He came in with such promise, but in two years has been nothing short of a massive disappointment. Our LB play has be horrid under his leadership, even last year when we had Moses and Wilson manning the middle. Does Saban give him one more year to turn it around or is it time to get get an experienced DC (maybe Steele at AU) or someone like that?

Unless we can get a bona fide , 100% guarantee improvement, I'm tired of the coaching changes.
Look at Clemson, IMO, one of the main reasons they are good I'd the stability at coaching

I hear you on that, but they stick with assistants like Venables who are elite. Not projects from small schools who can't seem to establish themselves at the highest level like Golding.

What happens at Clemson can't happen at Bama. Guys are at Clemson because of the lighter workload. That's not happening in the SEC and won't happen under Saban. I'm 50/50 with Golden right now.

Was fired from Oklahoma, gave up like 70pts to WVU or some team like that before becoming "elite".

He seems to be a solid recruiter, so I would say demote him to a position coach, but the problem is that his position (ILB) has been the worst unit on the field both years he's been coaching, which is not a good sign for him.

He won't have a choice. I don't think anyone is going to be knocking down his door after this year.

I kind of doubt it given that it sounds like Saban has eliminating staff turnover at the top of his mind. But I think this is one situation where turnover would be a good thing.

People also forget Venables has a kid playing for Clemson. Why leave a place with a lighter workload with your child who is a starter in your defense?

Wasn't that Steele? Still supports your overall point though.

I remember hearing before this season that Saban kicked the tires on Aranda and Jimmy Lake at Washington. That tells me that Saban isn't so married to the idea of keeping a DC as some believe. Also, there's Charles Kelly and Sunseri on the defensive staff and both of those guys are veteran coaches who can maintain continuity if a new DC is brought in.

He will have options whether you want to believe it or not in this hypothetical situation

With roughly the same pay, and competing at the same highest level.

While I think Venables is the best DC around currently and he's elite now, he wasn't elite when he went to Clemson. His defenses at Oklahoma were from below average to pretty good; but they were susceptible to big plays, particularly in the passing game. OU's passing defense ranked 48th, 53rd, 41st, 59th, 99th, 20th, 51st and 79th in Venables' eight seasons. A Bama DC wouldn't last that long with seasons like that; to put it in context, right now Bama is ranked around 38th in pass defense which is better than all but one of Venables' seasons in his time at OU...

Just like players, coaches have to develop as well and Golding is a young dude. In his first real season as DC, Golding was dealt a difficult hand with our defense; both starting MLBs out for the season without playing a snap, LaBryan Ray out early and for the rest of the season, and up to 5 true freshmen starters at the same time, and, I think, they've had up to 6 true freshmen starting at one time or another this season. Name another time when that's ever happened at Bama? As good as Kirby Smart and Jeremy Pruitt were at Bama, how many true freshman started for any of their defenses?

i think the biggest issue with pg is, he had never coached ilb'ers before coming to bama. also, he may be a guy that has all the head knowledge about defense you could want. he just cant seem to translate it to a winning product on the field. it happens
