4-star DE Jaren Handy decommits from LSU: ‘I just feel like I rushed my commitment’

quote:

Four-star defensive end Jaren Handy’s commitment to LSU lasted less than two weeks. Handy committed to LSU on March 4. But Thursday, Handy send out this tweet.

I really been thinking and praying about this Ik all this is sudden and unexpected I just feel like I rushed something????just PLEASE RESPECT MY DECISION!!!!!!! No interviews?? pic.twitter.com/rXMlXETLno

— Alm!ghty Turbo™??? (@Jarenhandy2) March 15, 2018

GN caught up with Handy a few minutes after his tweet.

“I’ve been praying about it and asking God to give me a sign, and I just feel like I rushed my commitment,” Handy told GN. “It was a real hard decision.”

Handy (6 feet 5, 260 pounds), from New Augusta (Miss.) Perry Central, is one of the top-10 strongside ends in the country and also is a top-100 prospect overall. He committed to the Tigers on a visit to Baton Rouge.

“LSU just felt different; it felt like a family,” he said. “It still feels that way and I don’t have any hard feeling towards LSU. They are still one of my top schools. I just feel like I rushed it.”

Handy plans on taking a lot of visits to SEC schools.

“My next visit is to Auburn, and I’m also looking at Alabama, Florida, Mississippi State and Ole Miss,” he said.

He said he has no timetable for his decision.

“I’m not going to make another quick decision,” he said. “I’m going to wait until it’s time to sign.”

Handy had this message for LSU fans.

“Please don’t be mad at me about the decision I made,” Handy said. “You never know – I might still come to LSU at the end of the day. I just feel like I rushed the commitment, but I still have love for LSU.”

John Emery Jr., Maurice Hampton headline LSU junior day visitors

quote:

Recruits expected to visit LSU

LSU is conducting another junior day on Saturday, which will be the third in a series of recruiting functions dating back to January.

During the January event, the staff hosted a select group of elite in-state prospects and two out-of-state priority targets in 4-star quarterback Grant Gunnell and 4-star wide receiver Jalen Curry. Last month, another impressive group of in- and out-of-state targets flooded to campus. Most notably, that list included 4-star Texas cornerback Marcus Banks and Mississippi products Jaren Handy, Zach Edwards and Charles Moore, not to mention 2020 Alabama athlete Kris Abrams-Draine. Three of those five recruits committed in the aftermath of that visit.

A handful of the state’s premier prospects returned to campus last Sunday as LSU kicked off spring practice. That included 5-star defensive tackle Ishmael Sopsher and 5-star cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., as well as 4-star wide receivers Trey Palmer and Devonta Lee, among others.

Coach Ed Orgeron and Co. are set for yet another recruiting weekend as the Tigers enter the second week of spring football practice. The group is comprised of notable out-of-state recruits and some in-state prospects on LSU’s board.

Here are some of the confirmed visitors expected to be on hand:

2019 prospects with offers

John Emery Jr., 4-star running back
Maurice Hampton, 4-star defensive back, Memphis, Tenn. (LSU commit)
Marcel Brooks, 4-star outside linebacker, Flower Mound, Texas
NaNa Osafo-Mensah, 4-star outside linebacker/defensive end, Fort Worth, Texas
Dylan Wright, 4-star wide receiver, Mesquite, Texas
Charles Turner, 3-star offensive lineman, Bradenton, Fla.

Notes: After making junior day visits to Oklahoma, Auburn and Michigan in recent weeks, Emery, the top-ranked running back in the state for 2019, is heading up to LSU for the Tigers’ junior day on Saturday. Emery, a priority target in this recruiting cycle, was unable to attend the Elite Junior Day designed for Louisiana’s premier talent. That’s not a cause for concern because the LSU staff knows where it stands with the New Orleans area prospect. Emery was a regular in Baton Rouge at this time a year ago as he began to develop a relationship with the staff. He returned for several games and has a keener familiarity with the in-state power than any other school. This weekend, he chose to visit LSU over another out-of-state trip to Miami.

This marks Hampton’s first visit back to Baton Rouge since taking in the Tigers’ convincing victory over Texas A&M last November. Rumblings about a potential flip to Mississippi State have been quelled after baseball coach Andy Cannizaro was removed from that position. Hampton, who’s committed to LSU in both football and baseball, chose to visit this weekend to attend the Tigers’ baseball series against Missouri and see what’s going on with spring football practice.

