Tider95 it is really that simple! I want to say I’m surprised by some of the folks here but I’m not. The pacification of boys over the last 25 years has really shown in the western societies and these boards are the epitome of today’s society.

College football and College basketball have been the minor league systems for the NFL and NBA since their conception and money has always been paid to players. Coach Bryant was and always be my favorite coach of any sport. He was the greatest, period!

But I’ve sat down with numerous players of his and some have told me stories that just cracked me up about the way money found its way to them and their friends whom went to other programs like Uga and allbarn and one in particular that went to Oklahoma.

It is what it is! Yes, there is still recruiting going on and a program to sell. The highest bidder doesn’t win the signature nearly as often for most of the recruits. However you still must recruit the right players and develop them and get the most out of them!

The story about John David Crow is legendary! #facts!

Down vote all you want to snotty nosed snowflakes.

Are you serious? Why spend money on facilities?Because other programs spend money on facilities etc and because recruiting isn’t only about paying the highest dollar! Wow.

Tider04, do you remember Saban saying during his first on one of his very first speeches to Bama nation. He said among other things, we’ve got to get out boosters in order and on the same page etc.

There is absolutely a system in place in place and at every major program by which things get done and by that I mean...players get signed. Coach Saban isn’t within a million miles of it ...but it’s there and it’s everywhere and it ain’t going anywhere.

I'll answer this question in good faith despite it being a crappy misdirection

You still spend on facilities because, as I pointed out in that quote, you aren't paying every player big money or even consistent money. Having access to great facilities absolutely makes an impact on a recruit and you still need them to want to play at your school. Facilities are maintained and upgraded to keep pace with every other school that also brings extra benefits to the table during recruitment.
Furthermore, the money that goes to players isn't coming out of the Athletic Departments budget. One has nothing to do with the other.

/sigh

Rhetorical question...

Then it's only a matter of time before Alabama gets busted and I hope it happens tomorrow.

Nick Saban isn't paid the money he is to cheat. And if Alabama cheats so much, how do we get outbid on 5 star players by schools like Ole Miss and Auburn?

There is a big difference in paying kids to come to a school and the kind of shite that happens after the fact. If Alabama is paying kids to come to school, I hope we get 100% busted and I'll find another sport to follow.

Nope, I remember Saban doing the opposite. Finally being the coach who reeled in the rogue boosters who were doing shady shite and getting Alabama in trouble.

People like Logan Young can frick off.

Let me see if I understand this right.

The boosters during the Shula years, they were just unorganized and that's the reason we didn't have top recruiting classes and barely made it into the top20 most years.

Like the 2005 class. It had 4 total 4 stars and 21 3 stars. I guess the boosters were just ignorant and went out and paid a bunch of 3 stars with the occasional 4 star.

Or maybe the 2006 class. We got 1 5 star, I guess all the boosters paid that guy and forgot about the others right? 4 4 stars and...20 3 stars.

But suddenly Saban comes to Alabama and gives a speech and suddenly the boosters magically start to bring in 5 stars.

I eagerly await your appeal to cynicism.

Coach Bryant used to say that you couldn't pay players and then expect them to play hard for you. You are now at their mercy.
They know you have done something illegal and hence they hold the leverage in the relationship. Coaches cannot exert omnipotent authority on the players anymore.
Other players notice this and it starts affecting team unity.

I heard or read this several times. Can't remember exactly where. Fans from the 70's and 80's can easily corroborate this.

It makes sense.

I'm sure players get "hook ups" and such and many other benefits that magically come their way as a result of being a player. $100 handshakes I imagine are very common etc. Food/drink bills when out somehow come out to low amounts, etc.

And those type things happen at every single school in the country, I have no doubt.

I'm also pretty sure the agent problem is real, where agents try to gain influence before they go pro.

But straight up paying players to sign with the schools is an entirely different thing. As you say, the leverage they have over an entire school/program is extreme.

Yep. Big difference in players getting fringe benefits after they arrive from fans/runners vs. the school organizing a pay for play deal.

No, I do not believe Saban has authorized a pay for play scheme. And in Saban's world, nothing happens that he doesn't authorize. Guys who are desperate to get to the top pull that junk. Hugh Freeze comes to mind. And Kirby has that Hugh Freeze aroma to him.

Elite OL adds Bama among favorites with commit date approaching BamaOnLine By Hank South
quote:

On Wednesday four-star offensive guard Justin Rogers released a top five that included Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Michigan, and Tennessee, with plans to make a commitment on May 20.

24 hours and a conversation with Nick Saban later, Alabama is now a part of the group as the Oak Park (Mich.) lineman says he now has a top six.

Rogers told BamaOnLine he hoped to take an official visit to Tuscaloosa at some point in the near future, so one could surmise a trip getting penciled in to the Capstone with this recent development.

As of late it's Kentucky that's been trending on the 247Sports Crystal Ball for the 6-foot-2.5, 311-pounder. Several schools are represented beyond that, including the Bulldogs and the Volunteers.

The Tide has one offensive lineman committed in its 2020 class, that being three-star guard Seth McLaughlin.

