PSA: Bama's 2nd Champion's Cookout is on Saturday, July 27th.

Since the 1st one was on Friday, June 21st, I had assumed and posted that the 2nd one would be on Friday the 26th. My bad. Sorry.

We need some good luck vibes up in here.

See what four-star Omari Thomas has to say about his top 6 schools (Commercial Appeal)
quote:

Briarcrest (Memphis, TN) lineman Omari Thomas, who will announce his commitment live on NBC at the Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 4, is down to his final six schools – Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Texas A&M.

The 6-foot-5, 299-pound senior said that he plans to take official visits to Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee and Texas A&M. He has yet to decide whether he will use his fifth official visit on Ole Miss or Auburn.

Thomas, a four-star recruit per the 247Sports Composite and ranked the fourth-best player in Tennessee, explained why he picked each of his top six schools in an interview with The Commercial Appeal:

Alabama

Alabama’s winning tradition and success in the NFL Draft stand out to Thomas.

“At Alabama, you go in, work hard and you have that mind-set of wanting to be the best, thinking you can be the best and that you can get to the league,” Thomas said. “Everybody knows it’s kind of a guarantee that if you go to Alabama, do what you need to do, and stay healthy, you can easily get to the league.”

However, he said he is attracted to the idea of helping whichever program he chooses reach an even higher level of success. Alabama, which has won five of the past 10 national championships, doesn’t fit with that particular goal.

“But the way I think – not saying that I wouldn’t consider Alabama, but I think that I want to help a school build a legacy, not necessarily join one,” Thomas said. “Joining one wouldn’t hurt, but it’s a situation that I’d have to look into and see if I fit there and if I’m comfortable there.”

Auburn

For Auburn, Thomas noted he had good relationships with coach Gus Malzahn and offensive line coach J.B. Grimes. “Coach Malzahn is a great dude. Coach Grimes is a great dude,” Thomas said. “Just getting the chance to build a relationship with those guys has been really nice.”

He also said that Auburn is the only school in his top six that is recruiting him as an offensive lineman. The others want him on defense. “Auburn, they talk to me as both. I can see myself being more of an offensive tackle at Auburn,” Thomas said.

Ole Miss

Thomas said Ole Miss has been recruiting him longer than any other school in his top six. He said his interest in the Rebels cooled when former coach Hugh Freeze resigned in 2017, but he formed relationships with the new Ole Miss coaching staff that helped the Rebels regain their competitiveness in his recruitment.

“Things happened at the school. Everyone knows that. And it just kind of chilled out because I didn’t know how I would feel going into that situation,” Thomas said. “But, I just looked at the new coaching staff and how they’re recruiting, and they still recruit based on not letting what happened in the past distract you from what can happen in the future. That’s what they’re selling.”

Tennessee

It appears as if Tennessee is giving Thomas a similar pitch to the one that helped the Vols land Lausanne running back Eric Gray. “They’re the in-state school. You get a good feeling there. It’s comfortable. It’s a program that’s been down a little bit but will be on the rise with the new coaching staff,” Thomas said. “That’s what they’re selling – come here and build this program back to where it used to be. And I like the idea of coming to build a program.”

Texas A&M

Thomas said that he prefers playing defense over offense because of the opportunity to make plays and have his name called. Texas A&M told him he’ll have the opportunity to make those plays as a part of the Aggies’ defense.

“They’ll have me playing as a three technique at ‘D’ tackle. And they told me its not a defense where you’re just locked in against the offensive lineman for the linebackers to make plays; you’re going to make plays, so that’s what I like there,” Thomas said. “And my relationships with the coaching staff are very good, and I just didn’t have any bad vibes there, either.”

Not exactly reassuring.

Bama really likes him and vice versa. But with 4 OLBs already committed and other needs, I don't see how there's room for him in the 2020 class

The guy is an elite talent, and I find it hard to believe they would pass on him if he wanted in, regardless of who else we have. I’d definitely be fine not taking another db or not taking a QB (if we can’t get an elite one) if we could get him. But what do I know, we’ve passed On multiple, elite talents who have balled out elsewhere because of numbers.

Yeah, I suppose if we miss on too many of our other targets and the staff feels like he (Donell Harris) or 1-2 of our 4 OLB commits have good potential to also play ILB, then he might get in.

But what do I know? For as much as I follow recruiting, I get surprised pretty often with us getting commits I wasn't expecting, as well as us missing on guys I thought we'd probably land.

ETA: Clemson and UGA also might not have enough room in their 2020 class for him, given their positional needs priorities. It may be why he added LSU to his top 5 in place of Clemson and is showing increased interest in ATM.

Top targets planning (or likely) to commit soon:

4-star ATH Kristian Story 6-1/206 AL hudl
-- Announcing July 18.

4-star CB Nadab Joseph 6-2/180 Juco hudl
-- Hank recently said he thinks Nadab Joseph or Xavion Alford could pop next.

4-star S/CB Xavion Alford 6-0.5/188 TX hudl
-- "Coach Saban, every time I go up there, he makes it clear that he really wants me... It could be today, tomorrow, a month from now, it could be real soon.”

4-star DL Jaquelin Roy 6-3.5/289 LA hudl
-- Announcing July 26, 7-pm.

5* RB Kendall Milton 6-2/220 CA hudl *
-- Announcing July 29 at 7 pm. It appears he'll commit to UGA.

4-star WR EJ Williams 6-3.5/192 AL hudl *
-- Announcing August 24, his father's birthday. At The Opening Finals on June 30, he said Bama is #1 and Clemson #2. But the concensus among 247 analysts is that he's still trending to Clemson. He camped at Clemson in June and said he plans to attend their "All In" big recruiting event the last weekend in July.

2021 4-star QB Jalen Milroe 6-1.5/194 TX hudl
-- Before 2019 FB season begins. After he camped at UA in June, he tabbed Bama his leader. He's moved up his commit timeframe and was CBd to Bama by by Hank (BOL) and Texas mod Mike Roach on July 12; has no other CBs.

4-star DB/WR Joel Williams 6-1.5/180 LA hudl
-- Announcing September 9.

Top targets who might commit this summer:

5-star RB Zachary Evans 5-11/200 TX hudl
-- Has said he may commit before FB season, but has also said he'll take as long as he needs to be sure of his decision.

4-star ILB Jordan Banks 6-1/228 CA hudl
-- Came to the cookout and camp in June. Bama has been his leader since the June 2018 cookout. Hank said his offer is committable, but also said in his post-visit article that Banks is targeting a late Nov decision. Maybe he'll decide to commit sooner, to avoid Bama running out of room for him.

Joel Williams is going to commit Sept 9 per BOL.

ETA: The summer was the worst last year for the commitment timeline post. Kids would be like "Commitment coming soon!" in June, and we would be hitting the beginning of Sept with not a word from them.

Thanks for the heads up. I updated it.

Yeah, I sure hope that doesn't happen again. It helps to land a few commits in July through September -- keeps the momentum going.

You did a beautiful jib with the timelines list last cycle. You wanna take it on again?

I appreciate the compliment but due to more work and more family responsibilities I have to decline. Hopefully the commits come a little faster than last year and you don't have to do much maintenance, just deleting and gif posting .
