and the Supreme court made its ruling 8 hours before the kickoff of the first round playoff game vs. Lamar County. Lamar County spent a week preparing for both schools and did not know who they played until shortly before their Friday pep rally.

Seems like a good place for a random fact.
John David Smelser won Mr. Baseball in Alabama back in 2007, helping Hillcrest to a state title. However he couldn't stay healthy and ended up giving up baseball in 2010:
He ended up at ETSU:
A few weeks back he led Tuscaloosa Academy won their second straight AISA girl's basketball title with him as their head coach. He's 30.
I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him work his way up the HS coaching ranks in Alabama over the next 10-15 years. Dude has always been a winner, no matter the sport or who he's coaching.

A Tuscaloosa native who came to Alabama this year after one season at Jacksonville State and another at Shelton State, Smelser had played in 16 of Alabama's 19 games before the injury, starting 12. He was batting .306, scoring 12 runs with 7 RBIs.
He ended up at ETSU:

As a graduate assistant, Smelser helped coach the East Tennesee State University women’s basketball team to a WNIT appearance in 2015. He will complete his Master of Arts in Sports Management from ETSU this summer.

The Penetration Rule
How tie high school football games used to be settled in Alabama.
Alabama High School Historical Society
Just better if you read their description and the story of the 1972 Banks vs Davidson game.
ETA: Jeff Rutledge involved also a David Cutcliffe mention.
