Next year is gonna be one of the most talented rosters we've ever had. But if Avery is still the coach I expect us to be on the bubble again.

I keep seeing people say this, but I have no idea where y'all are getting that idea from.

I don’t either . I agree our guards should be good and possibly forwards but we will have zero inside game. Hall even though he won’t light it up most nights is still an athletic force in there and Galin/ Reese/ Giddens won’t fill that void IMO. Guess the jury is still out on Fleming

Recency bias. Wimp's teams regularly featured multiple NBA caliber players. I think even Hobbs and Gottfried had a couple of teams that would boat race our current roster.

It won't even be as talented as many of Gottfried's teams.

That, and I think a lot of the people saying it are very young. Some of us old guys forget that there are kids in college that were born in 2001.

Hell, Hobbs had some more talented teams.

Yeah, I edited to include Hobbs and Gottfried. I think Gottfried's laziness towards the end combined with Grant's ineptitude with recruiting re-conditioned a lot of our fanbase's expectations with regards to basketball. Once upon a time we had NBA talent on a regular basis. Guys like Sexton were not once in a decade recruits. We got a player like that every couple of years.

Sexton is I think our third highest draft pick ever and one of five or six Alabama players ever selected in the top 15. So I'd consider him a once in a decade recruit.

Not when regularly we would roll out folks like Hory, Sprewell, and James Robinson, Gerald Wallace, Antonio McDyess, etc. We had some talent.

Not all drafts are equal.

There's a lot of years separating these guys and only McDyess was a top 10 guy like Sexton I think.

We aren't going to win with Sexton level recruits especially not in the one and done era. Our best bet is to get Petty level recruits who actually live up to expectations.

Those are the are the type of guys we've won with historically too.

Sexton was the #3 recruit on 247. Getting players like that has never been the norm here.

If I'm wrong, I guess Wimp dramatically underperformed and was just a good recruiter. I don't think anyone believes that.

I wouldn't say he underperformed, but he had some terrible luck with draws in the NCAA tournament.

If you're regularly getting top 5 recruits, you shouldn't need a good draw.

Wimp wasn't regularly getting top 5 recruits though, so it's a silly discussion. Sexton is one of the best recruits we've ever gotten.

Sexton was one of our best ever recruits. But, that doesn't matter. This team has talent, but isn't going to be "our most talented team ever" next year. I think all of us over the age of 30 can agree on that.

But, what we need to focus on is getting a new coach. Eyes on the prize, gize.

Lost to the eventual champs (North Carolina) by 5 in 1982.
Lost by 5 to #1 seed Kentucky in 1986.
Lost to Providence in 1987, who made the final 4 (coached by Rick Pitino).
Lost to Loyola Marymount by 2 in 1990. Would have had to play eventual champs UNLV in the Elite 8.
Lost to #1 seed Arkansas in 1991.

That's just most of his sweet 16 years.

Lost to North Carolina in 1992.
Lost to South Alabama in 1989, but would have had to play the eventual champs Michigan in round 2.
Lost to Illinois State by 1 in 1984, would have had to play #1 seed DePaul next.
