Three years ago Greg Byrne, the UA AD, changed the employment terms for assistant coaches to be severely negatively incentivized for leaving only after 3-5 years, depending on position - if that makes sense. This is fact. I would also believe that they were also positively incentivized; Steve Sarkesian in particular was promised to be the considered choice for the HC position if he stays until CNS retires. He's been offered this opportunity based on UA has informally contacted Dabo to gauge his interest in the UA HC position when it comes available and he is not interested. Dabo is not concerned about the panache associated with being the HC at Bama even though he was a DB on the '92 NC team; he's more concerned about winning championships and being a positive influence on athletes. This is what drove Gene Stallings and Gene passed that along to Dabo. Clemson now has $$$ rolling in, Dabo is compensated more than his wildest dreams, has very very nice facilities, excellent coaches and fan base that is happy with the home-spun persona he projects. Just like the state of Alabama, SC does not have a pro sports team and Clemson doesn't have to compete with the pros for in-state attention. You might not want to hear this, but Clemson is much like Tuscaloosa.
Sark has been a HC at two major institutions, was a ball player himself, understands the PR aspect and certainly relates to athletes. He's 46 now and in the prime of his professional life. He's had trouble with booze as a lot of people have, but that is no reason to say he's not the right guy for this job.
As an older guy now, I have the fire but my body is simply not willing and CNS is feeling the same thing. IMO it's starting to show in subtle ways and I suspect he's going to coach at UA a few more years but not more than five.

1. I think CNS has 4- 6 more years in him, before he’s ready to give it up.

2. As of this very moment, I wouldn’t mind Sark being the being the next HC, BUT...

3. As of this moment, I hope the first call we make is to Lane.

Lane still has a LOT of growing up to do before I'd want him as head coach. This past weekend is one example. They look completely unprepared and uninspired after the highs of going toe-to-toe with Bama the week before.

As good as Lane is Sark is at least neck and neck with him. And, Sark seems to be becoming a better OC. I like Sark a lot.

I really hope Sark can be patient and hang around until CNS decides to retire. I hope there really is an agreement in place that he is the HC in waiting. My worst fear is that he bolts for another head coaching gig after this season and takes Bryce Young with him.

I agree. If Sarkisian has his substance abuse problems behind him, and I think he does, I think he'd be a better head coach than about any reasonable prospect, though I have been a Lane Kiffin fan for a long time. Unfortunately I think he will be head coach somewhere next year or soon. If he is successful wherever he goes, then I suppose he'll be a candidate when Coach retires. I suppose there is a possibility he could be offered the "head coach in waiting" gig but that has rarely proven to work (has it ever?) and I don't expect that to happen.

I didn't see your post before my own above, but if Jones keeps playing as well as he has so far, I expect he'll be in the NFL next year and Bryce Young will be the starting qb at Alabama.

The only job I think Sark would leave for is the Texas job. But, I don't know if he wants to take that because of the external issues that plagues it. Plus, I don't know if Texas wants another offensive coach.

I think Sark and Cristobal would be on the short list for the Texas job. And, if Cristobal would get that job I think Oregon would come after Sark.

I would look at Bill O'Brien and Doug Marone if I was Texas. Both are legit coaches.

1. Dabo

2. Sark

Both excellent recruiters, which is key.

Many consider Dabo 1b to Sabans 1a, and over the last 5 years he has won more games and been to more playoffs. He was a walkon to the university and it changed him for life. I would beg and plead past the point we begged and pleaded with Saban before I went the Perkins / Stallings / Dubose route in place of today's Bobby Bowden.

It doesn’t matter who replaces Saban, they will not be as successful and they will not survive.

It will be Ray Perkins version 2.

That said, I think Dabo wants this job.

The program will be in a lot better shape than it was when Perkins took over.
