Marshall was obvious fantasy. Just like Prohm will be.

Prohm is an alum. Sure, he could turn it down. But pursuing an alum is not “obvious fantasy.”

So WTF does it hurt if they say no as long as you aren't a fricking dumbass like Battle and conduct the search completely in the public eye?

Battle got some positive feedback and jumped on a plane with some other Bama guys and flew to Wichita to speak with Marshall about the job, all public knowledge. Marshall and his agent played Battle for the fool he was. IF, back channel communications are very, and I mean VERY encouraging, as in we're coming to work out the contract details, you get on the plane, otherwise, you don't do that. It blew up in his face in a very public way and he grabbed the first guy to come along and express interest in the job in Avery. He could have done much worse, but he could have also done better. He just wanted it over.

Byrne is an experienced AD and won't be so ham-handed. I trust him to make the hire, even if it's a name I don't know or aren't thrilled with. Bohannon is looking OK so far, and Byrne has an impeccable pedigree. Let him work, you might be pleasantly surprised.

The big star target is Eric Musselman. He's making peanuts at Nevada.

Mark Fox was the last home run hire coming from Nevada. Maybe Musselman will be great. Maybe he just has those superstar Martin twins now and will be worse than Mark Fox at a major program without them.

It's Russian roulette hiring these mid-major coaches, especially based on only 3 or so seasons all with the same players.

The chance of getting a Mark Fox or Anthony Grant out of a successful mid-major program seems to be about 100X more likely than getting a coach who does as least well as Avery Johnson.

I've been a fan of Eric since he was an assistant with the Hawks. He believes in fitting an offense around the talent you have. A simple concept that eludes so many coaches. Plus, he's from Ohio and that state produces coaches.

I fear Eric will probably end up at UCLA.

No he won’t. Remember who we have now as our AD.

Then Fred Hoiberg it is.

Either way, this year or next will be a good time to go after a coach of quality. You don't want to look for a coach in a shallow pool.

I still think Avery leaves for a NBA position of some kind after the season

I'm with ya. I don't believe Avery likes coaching in college that much and once his son is gone, he won't be far behind

Avery come on down.

On a side note, I feel bad for Anthony Davis. He needs to go to the Lakers
