I prefer four but it should be six at the most with 1 and 2 getting a bye week. And it should start the week after conference championship games. And for the love of God, get rid of the committee.

There simply can't be expansion until the dust settles around expansion. What's the Big 12 going to look like? Things like that. How can you expand and have certain policies that specify the Power 5, when you don't even know who the power 5 are? Is the Big 12 still Power 5 when they lose their two biggest programs and add 4 schools that are not Power 5 schools?

You mean with having two teams both making the playoffs this year. Cincy not official but looks good for them. Or having BYU who beat Utah(Possible PAC12 champ) ranked 12th or a 11-1 ranked 21st Houston team they will be adding.

If those teams had already officially joined the BIG 12 many could make the argument that the BIG12 is the 3rd best conference in the country this year.

Which looks better right now. Them adding who they are or the SEC taking a 14th ranked OU without a coach and whose recruiting class is falling apart along with a very bad unranked Texas team?

I'm not saying one is better or worse or in the middle. What I'm saying is that until all the dust settles around conference expansion, there isn't likely to be a decision about playoff expansion. Oklahoma and Texas jumping ship is what brought playoff expansion talks to a screeching halt last time. If conference expansion has pretty much run its course, then perhaps playoff expansion will proceed.

It appears conference realignment triggered by SEC expansion is done and limited to the Big12, AAC, SBC and CUSA.

How different would the game Saturday be, if there were a 12 team CFP?

Still a conference title on the line, perhaps a bye in the first round.

They're trying to make things really more complicated than they need to be.

No matter what, expansion is going to devalue the best regular season in sports...and that's a shame.

Just pick something and stick with it...tired of everything having to be "tweaked" annually. First it was the BCS computer models every year...now it's the format of the playoff.

Hopefully they'll at least have the first round games on the campus of the higher seeded team.

If they do 12, the top 4 seeds get 1st round byes and the #5-8s get the 1st round home games. Screw that. Keep it simple: Top 8, no auto-bids, no byes, #1-4s get 1st round home games.

The top 8 this year would be terrible. Let’s say every higher ranked team wins their conference title game this Saturday. You probably get:

1) Georgia
2) Michigan
3) Cincinnati
4) Oklahoma State

5) Alabama - Would have just lost to a top 4 team in UGA and would have to potentially rematch them two games later
6) Notre Dame - Would rematch a team they already lost to
7) Ohio State - Would rematch a team they already lost to just two games ago.
8) Oregon

Other than Oregon, all that system does is give teams unwarranted mulligans. You have 8 teams sitting at 2 losses, so the committee is just picking the bigger brands to throw in there at 7 and 8.

At least in the 12 system, the top 4 are rewarded with byes, and you get some intrigue from a team like Wake or Pitt making it for the first time.

How is 8 with no auto-bids better than 4?

As I already indicated, I think the current Top 4 format is better than expansion. The main goals of CFP expansion are broader fan interest and more CFP TV revenue. But any expansion format is likely to mainly enable mulligans, rematches and/or blowouts. Tbh, I doubt playoff expansion will actually benefit college football. Imo, it's more likely to devalue both the CFP and the regular season.
