2019 Polynesian Bowl primer
(247Sports | embedded video)

quote:

The 2019 Polynesian Bowl kicks off Saturday, Jan. 19, at 12 a.m. ET/7 p.m. HST on CBS Sports Network.

In its third rendition, the game will pit several of the best high school recruits in the country against each other — Team Mauka vs. Team Makai — inside Honolulu’s Aloha Stadium.

247Sports will be on the ground from the Aloha State all week, from registration and check-in, to each practice all the way through the game Saturday night under the lights.

We’ll have plenty of interviews, top performer lists, video highlights and more from the island.

Before then, here’s a quick primer:

WHO'S PLAYING IN THE GAME?

Forty-one players in the 247Sports Composite rankings are on the roster, including 15 of the top 100 prospects.

Included in that mix are Composite five-stars Trey Sanders, a running back who signed with Alabama, and Ishmael Sopsher, a defensive lineman from Louisiana who has yet to come off the board.

In addition, quarterback Gunner Cruz (Washington State), linebacker Orin Patu (California), kicker Evan Davis (Toledo) and offensive lineman Julius Buelow (Washington) have received waivers to play in the game despite already having enrolled in college. Alabama signee Taulia Tagovailoa and LSU signee Siaki Ika are set to enroll at their respective schools after returning home from the game.

On Monday night following player check-in, a draft party will be held that will split the two teams, Team Mauka (Mountain) and Team Makai (Ocean).

Mike Bellotti, the winningest football coach in Oregon history and a College Football Hall of Fame inductee, will serve as head coach for Team Makai.

Team Mauka will be coached by Jim Zorn, who résumé includes 12 years as an NFL quarterback and 16 years as an NFL coach.

Haloti Ngata (Philadelphia Eagles) and Juju Smith-Schuster (Pittsburgh Steelers) will serve as the game's honorary captains.

Full roster for the 2019 Polynesian Bowl

Also on the roster: DeMarcco Hellams, Khris Bogle, Henry To'oto'o and Daniel Heimuli.

WHO'S COMMITTING DURING THE GAME?

Kahuku (Hawaii) four-star offensive lineman Enokk Vimahi is scheduled to choose between Notre Dame, Oklahoma and USC. He takes an official visit this weekend to Norman to get his first up-close look at the Sooners. The 247Sports Crystal Ball favors the Trojans.

Gilbert (Ariz.) Williams Field four-star defensive back Noa Pola-Gates has a final three of Arizona State, Nebraska and USC, and took official visits to each of those programs prior to the early signing period. The Cornhuskers have been trending in the Crystal Ball and currently half of the 16 total votes.

McDonough School (Md.) four-star defensive tackle D'Von Ellies is also set to reveal his choice live during the game, with Penn State and USC believed to be the top two. The Nittany Lions hold all 13 votes in the Crystal Ball.

Lehi (Utah) Skyridge three-star lineman Logan Sagapolu, the top-rated center prospect in the West region, will announce between a top three of BYU, Oregon and Utah. The Ducks have been the perceived favorite for a couple months.

Kamehameha (Hawaii) three-star offensive lineman Lokahi Pauole is also expected to announce his commitment, while there is a chance that Carlsbad, Calif., four-star athlete Asa Turner also makes an announcement between a final two of Notre Dame and Washington.

WHAT ARE THE BIG RECRUITING STORYLINES?

With the Early Signing Period, there are a number of players who not only committed early, but already signed. Washington leads the way with the most commits/signees in the game, with nine, including Hawaiian natives Faatui Tuitele and Julius Buelow. Oregon and Stanford each hold seven commits/signees, Alabama and USC have five, LSU has four, and Oklahoma, Utah and Washington State each have three.

There are several un-committed prospects that figure to be busy in the coming weeks leading up to the traditional signing day in February.

Aside from the aforementioned Sopsher, Vimahi and Pola-Gates, four-star linebackers Henry To'oto'o and Daniel Heimuli are two other players in the 247Sports Composite rankings that have yet to reveal a college decision.

Rival Views: Who should finish as the No. 1 offensive tackle?

quote:

Darnell Wright and Evan Neal, the top two offensive tackles in the Rivals100, were on the same team at the Under Armour All-America Game and it gave everybody an excellent chance to compare the two elite prospects. Who should be the No. 1 offensive tackle in the final 2019 rankings? Rivals.com experts Adam Friedman and Rob Cassidy debate the subject here.

