I think the 2 biggest problems yesterday were

(1) letting Carolina stay ahead of the chains and

(2) tackling (which was part of #1)

Carolina stayed in manageable down and distance the entire game. To be honest, it was impressive how poised and committed to the gameplan their freshman and OC were. They never got antsy and tried to take shots. They just kept dinking and dunking and staying in 2nd and 6 and 3rd and 4 and Helinski was very consistent in his decisions and throws.

Because we apparently didn't trust our guys to do exotic blitz stuff there really wasn't an answer for that, because even if the pass rush is lethal it's hard to get to a QB when they are throwing quick slants/swings. And it seems like Saban was reluctantly ok with that trade off of making them dink and dink down the field and take our chances inside the 20 with the way our offense was playing.

The biggest takeaway for me is what we've known since Moses went down - we have to get the freshman ILB up to speed before A&M and have a more advanced version of our playbook available. They have 3 weeks and 2 games to keep tinkering and improving, but I don't think the vanilla option will work for much longer. I'm sure they know that too.

I hope we see some aggressive blitzes and calls Saturday against USM to see how the kids react.

I have a feeling that Kaho will be more involved going forward.

#8 and #35 weren't exactly Ray Lewis.

Kaho was more confused than the freshman LBers

I think you 100% on point and tackling allowed to many extra 3 yards on the end of catches.
I think the biggest play in the game was 5 & 9 miss playing the TD passed the squeezed between them.
But as Ive said it was maybe good getting our young ones initiated to SEC road game.
It will come in handy by A&M.I will say I was disappointed in # 5 Carter's play as a whole.
I would not be to hard on the defense as anytime you have a TE as a weapon combined with big WR's your gonna give up plays.
Especially when you combined the youth of our LB'ers and 15 could not be everywhere.
It was like playing Ole mis with there TE & big 3 WR's.2 yrs ago or maybe that was jalen freshmen yr.

Could it be that South Carolina is a little bit better than people are giving them credit for ? They beat UNC with Hellinski at QB and Coach Boom stated before the season that this was his most talented team in his tenure.

Yes sir. It reminded me of how State sustained long drives against us in 2017 except Carolina did it through the air. Both teams converted way too many third downs against us. I am happy to have won impressively imo on the road so I won't bitch too much about the defense right now. This team is fun to watch.

The good thing is, the problems are correctable and coachable. Our team needed that experience yesterday before they go to Texas A&M.

I think it was Diggs yelling at Kaho on multiple occasions on who he was supposed to be covering.

That's a really good comparison

Carolina will finish second in the East this year assuming that they beat Missouri this week. They're better than Tennessee and Florida IMO. Probably Kentucky as well.

The biggest problem is see with the pass rush is that we always have 3 or 4 on the line. Most of our blitzes are delayed because they come from a corner or LB off the line. Therefore, when their offense uses quick hitters, we dont have the chance to get pressure. Also, our DL are taught to occupy the blockers to allow the LBs to get to the ball carrier.

I would love us to consider a change to the entire defensive scheme. We've done it on the offensive side of the ball, but have used the same defense since Saban got here. Any team with a QB with a pulse is going to get alot against us. Teams are going to continue to use the Clemson gameplan to attack us. If we can't get more QB pressure from the DL position, we are going to struggle.

That's a big if re: Missouri, and I'm certainly not going to say they are better than Florida.

They could go anywhere between 5-7 and 7-5 probably. They still have Missouri, Kentucky, Florida, Georgia, Texas A&M and Clemson left.

They have to go 3-3 in those games just to get to 7-5.

Florida is not impressive to me. They should've lost to Kentucky last night. Their OL is a huge question mark. Missouri is a tricky game. Georgia is a loss. Texas A&M is a toss up. Clemson is a loss. I think that they have a solid team but their record could go in a number of ways. Their schedule is brutal. But Hellinski is a very good QB. Better than Bentley.

Our D played like trash at times but you have to give Hellinski credit. He made some difficult throws, sometimes fading backwards to avoid the rush and delivering dimes 20 yards downfield. What concerned me was the run defense! Did we get winded or were there missed assignments

Hellinski was one of the highest rated quarterbacks in the last recruiting cycle. He's talented.

According to Saban it was both.

Exactly. South Carolina consistently stole 3-4 yards at the end of every play. Our guys rarely pushed them back while tackling, even when they managed to bring them down, they almost always managed to fall forward a few more yards.

The prime example is the almost-touchdown where their RB managed to squirt forward at the last second to the goal line. That close to your own endzone, you need to be focused on knocking guys backward. I'm still not sure he didn't score but that's on Boom for not calling a time out it challenging it.

I'm worried the lack of blitzes and weak rushes are a product of Golding more than anything.

Because we didn't do that vs Clemson either. And then here we are in another season and it appears we have a DC that doesn't know when or why to blitz.

Anytime I see a 3 man rush I just roll my eyes.
