But Mac Jones might be the best returning starter in the SEC....
Posted on 1/8/20 at 1:26 pm to FairhopeTider
Might?
I think he's the clear cut #1 returning starter. It's going to be a down year in the conference at QB after a few years of elite play. Kyle Trask could legitimately be the second best QB in the conference. Well, 3rd behind Mac and Bryce :)

Trask or Mac is the best.
After that...Mond? Hilinski? Terry Wilson?

I'd probably say Trask and Mac with Mond right behind them.
I swear, if Jimbo would let Mond run more that offense would be much better. That guy is a dynamic runner.

I mean Brennan might very well end up being good. He's going to have a bunch of studs to throw it to and will be running a quality offense.
I'd say odds are he will be pretty good.

UGA is going to come into Tuscaloosa with either Stetson Bennett, a transfer (Newman from Wake), Carson Beck or Mathis.
Yikes.
Why would any receiver go there?
Kirby might be looking at 3 regular season losses.

Alabama will and should be favored in every game.
UGA was the only game that scared me, but they are losing their entire o-line and Fromm.

My sincere hope for Kirby and UGA is a 2-3 loss regular season in 2020 which sends Merlins and Go Gator to Atlanta, followed by a down-ish year in recruiting (like the #12 class or something), and then another 2-3 loss season in 2021 where they don't make it to Atlanta again and reel in the #14 recruiting class, then an 8-4 season capped off by an inexplicable loss to FCS caliber Georgia Tech and another not top 10 recruiting class. Then halfway through the 2023 season they realize they haven't been nationally relevant since losing the 2018 SECCG, the talent level of the roster isn't bad by any means but is noticeably lower than it was from 2017-2021, and Kirby is in fact nothing more than a scumbag version of Mark Richt. Oh the schadenfreude I would feel.

I really don’t get this Mac Jones hype.
The personnel on the offense will never be better than it was this season, and Mac Jones lost to Auburn with his 2 pick sixes, and had us pretty nervous throughout the Michigan game against Shea Patterson.
I think it’s even likely that it ends up coming down to Bryce vs. Taulia for the starting job
Mac isn’t the guy

Mac could very well be the guy. But I think Bryce will push him to the point where he gets better or loses the job either later this upcoming season or in spring the next year.

Do people really believe that Mac Jones is a clearly better QB than Bryce Young and Taulia, or do they just think that Saban will go with experience, so they’re trying to talk Mac Jones up?

What I don't get is the Taulia hype, especially in comparison to Mac. Mac basically made 1 awful decision in 3 games against Arkansas, Auburn and Michigan. Outside of that he put up numbers that would dwarf basically any QB we've had outside of Tua. Taulia was a mid-level 4 star QB, ranked #180 by 247. He hasn't done anything spectacular in the games he has been. If his name was Sammy Stewart he would just be another QB on the roster who could develop in a few years like Mac has.
I think Bryce Young clearly has a higher ceiling than Mac, but I also think he'll be a true freshman and that only a handful of true freshman are true gamechangers at QB. And if Mac Jones throws out a consistent 26/33 for 330 yards, 3 TD and 0-1 INT (which were basically his averages for 2019 - against P5 teams) that Mac Jones is probably going to be the guy in 2020.

26/33 due to so many passes behind the LOS.
He’s like Jalen Hurts without the mobility.
I don’t think Taulia is some world-beater, but he has a really quick, sharp delivery, and has great mobility as well.
We haven’t seen enough from Taulia to really know anything at this point, but he definitely has a better delivery than Mac Jones, and is really accurate throwing on the run.
At the end of this spring, Taulia will have a lot of experience, and have good knowledge of the offense. There’s no reason to think he won’t be right in the mix, and given his running ability, that gives him something that Mac Jones doesn’t have.
I think that Bryce Young is going to walk in and blow them both out of the water, however. I think he’s one of those freshman gamechangers at QB, or maybe it’s just wishful thinking, because we need him to be if we’re going to make a national championship run.
At the end of the day we need a QB that can outduel Justin Fields and Trevor Lawrence. If Bryce Young has a higher ceiling, then he needs to start, so that come playoff time we have a snowball’s chance in hell.

I'm somewhere in the middle of you and uofarolltide
I think that Mac, and Taulia are both good, and we can win with both. I'm not sure which one is better because we haven't seen enough of Taulia. His numbers in garbage time have been good, and they don't lead me to believe that he isn't good. Some of the throws that he made in last year's A-day game were next level, and make me believe that his arm is definitely up to snuff. He can absolutely get it into the hands of our playmakers.
But outside of the two pick sixes, Mac has been damn good. And I think that the resilience that Mac showed after those mistakes says a lot about him as a person, and player.
And the players like him. He seems to have the characteristics of someone who can lead the team to greatness. I think that Mac is the clear favorite as starter next year.
And then there is Young, who seems like a player that could be elite. He seems to be a "can't miss" guy. However, you just never know how someone will translate to the next level, or how long it might take.
Not everyone is a Tua, or a Jalen(I mention Jalen because he was physically ready to play sec ball as a true freshman, and won SEC player of the year as a true freshman.) That's what we've had for the past 4 years. And then you have guys like Lawrence and Fromm who've been really good as true freshman.
It's become normal at this point, but in reality, it's not normal. I say all of that because putting massive expectations on a true freshman leads to disappointment more often than not.
I think that most will agree that we'll be fine with any of the 3 players that are currently on the roster, which is kind of an incredible thing tbh.

I really think Mac is the starter against USC next season based purely on game experience and Saban’s track record in that department. How long he hangs onto the job is completely up in the air IMHO. I have no answers or even guesses as to how that plays out. I think A-day will give us a decent idea of how close the competition is between Taulia and Mac. It will also show whether Bryce is in the competition or a year away.

assuming he's as good as advertised, my primary reservation with Young is that he needs to put on some weight and muscle. Maybe he'll get in the gym often this spring and summer.
Posted on 1/8/20 at 6:44 pm to FairhopeTider
Mac has the chance to be at least a good as AJ was in his first year starting, especially getting most of the spring and fall reps and summer work with his guys. I’ll take that.