Brooks is making his first visit to LSU since naming the team a finalist along with Alabama. The nation’s No. 6-ranked outside linebacker unofficially visited Alabama last month, but there has been serious momentum in the Tigers’ favor recently. Brooks is a hybrid prospect capable of playing safety, linebacker and get after the passer. This will be the first opportunity to re-connect with the coaching staff since getting visits from defensive line coach Dennis Johnson during the contact period. Brooks will decide between LSU and Alabama on June 25, his birthday.

Staff turnover at Alabama gives Gators a shot with DB Brendan Gant

quote:

Brendan Gant plans to attend Gators spring game

Top-150 overall recruit Brendan Gant committed to Alabama three months ago, but he said his recruitment isn’t over yet.

The 4-star safety from Kathleen High School (Lakeland, Fla.) is still considering other programs and plans to use his five allotted official visits. He is ranked the nation’s No. 5 safety and No. 130 overall prospect in the 247Sports composite.

“I’m still enjoying the process and trying to take it all in,” Gant told SEC Country. “I’m committed, but I still got a lot of time. So I keep an open mind, but I never know what could happen in the future. At the end of the day, my final decision is going to be what’s best for my future.”

Gant’s future came into question less than a month after making his pledge to the Crimson Tide. His primary recruiter and future position coach at Alabama, Derrick Ansley, joined the Oakland Raiders staff on Jan. 11.

His departure has had an impact on Gant, who is now being recruited by Alabama offensive coordinator Mike Locksley.

“Coach Ansley, that’s who I was really talking to and we would have phone conversations like every day,” Gant said. “It’s been kind of different with him gone, but I’m still going through the process. Alabama hasn’t really been on me like they were at first.”

Gant said he plans to visit Alabama for its spring game on April 21. He took trips this month to Georgia, Georgia Tech and Miami, and he has a few more schools on his mind.

“Ohio State and Miami are recruiting me the hardest. They text me every day,” Gant said. “Clemson is kind of starting to come along. I talk to Coach [Dan] Mullen and the Florida coaches. I hear from Coach [Willie] Taggart every now and then.”

Gators tight ends coach Larry Scott is Gant’s primary recruiter and has been pursuing him along with Mullen. Florida linebacker and Kathleen alum Ventrell Miller also is recruiting his former teammate to Gainesville.

“Coach Scott and Coach Mullen tell me every day they want me to come up and they can’t wait to see me,” Gant said. “I know I’m going to the spring game for sure, but I’m not sure of other dates. We’re still trying to get that stuff together.

“But I’ve been hearing good things about them from Ventrell. He told me it’s way different at Florida now. Last year they used to goof and play around, but this year it’s more serious and he feels like they’re going to have a pretty good team.”

Florida visit helps Mohamoud Diabate determine major

The state of Alabama’s top-ranked linebacker, Mohamoud Diabate, made his first-ever visit to Florida on Wednesday.

The 4-star recruit from Auburn, Ala., told SEC Country he had great experience and called the university “an amazing place.” Diabate is big on academics and said one of Florida’s advisers gave him some valuable advice.

What was it?

“Helping me figure out my major,” Diabate said. “I want to be a petroleum engineer, and I was going to major in petroleum engineering itself. But talking to the adviser at Florida, they said it would be wiser to major in chemical engineering because with that degree you can do so many different things.

“Engineering itself is a growing field, so you’ll always have a job in the future. With that degree you can do things such as petroleum engineering. But if you’re not fond of that, you can shift to other things with that chemical engineering degree. That really helped mold my interest in the field.”

Diabate recently started doing research on potential majors and came across petroleum engineering as a career path. He said he knows there will be a large job market when his playing days are over.

“I’ve always had interest in working with my hands,” he said. “I’m good at solving problems and being a leader, so things like that I’m interested in. Also, the fact that petroleum engineering is a growing field really, really intrigued me.

“In the future, the amount of petroleum engineering jobs are supposed to double by 2035, so that really pulled me toward the field. Plus the fact that you get a good salary, so I’ll be able to take care of the things that I need in life.”