Rogers is rated the No. 1 guard and the No. 30 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings.

247Sports compares Rogers to New England Patriot Isaiah Wynn:

Thickly-built prospect. Not as tall as some elite-level linemen, but has longer arms and a low center of gravity. Has been a dominant player at the high school level. Explosive, strong, and blocks to the whistle. Great finisher. Also shows his athleticism on defense where he can play in space at his size and has done a good job as a pass-rusher in camps. As an offensive lineman, he has a great base and strong punch in pass protection. Also has the athleticism to mirror. Does not show glaring weaknesses. Future success will come down to continuing to polish all parts of his game and developing from a strength and conditioning standpoint. Can compete very early in college and has high-impact potential. Might be able to play tackle even though he does not have the classic build for that spot. Long-term potential is highest as a guard. (via 247Sports' Allen Trieu)

Apparently he's been increasingly receptive to UK due to the fact they are recruiting him at DT.

How often do you see a 6'2" OT in the league... long arms are not. Not saying he couldn't be a great OT in college, talented OL guys are not just playing to get a free degree, they all want to go to the league...
But, I could be mistaken

I think Rogers seeing a litany of DL go in the top 10 last month is more appealing ATM than Guard.

The last thing I worry about with Bama and Saban is recruiting, but we are missing on some key linebackers that I believe in the past we would have gotten. Dean, from last year, and so far this year Sampah and Sherman. These are out of state guys that we did not miss on with in state programs but missed on with other out of state programs. The question is why? Coaching turnover? Better competition in recruiting? Something to ponder and discuss!!

You are so right; but, just as often there are runs on Oline guys, was it last year that one of the top 10 guys was an OG? seems like from ND. But as they say, you make your money being a QB or hitting the QB. If I were a talented Dline guy who could also play Oline at a high level, I would opt for development at Dline... (unless I was projected as LT)

It's a sell, wouldn't surprise me if he went to UK they start him at DT then flip him to OL. Just like what LSU did to secure Dare Rosenthal.

And yeah, Quentin Nelson went top 10 to Indy. He was billed as one of the best Guard prospects ever, of course Chance Warmack and Jonathan Cooper were talked that way years prior.

Nelson has so far proved it though...

Five-star LB Reggie Grimes knows three of his official visits Woody Wommack • Rivals.com @rivalswoody Pardon the language, not sure if this kid's grammar or the writer's lack of spelling ability? Sounds like he likes hearing the truth, Bama is losing OLB's this year, there may be opps for you... against the other schools "come here, play what you want as early as you want"

quote:

THE LATEST

Class of 2020 five-star linebacker Reggie Grimes has been picking up offers since he was a freshman in high school, and he spent plenty of time enjoying the process as his high school career moved along. But now, with plans to sign in December, Grimes is starting wittle down his options in advance of a fall decision. He recently cut his list to six, with Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Tennessee, South Carolina and Vanderbilt making the cut. Now, Grimes is getting ready to start taking official visits, with the Gamecocks, Vols and Tide taking first priority in terms of scheduling. Rivals.com caught up with Grimes to talk about the three trips as well as his overall recruitment.
IN HIS WORDS

"I'm sticking with my Top Six and I don't on narrowing it down anymore before I make a decision. I know I'm taking two officials this summer, South Carolina and Tennessee and I'll be at Alabama when they play Southern Miss on Sept. 21 because they're honoring my dad's championship team so we're going to all be down there anyway and we're just going to do the official visit then, too. We have those three on the board right now and we don't when we're going to do the other two yet."
SOUTH CAROLINA

"I wanted to make sure I take that official visit because I've been there for a game and I know what that's like and I was there for a little bit last summer but not that much. I just want to get there and really take it in and see what they have to offer. I want to spent a lot of time with the players and have them tell me everything that the coaches aren't telling me. How everything is going to be if I go there, stuff like that."

Their main pitch: "They're telling me that I can play whatever I want to play. I could go in and play early if that's what I want to do."

Last visit: "I was there when they played Tennessee. It's a nice campus, it's beautiful. The new stuff they put up is really nice."
TENNESSEE

"It's pretty much the same thing as South Carolina. They said I can come in and play early and play whatever I want to play for however long I want to play it. They've just been filling me in about if they had me there with some of the pieces they have coming in my class that they could be a good team again."

Pruitt's success of producing defensive talent: "He hasn't compared me to anyone they have or anyone he's coached before. I paid attention to him when he as at Alabama. He's capable of coaching a great defense. At Alabama that's what he did there so he's a capable coach he just needs good players to put in roles in positions to make plays."
ALABAMA

"I want to make a name for myself. What my dad did there was great when he was a player, but he's not the one that has to go to the six o'clock workouts now. That's me. So I have to make my own decision and write my own story. If that's at Alabama, great. If it's not at Alabama, that's great, too."

Their pitch for you to make your own name: "They're losting their two outside linebackers to graduation and likely leaving early so I could go in there and earn playing time early and develop a lot early."

Camp this summer: "No, I'm not camping again. I'm done with that. I'll be at their Cookout of Champions but I think that's in mid-July."
