Coaches rave over new Tide pledge
(BOL | embedded junior highlights)
quote:

Alabama landed three-star running back Kyle Edwards out of Destrehan (La.) on Friday morning over Michigan and Penn State. His head coach and offensive coordinator shared their thoughts on the kind of person and player Edwards is.

“Great player, even better kid,” Destrehan OC Greg Boyne told BOL. “Perfect fit. A lot of what we do here — we know a lot of the guys at Alabama, a lot of the coaches through the years — we kind of have a lot of the same philosophies. Some that go way back 30 years, and some that we’ve gotten from watching them and the way those guys work. He’s the type of kid who appreciates that. He appreciates the discipline, he appreciates doing the little things right. He appreciates the program aspect of Alabama.”

Destrehan head coach Stephen Robicheaux echoed Boyne’s sentiment. “We love Kyle,” Robicheaux said. “Kyle is one of those kids that’s going to outwork everybody. He’s extremely humble. He’s probably one of the nicest kids you’ll ever meet. He’s a natural talent, but he takes it to another level. He’s not about the limelight. If you were going to look up ‘student athlete’ in the dictionary it’d be Kyle Edwards. You can’t say enough good things about him. He’s the reason we coach football. He’s a team player, he gets along with everybody.

This is his fourth year here and I can’t say any negative about Kyle Edwards at all. He comes to work every day and works hard. It was him and John sharing time last year and he never said a word about it. He did what he had to do to help the team. I talked to Coach (Pete) Golding and he said the one thing about Kyle is he’s an Alabama fit. And I agree. He’s that strong, downhill guy, that really does a good job down there at Alabama. I think he’ll be a great fit and do well.”

Boyne anticipates Edwards taking over a leadership role his senior season. “He’s kind of a quiet kid by nature, so we weren’t sure exactly if he was going to be able to do it,” Boyne said. “He’s not a follower at all, but he’s not a vocal kid. He always comes in and does what he’s supposed to do, does a great job in the weight room, trains his butt off to get his body right … and that doesn’t always translate into being a leader. We’ve kind of let it play itself out and he’s done exactly what we thought he could do.”

Not only will Edwards be a guy that the team looks up to to follow, with former five-star back John Emery Jr. off to LSU, the Destrehan offense will lean on the now UA pledge even more so now than last season when he split carries with Emery Jr.

“This year he’s gotta be the feature guy,” Robicheaux said. “We got a guy that’s going to be in the backfield with him that I think is pretty good, and we’ve got (WR) Quincy Brown who’s also a good player. He’s a guy that when you need those tough yards or you need him to break one, he can do both. So he’s definitely going to have the star on top of his head.

"Obviously when you’ve got an Alabama commit, he’s a guy that’s a pretty good player. Hopefully we can rely on him to do big things this year. I think he’s excited about the role. I think he’s humbled about the role. He just does everything well. He does a good job in the classroom, he’d does a great job off the field, everybody loves him. High, high character and a great football player. Great combination.”

High school stars most likely to light it up in 2019 (247Sports | segments)
quote:

Real football is rapidly approaching, but not here quite yet. The NFL is still a few weeks out and college football doesn’t kick off in earnest until next week. High school football, on the other hand, gets going this week.

For many football fans, this time of year is peak fantasy season. Fantasy leagues are being fired back up with drafts taking place between now and kickoff.

With that in mind, we thought it would be fun to take a look at top high school prospects in the 2020 recruiting class who would fare well in a fantasy football format.

RB JASE MCCLELLAN, Aledo, TX

Early in his high school career, some thought McClellan could challenge some of Aledo alum Jonathan Gray’s impressive career marks. While that’s unlikely, no top 2020 running back gets to paydirt more often than McClellan. In 2018, the Oklahoma pledge racked up 2,073 rushing yards and 47 rushing touchdowns in 14 games. The workhorse back has totaled 5,800 rushing yards and 95 touchdowns in the first three years of his high school career.

RB ROYDELL WILLIAMS, Hueytown, AL

The biggest recruit to come out of Hueytown since Jameis Winston, Williams was dominant as a junior, rushing for 2717 yards and 32 touchdowns on 291 carries in 12 games. He also added 3 receiving scores. The Alabama commit’s compact build and strong lower body allows him to easily run through tackles once he gets to the second level.

TE ARIK GILBERT, Marietta, GA

When it comes to finding productive tight ends, this was an easy one. The top-ranked tight end in the 2020 cycle, Gilbert’s numbers are elite for the position, as he had 88 catches for 1,210 yards and 14 touchdowns in 11 games. Even more impressively Gilbert did that while playing top competition and doubling as a defensive end. Marietta plays another tough schedule in 2019, but returns much of its talent including quarterback Harrison Bailey, so don’t be surprised to see Gilbert go off yet again.

TE DREW SANDERS, Denton, TX

Ranked as an athlete, Sanders could potentially play tight end at the next level, though he’s probably more likely to end up on defense. Even then, the Alabama commit is one of the more unique overall high school football players in the class. His production backs that up. In addition to posting over 100 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 8 sacks on defense, Sanders scored 19 touchdowns, three different ways. Lining up as a short yardage quarterback, Sanders threw for 3 TDs and ran for 13 more. He also caught 3 TD passes in his limited time as a receiver.

I was looking back at the 2016 recruiting thread to see what the reaction was when Jacobs committed. It was NSD so it was too busy for anyone to really question it. However it was kind of funny that Ben Davis committed at about the same time and how excited everyone was for that especially after you look at their UA careers up until this point . Go get 'em this year BD!

Started watching at half and all I've seen is Deerfield Beach self destruct. Carol City up 18-0, apparently Jones-Bell got a TD in the 1st half.

ETA: High School refs are something else.

Narbonne-Buchanan
10 p.m. CT on ESPNU

Jersey numbers:
Narbonne
Traeshon Holden -- 5
Jordan Banks -- 9
Buchanan
Kendall Milton -- 2

Doesn't appear Traeshon Holden is going to play tonight while he awaits the CIF ruling him eligible after transferring in this offseason.

Surge, on the roster notes you've added Giles Amos and his awarded scholarship. Have we discussed if it effects recruiting numbers, if it does?