ADAM'S VIEW: DARNELL WRIGHT

At 6-foot-6 and more than 300-pounds, Wright has the perfect frame to be an elite offensive lineman at the next level. He has exceptional athletic gifts for a player that size and the aggressiveness he plays with is just outstanding. Wright has a couple technical issues to fix before becoming a regular contributor in college but those issues won't take long to overcome. Like most offensive linemen, Wright will need to shed bad weight but the strength and conditioning staff at the school he chooses shouldn't have a problem making that happen quickly. Wright is one of the very few offensive linemen in this recruiting class that could see playing time his freshman year. Tennessee is the favorite to land his commitment but programs like North Carolina, West Virginia and Georgia have a chance.

ROB'S VIEW: EVAN NEAL

Prospects built like Evan Neal don’t come around often. The five-star tackle is all of 6-foot-7 and carries much less bad weight than the other options at the position. He will slim down further once he arrives in Alabama’s conditioning program and has legit first-round potential. Neal moves incredibly well for a man of his size, making him seem like a can’t-miss prospect. Unless something goes horribly wrong, Neal has a pro future. The upside is just too massive to ignore in this case. And, if we’re being totally honest, I’m not sure any other tackle in this class is even in the same league as the IMG Academy star.

Report: Former Alabama assistant rumored to be returning to Crimson Tide

The Alabama Crimson Tide have lost a lot of assistants this offseason, but it appears that could be turning around soon.

One familiar face is reportedly coming back to Tuscaloosa — former OC Steve Sarkisian.

Per a tweet from ESPN’s Dianna Russini, Sarkisian turned down a chance to run the Arizona Cardinals’ offense and will instead return to Tuscaloosa:

Sark has served as the Atlanta Falcons’ offensive coordinator the past couple of years, but he was let go following this season.

Nothing is official yet, of course, but it appears the Crimson Tide may have found their newest offensive coordinator to replace Mike Locksley.

Maybe.

Projected 2019 Roster (85-man) * = redshirt

Safety (7)
SR: Jared Mayden
JR: Xavier McKinney
SO: Daniel Wright*, Kyriq McDonald*, Eddie Smith
FR: DeMarcco Hellams, Brandon Turnage

Cornerback (10?)
SR: Trevon Diggs, Shyheim Carter
JR: Nigel Knott*
SO: Patrick Surtain, Josh Jobe
FR: Jalyn Armour-Davis*, Jordan Battle, Jeffery Carter, Marcus Banks, Christian Williams?

Thompson and Smith leaving doesn't appear to create a pressing need to take a 6th DB. Battle and Turnage are pretty versatile DBs, and some WRs can move to DB if needed.

Only 5 spots left; priorities have appeared to be:

1) RB - Robinson or Glass
2) DL - Young
3) LB - Bogle
4) LB - To'oto'o
5) DL - Sopsher, Pickering, Fuller or TE, DB, WR

But with Raekwon Davis staying, DL may not be as big of a priority for the 5th spot.

Daphne defensive back Christian Williams still ‘locked in on Bama’ (al.com)

quote:

Though he opted not to sign during the early period last month, Daphne four-star defensive back Christian Williams told AL.com on Friday night he was still “locked in on Bama.”

The 6-foot-1, 182-pound All-State defensive back committed to the Crimson Tide last spring, but his decision not to sign in December coupled with Alabama having already signed several national DBs in this class has raised questions about his future.

“I’m still committed to Alabama,” Williams said again Friday night following Daphne’s 67-64 basketball victory over rival Spanish Fort. “I still plan to go in there and compete as hard as I can.”

Williams has drawn increased interest from multiple schools across the country following his participation in both the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game and the Under Armour All-American Game.

Football coaches from LSU, Miami, Kansas and Oregon were at the Daphne basketball game on Friday night. Williams has changed his visit schedule several times. He said the only officials he has set right now are Alabama on Jan. 25 and Oregon on Jan. 31.

“Honestly, I’m just trying to get out and see things, take it smooth,” he said. “I’m trying not to stress about it. I’ve just been praying about it and talking to my parents.”

Williams has been to a pair of LSU games. He said Oregon and Miami only have recently joined the recruiting process.

“Oregon was talking to me in the beginning, then when I committed they kind of backed off a little bit,” he said. “After I didn’t sign, they got back on me and started talking again. Miami just came around recently after they hired the new coach (Manny Diaz). I don’t know a lot about them just yet.”

Williams made 52 solo tackles for Daphne this year and had eight interceptions. He also ran four kickoffs back four touchdowns and caught 22 passes for 340 yards.

He is one of three high-profile Coastal Alabama recruits who have been committed to SEC schools but did not sign in the early period. The others are Spanish Fort DB D.J. James (Mississippi State) and McGill-Toolen DT LeDarrius Cox (Tennessee). James is visiting Nebraska this weekend. Cox is in Knoxville.

National Signing Day is Feb. 6.
