2019 Polynesian Bowl top performers

quote:

HONOLULU – Thanks to a dominant first half, Team Makai walked away with a 27-7 victory against Team Mauka on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.

Led by USC commit Puka Nacua's terrific first-half performance, Team Makai pulled away and never relented and used an efficient rushing attack in the second half to preserve its advantage in the game's third rendition. The matchup included several standout performances:

TEAM MAKAI - TOP FIVE

QB Jacob Conover -- The BYU bound quarterback was accurate on his throws and looked composed in the pocket. He placed the ball perfectly on the touchdown to Nacua, giving him a chance to come down with the catch. Conover will embark on a two-year church mission this summer.

LB Khris Bogle - The Alabama bound linebacker had a handful of tackles and displayed his ability to chase down ball carriers in the flats. Bogle was tremendous all weeks and just oozes upside given his length and motor off the edge.

DB Asa Turner - One of the top unsigned prospects in the country, Turner had an interception in the first half and later read a long heave to swat away the ball in the end zone. The four-star athlete can play either linebacker or safety in college and is still deciding between Washington, where he was committed for months, and Notre Dame.

LB Marcel Brooks - After playing receiver all week, the LSU signee demonstrated his two-way ability at outside linebacker. On one play in the second half, Brooks pressured Alabama-bound quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa and forced an errant throw.

WR Tamatoa Falatea - The No. 1-rated receiver in the state of Hawaii for the 2019 class, Falatea hasn't received much recruiting attention but showed that he deserves a closer look. Falatea had a handful of receptions, including a touchdown in the first half. He took a visit to Princeton last weekend. Falatea's teammate at Punahou School, Notre Dame signee Marist Liufau, just narrowly missed the cut but continued to open eyes.

TEAM MAUKA - TOP FIVE

LB Daniel Heimuli - One of the top un-committed players in the country, Heimuli was all over the field, clogged the middle on run plays and showed off his aggressiveness throughout. He had 3 1/2 tackles for a loss, including a sack, and displayed his immense potential as a linebacker that can do everything and do it well, earning defensive MVP honors. The four-star has visits lined up with Washington and Alabama the next two weekends.

LB Laiatu Latu - The Washington signee led his side in tackles, showing his ability to wrap up and chase the ball from the back side. He's incredibly nimble for his size and changes directions very well, making him a versatile defender that can drop back when he has to but also dangerous as a rusher off the edge.

DB Kaulana Makaula - The rangy prospect, who is rated No. 1 among defensive backs in the state of Hawaii in this class, had a big interception in the first half and then broke up another long pass. He was terrific in coverage and made things difficult for receivers given his size.

WR Lincoln Victor - Despite a muffed punt, Victor made some plays on the night and had the lone touchdown for his team. He is an intriguing route runner that finds open space and can cut on a dime once he has possession. Victor will visit Hawaii next weekend.

WR Milton Wright - The Purdue signee had a team-high 63 receiving yards and capped his great week with another standout showing. Long and fluid, Wright is a tough cover for even the bigger defensive backs and he's a reliable pass-catcher in traffic. The Boilermakers are getting a player that figures to contribute from the beginning.

Y'all send some thoughts this way. Tornado ripped through our neighborhood in wetumpka earlier. Downtown completely destroyed. Missed our house by a couple of blocks. I dont think there was any fatalities.

Who downvotes something like this? Seriously, someone needs their arse taken out behind the woodshed. I wish we could find out who the serial down voter is and ban them. This is beyond poor taste.

Taulia Tagovailoa not just settling into backup role at Alabama (BOL | embedded video)

quote:

Taulia Tagovailoa returned to Hawaii this week to take part in the Polynesian Bowl, the last game of his decorated high school career.

Throughout the week, the Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson standout spent time with his family, friends and his fellow Alabama commits and signees before he heads off to Tuscaloosa to enroll.

“It feels good,” Tagovailoa told 247Sports’ Brandon Huffman about being in Hawaii earlier this week. “I’ve seen a lot of my family here. It feels good to play in front of my family again. I’m going to do my best.”

It’s come full circle for Tagovailoa in terms of his high school career finishing out at Aloha Stadium. Originally the star quarterback for Kapolei High School in Honolulu, the 4-star signal caller transferred to Thompson ahead of his junior season as the Tagovailoa family moved to stateside to be near Tua once he arrived at the Capstone.

