I thought we used to run a 3-4, but now seems like only 2 linebackers in nickel or 4-2-5.

By no means am I an expert, but I would simplify things by running a more attacking style. So many times they are out of position especially on 3rd down & long.

I think we are in still a 3-3-5 a lot given the offenses we are playing. We just have one of our lb's on the line.

That's also assuming they can get lined up before the ball is snapped

We opened in a 2/4/5 nickle and later shifted to a 3/3/5 nickle since Ole Miss was gashing us at the LoS.

I have been playing with who should we open with against UGA and Battle sitting the first half is killing all of the options I wanted.

Front: Mathis / Barmore / Young
LBs: Anderson / Moses / Harris
Corners: Jobe / Moore / Surtain
Safety: Wright (1st half) / Hellams

I really hate the thought of Wright in there but not sure if Turnage or Smith could do any better at this point. Wright running the back end scares me.

In theory we run a 3-4, but in practice we are in dime almost all the time now which looks like a 4-2-5 when you look on the field. Whatever we are running ain’t working.

I don't think Alabama has run a base 3-4 in like 6 years. Thought they moved to a base nickel. I also don't know shite.

This seems the prevailing thought among "experts," as well. Youth in the back half and experience playing together limited with no Spring and atypical fall developmental reps has them trying to figure out an NFL level defensive scheme in live game action.

As a result, lots of busted coverage, lack of communication, and break downs.

Bama has the talent to simplify and let players just play. They will improve, but are lost in the sauce vs a smart OC that schemes to attack that weakness and create/exploit Bamas confusion

The Golding Cover 0. It's a revolutionary defensive scheme where you don't cover anyone and the linebackers blitz like Mark Sanchez trying to scramble. Straight into a lineman's arse.

3-4 is still technically our base, but no one runs an offense that you can play a 3-4 against anymore. That only works against offensive sets of 2WRs or less.

Everyone is putting 3/4WRs out there now, so it's predominantly nickel (3-3-5 or 2-4-5) and Dime (3-2-6 or 2-3-6).

A lot of the time Nickle/Dime looks like a 4 man front because our rush ends are technically linebackers (Allen/Anderson), but they have their hands in the dirt.

I just watched some first half highlights, and there were two glaringly obvious things:

1. LBs and safeties consistently read run, when it was a pass, leaving folks running wide open. No discipline or intuition at all.

2. Missed tackles at the line of scrimmage.

I thought Lane was, not surprisingly, pretty clever in his play calling early.

Right off the bat basically everything involved either a handoff or play action. And the QB was good at really selling the play fakes. Our middle linebackers had no idea what was going on from the first series.

And he basically set up the run with the pass. The first series was all play fakes, and then eventually he started running the ball off of that.

It's not just the linebackers though. We used to have an immovable defensive line that could handle some dive plays basically on their own. Not anymore, obviously.
