No;but I'm not sure he would come.

Clemson is his baby. He's built that program.

I think he'll retire there.

It's a no brainer hire. We had the same leather helmet crowd when we passed on Bobby Bowden and hired a string of Bear disciples trying to recreate someone who couldn't be recreated. I appreciated 1992 but hope we don't make the same mistake in the years ahead.

Amen!

Bama never passed on Bowden.

I think it's the other way around. The "Muh Bama Family" folks are the reason why we ended up with Perkins, Stallings (lucky there), and Mike Dubose.

Gaylon McCollough, a former player under Bryant, acted as a liaison between the candidates for the Alabama job and the committee. McCollough, following Perkins suggestion, recommended Georgia Tech's Bill Curry for the job and also reached out to Bowden. McCollough later claimed the invitation was for an interview only. Bowden clearly thought otherwise.

When Bowden entered the third-floor conference room of Birmingham's Medical Towers building (which housed the UA System Chancellor's office) he was surprised to see more than a dozen people there. It was an interview. And, for more than an hour, the group questioned Bowden about his process and goals. Then, when the questions ended, Thomas told Bowden, "Thank you for coming, Bobby." There was no job offer.

"I left," Bowden later wrote. "And the the only thing I could think was, They didn't offer me the dadgum job!"

Bowden said Thomas called him a few hours after he returned to Tallahassee that night to tell him that Alabama had decided to hire Bill Curry." That came as a surprise to quite a few folks in Tuscaloosa where the perception on the Alabama side was that Bowden's hiring was a done deal.

Rollbamaroll

They most certainly passed on Bowden. It was stupid and pissed me off, even though I was a kid

Bowden didn't get the job because Bill Curry was one of Bryant's recommended interviewees.

Bryant had a list of recommendations (to interview, not necessarily to hire) and Curry, Perkins and Stallings was on it. Stallings got an interview after Perkins left but the Cowboys were in a playoff hunt and Bama's brass wanted to move faster than he did.

Bryant was always impressed with Curry, despite him not being a Bama guy.

Read this and pay attention to Joab Thomas' comments. Gaylon McCullough (who was on the search committee) confirmed Bryant recommend him in one of his books.

Bowden was a remarkable coach. He took his team on the road anywhere and anytime and demolished opponents in the annual Orange bowl. Tom Osborn has vivid memories of those confrontations.

That's the thing about coaching searches, any BOT and AD can royally screw it up more often than they get it right. Bama could write a book on the subject. Bill Curry beat coach Bryant. That was about the only thing on his resume that recommended him for the job.

Mal Moore/BOT was a bust in selecting head coaches. RichRod was going belly-up as soon as he stepped on campus and that would have ended up on Mal's final watch as AD. Instead, RichRod gets cold feet and the perfect storm arrived in his lap. The most redeemable part of Mal Moore's football judgement was his humility and stubbornness not to let Nick Saban get off the hook this time.

Talk about an unlikely comeback and hiring miracle. I dread the next coaching hire at Alabama. Hitting the lotto is hard.

I lost respect for Bowden when he asked if the fans wanted him to win with thugs or lose with 'a bunch of Boy Scouts on the field'.

And don't forget Bowden's general inability to put hardware in the trophy case. He said of other NC coaches:

"I'm the guy who made all these other national champions possible. I made Fulmer a national champion. I made Spurrier a national champion. I made everybody one."

Is that the coach you're pining for? Not me.

Did you forget who you were comparing him against?
