The only year that really compares in terms of Front 7 usage of freshman is 2013 - A'Shawn Robinson, Jonathan Allen, Tim Williams, Ryan Anderson, Reuben Foster - and that was mainly just A'Shawn having a monster year and Allen learning his way.

It was truly uncharted territory for our defense. I wish I had the time to go through and look at other Big 6 schools and see if they'd had years like that - I'm sure some have - and see what their overall results were.

Wow. I knew it was the youngest defense in a long time, but I didn’t realize the freshman contributions were that significant.

Same here - I figured it was comparable to 2013 or 2010, but there really isn't a comparison. It was a one of a kind situation in the Front 7.

2014 defense
The older guys on the 2014 defense simply weren't all that talented. And ran into a pretty damned stacked Ohio State offense
Landon Collins-2nd Round 2015
Xavier Dickson-7th round 2015
Ashawn Robinson-2nd round 2016
Cyrus Jones-2nd round 2016
Reggie Ragland-2nd round 2016
Jarran Reed-2nd round 2016
6 guys drafted over 2 years has gotta be the lowest since Saban's earliest seasons. Interestingly, Collins and Ashawn were the only ones in your stats that made a huge impact as a freshman.

I was literally about to post that exact thing
Definitely the least overall talented defense of the post-2009 Saban era. Without a close 2nd, honestly. And on top of that it was the last upper class group of beefy non-spread defenders we had.

I wonder if the 2016 defense has more TFL than 2011 is because 2011 generated more stops?
Posted on 2/11/20 at 3:40 pm to The Silverback
Looking at all the stats has me very optimistic about this defense coming up. With all the freshmen contributors, they have at least gained some experience... I really believe we will see a major turn around as long as we remain healthy.

Great work and thanks. I have been pretty hard on Golding (not as hard as most) but he really was dealt a shitty hand in 2019.

TFL/game
2011 - 7.39
2016 - 7.87
TFL/Play
2011 - 0.133
2016 - 0.120
2011 defense played an average of 55.4 plays per game over 13 games.
2016 defense played an average of 65.5 plays per game over 15 games.
2016 both played more games and more plays per game. If you break it down to TFL per play, 2011 actually generated more.

Yep - stats like this don't prove he is a really good coach, but I do think they show that it's unfair to judge him based on 2019.

The 2011 Alabama defense was just an immovable wall. There were a lot of plays where the offense gained 0-2 yards.

Well said!! Great work also SOG... I’m with about Golding. I think he is better than what we saw this year.