Top-200 overall LB Mohamoud Diabate enjoys first visit to Florida (SEC Country)

quote:

Top-200 overall recruit  Mohamoud Diabate visited Florida for the first time Wednesday.

The 4-star linebacker from Auburn, Ala., received an offer from the Gators two months ago and has been building a relationship with the coaching staff. After visiting Florida State on Tuesday, Diabate made the trip down to Gainesville with his parents in tow.

“It was a great experience being at Florida and checking out the facilities, the campus and talking to the coaches,” he told SEC Country. “ Florida has been recruiting me for a couple months. I’m interested in what they’re doing and what they could be in the future with the new coaches.

“I just wanted to check out the university because I’ve never been, so I decided to come down here for me family and check it out. They loved it, especially the education portion of the visit. They loved the campus and they thought it was an amazing place.”

Diabate said he wanted to see the education aspect of the college and learn more about the Gators’ 3-4 defense. After spending the day on campus and asking questions, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound prospect feels that Florida is a fit for him both academically and athletically.

“I talked to one of the advisors in the college of engineering and he gave me some valuable advice,” Diabate said. “We toured the academic center and it really impressed me. It was brand new and up to date. They had tutors and everything I would need as a student-athlete at the university. I was really happy with what I saw.

“The coaches answered all the football questions I had through film. Just seeing pure tape of the defense helped me understand what it’s about and what my position does. I’ll be the Will linebacker, so I’ll play on the weakside and on third downs I’ll rush the passer. Watching the film really helped me answer those questions.”

Diabate is ranked the nation’s No. 14 outside linebacker and No. 191 overall prospect in the 247Sports composite. He plans to make his decision during the early signing period and claims no leaders at this time, with offers from schools such as Alabama, FSU, LSU and Michigan.

Florida coach Dan Mullen, defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and defensive line coach Sal Sunseri are all recruiting Diabate in a group effort.

“I talked to Coach Mullen, Coach Grantham and Coach Sunseri on a regular basis. I’m talking to one of them almost every day,” Diabate said. “I have a good relationship with all three of them and I can tell that they want me to be part of the program. That makes me really happy and I’ll be back for another visit sooner or later.”

Does anyone have the scoop on lakia Henry. I saw him in the latest and greatest mock class. In a class heavy with LB's and a terrific shot to get nakobe, why go after him? Also that mock class had 5 DB's with three safeties. What gives ?

Who did the mock class? You got a link to it?

I expect Bama to do well in landing its top HS ILB targets. If so, then Henry may be less likely to end up in the class. But, it also depends a lot on how our younger LBs develop, potential injuries, and whether Mack Wilson leaves early. So, I do expect Bama to recruit Henry -- just in case. I think Bama may take 4-5 DBs, but not 3 safeties unless one of them can play CB too. Brandon Turnage and Noa Pola-Gates can play both.

Oil and gas engineering jobs aren’t exclusive to Petroleum either. I am a civil. And started in oil and gas. Lots of engineering disciplines needed in the industry.

The Top Targets list posted above is updated often and kept in the 2nd post of this thread.

About a week ago I added the hudl links. To fit within the board's post size limit, I had to shorten the hudl link addresses (the links still work), but I also had to take about six guys off the list.

Today I found a way to shorten the 247 player link addresses where they'll still work. That gave me enough room to add five guys. It is maxed out again now. It holds 52 players; about twice as many as we can sign. That's enough.

The list isn't simply the guys Bama wants the most, it's the top targets who also seem to be the more likely ones to choose Bama -- based mainly on visiting and what they say.

All players with UA offers are listed by position starting in the 3rd post of this thread. Some of the OLB offers are to guys listed as WDEs.

I found it:

Alabama Football: 15 names to pencil in for the 2019 signing class (Bama Hammer)

I answered your questions a few posts up about Lakia Henry and the three safeties. Turnage can play safety, CB & WR. Ron should've penciled in Vonta Bentley -- more likely than Trey Sanders at this point. Devonta Lee may be bit more likely than Christian Harris right now too. Otherwise, it's a very good list. The hurdle left with Harris is his dad visiting Bama with him -- probably for a spring practice or the first scrimmage.

Doesn't seem like Bama has turned the recruiting momentum around yet.

A lot of players saying they are being recruited harder by another school. That or another school offered them earlier, or they have a better relationship with coaches at another school.

Jus sayen.
