So, I had to run down to Montgomery this AM to see a client, left the house just before 8 am (from Hoover)
65 was already a little crowded, even that early
Coming back home now, and man I sure feel sorry for the folks going south right now, just south of Alabaster where the road drops from 3 to 2 lanes is damn near a parking lot
One of the bad things about Spring Break....

Gets worse here on the beach next week. Most of Atlanta is on Spring Break next week and throw in Easter weekend. Huge crowds are expected.

Gets worse and worse every year. Last summer is the most crowded I have ever seen it and I've lived down here for 45 years. Just a frickin mad house.

The Friday before whatever week the entire Midwest takes for Spring Break is #2 worst traffic day of the year in Atlanta behind the day before Thanksgiving.

I-65 from Valleydale South is a bad deal the rest of the summer. You better be thru that 10-15 mile stretch before 8 AM each Saturday or you will pay the price.

Kinda glad orange beach closed all of it's public beaches until after spring break. That will drive all the trash to gulf shores and perdido key. Meanwhile we will be at pirates cove.

Condos, yes but the public beaches in orange beach like the large one at Alabama point and the few others on the beach road will be closed until after spring break.

I was just down there and the only beach closed was the east one at Alabama point. Cotton Bayou public assess was open as was Romar Beach. That’s not going to change the dynamic much at all.
ETA: They didn’t even close all of the eastern beach. They only closed the part along the channel. Orange Beach press release clarifying closure.

Yep, and 65 North in that same section is bad on Saturday and Sunday afternoons in the spring and summer.

Most of these bastards flow right through my town. I avoid going into town on the weekend during the day because of it

If not too far out of the way you can go through Columbiana and hit US 145 and come out just above Clanton.

Every weekend all summer. I drive from Greenville to Montgomery for work. Northbound is a parking lot every Sunday, usually between Ft. Deposit and Hope Hull. And it's not due to wrecks.

Try living down here. Forget about using the tunnel in downtown. I don’t understand what is so amazing that you have to slam on brakes and honk your horn like you’ve never heard a horn get really loud.
And the bay way heading to Baldwin county is a mess. Y’all go ahead and take the exit for Baldwin county before you ever drive thru Mobile.

Never understood why people become upset when tax dollars are spent in their cities.

It’s pointless driving between Birmingham and Montgomery on a Saturday during Spring Break and Summer. Saturday is move-in/check out day at the beach so you’ll get one crowd in the morning and then another in the afternoon.
I’ve determined that Tennesseans...particularly Nashvilians....have ruined the beach experience. They clog up our interstates and they’ve overcrowded places like 30A.

Not all spending is good spending. If the cost of supporting the visitors outstrip the economic benefit they bring and/or creates a massive disruption to the area's normal way of life it isn't a good thing.
A very large number of Gulf Shores/Orange Beach business owners WANT the area to discourage the college spring break crowd. My cousin who owns a restaurant that's about a golf tee shot from Alabama Point is one of them. The young spring break crowd comes in, makes messes, causes trouble, and doesn't really spend a lot of money. They're nowhere near as good for business as families with kids.

Most of y'all are Yankees in my book. And everyone else north of Atmore.

I use to think I-65 south through the stretch you're referring to was as bad as it could get when I lived in Hoover years ago until I experienced the Wallace Tunnel (I-10) in Mobile. Moved to the Mobile area over 10 years ago and the tunnel traffic is a nightmare. That stretch of I-65 from the I-65/459 interchange to at least the Alabaster exit is horrible too though
