From a ref of all people. I didn’t even hear it during the actual game but noticed in while watching again. It was after the coin flip in OT which Bama won....the ref didn’t even ask, he said let me guess, y’all want to play defense...player said yes, ref said I kind of figured that!

I didn't find it really funny. Sounded like a ref that knew the camera was on him and he took his chance to get some recognition.

Yea i smiled when he said that too. I do remember seeing one team take offense first. Cant remember the game though.

That ref pissed me off because he did it for the original coin toss too. Let them elect to kick off if they’re dumb enough.

In a championship game in the old AFL, a player (Cookie Gilchrist) won the coin toss in overtime and chose to kickoff, obviously the wrong instruction. His team won the game anyway, and after the game a reporter asked one of his teammates why he'd made the choice and the guy replied, "well Cookie..you know...he kinda hard to think"
True story!

Happened in one of my high school games. My Dad (head coach) told the captain we wanted to kick. They deferred. We said we wanted to kick. They got the ball twice.

I think that was the sequence.

Either way they got the ball twice.