It was extra special for Tagovailoa not only to see his family and friends, but to show his future teammates what the Hawaiian lifestyle is all about.

“I gotta show my Eastside boys how it is on the Islands,” Tagovailoa said of guys like Trey Sanders and Khris Bogle. “They’re from Florida, but I told them it’s nothing like Hawaii.”

One of Sanders’ goals during the week outside of football was to keep Khris Bogle committed and feeling good about the Tide. Bouncing off of what Sanders said about their recruiting pitch, Tagovailoa doesn’t feel like there’s really much recruiting to be done.

“Like Trey said, I feel like the program speaks for itself,” Tagovailoa said. “There’s a lot of guys that left to go to the Draft. If those guys can do it in three or four years, I’m pretty sure all of us can do it. That speaks volumes. I think Khris is staying.”

It’s been well-documented the changes occurring at Alabama. Most notably for Tagovailoa being expected offensive coordinator Dan Enos leaving for Miami. Former Alabama assistant Steve Sarkisian is expected to take over the posting at the Capstone.

“I’ve just heard stuff about it on social media,” Tagovailoa said of the expected hire of Sarkisian. “I know Coach (Nick) Saban is always going to make the right decision for what’s best for the team. Whatever it happens, it’s for the best interest of the team.”

The Tagovailoa family is familiar with Sarkisian as the former USC head coach recruited Tua during his time with the Trojans. “Coach Sark, he’s good,” Taulia said. “He coached in the NFL and in college before.”

Taulia will head to Tuscaloosa and begin his career with the Tide this week. While his older brother has a firm grasp on the starting gig for next season, Taulia still plans to make it a competition this spring. “I’m going to make him work,” Tagovailoa said.

Watch: Alabama QB Taulia Tagovailoa tosses TD in Polynesian Bowl (BamaOnLine)

Taulia Tagovailoa finds Lincoln Victor at the back of the end zone. Team Mauka gets on the board but still trails Team Makai 20-7 with 3:28 left in the third quarter of the @polynesiabowl.
1:34 AM - Jan 20, 2019

Taulia Tagovailoa can officially close the book on a successful prep career and begin the next step at the University of Alabama. Tagovailoa tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Lincoln Victor with 4:13 left in the third quarter of Saturday's Polynesian Bowl, but it wasn't enough for Team Mauka during a 27-7 loss.

The 2019 Crimson Tide signee showed no ill effects from a shoulder injury suffered down the stretch his senior season, throwing for 166 yards on his 13-for-24 outing (with 2 interceptions). One of his picks came on misguided deep ball in the fourth quarter intended for fellow Alabama signee Jahleel Billingsley, according to AL.com.

Three additional Alabama players appeared in the game — top-ranked tailback Trey Sanders, defensive back Demarcco Hellams and pass rusher Khris Bogle. Sanders had a touchdown rush in the first quarter wiped away following a penalty while Hellams and Bogle were impactful on the other side of the ball. Bogle committed earlier this month, but hasn't signed.

Alabama's 2019 recruiting class is currently ranked No. 1 nationally, per the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings.

Tagovailoa is one of two quarterbacks Alabama has signed this cycle, joining four-star Paul Tyson, the great grandson of Paul 'Bear' Bryant.

“We were excited about both guys,” Saban said in December during the Early Signing Period. “They’re two really good quarterbacks here in the state. There are other good quarterbacks, too, but we were happy with the two we got. They were both very productive. They have great character. They have a lot of potential.

“Taulia had a lot of success and led his team to the state finals. I know he was banged up at the end of the year and it didn’t work out, but had some great games where he led his team to come from behind. We’re excited about him. Paul has been in a very successful program and very productive, great character. I’m happy we got both guys here. I think we should have at least four quarterbacks on scholarship. Five is OK, too. We’re kind of in the ballpark now.”

Following Jalen Hurts' transfer to Oklahoma, Alabama's scholarship quarterback room entering spring practice is as follows — Tua Tagovailoa, Mac Jones, Taulia and Tyson.

I don't know where Saint is, but I imagine he lost his mind over the no call towards the end of the New Orleans game If the Saints lose this, it will be one of the bigger screw jobs in history

Hate that the Saints lost. Barron goes forward and Ingram goes home. The No Call was a killer.

Actually two no calls. Horrible way to miss out on going to the Super Bowl. But was not impressed by Brees play at the end of the game. He was bad and Goff was great.
