Pac-12 commish candidates I’ve heard: Ohio St AD Gene Smith, Stanford AD Bernard Muir, former West Virginia AD (and NCAA exec) Oliver Luck, Alabama AD Greg Byrne. ASU’s Ray Anderson could make a push. Feeling is league needs someone who knows campuses, has built-in relationships.
Would hate to lose him. Feel like he is the 1st AD we have had that at least tries in other sports but Football

That's a pretty strong list they've got. I don't know if any of these guys would take the job.
Maybe the pay is the better but the competitive aspect of being an AD seems like a big plus to me. Oliver Luck seems like he'd be a great conference commissioner.
I don't agree with this. Battle tried at basketball and baseball. Not trying would've been to just keep Grant and Gaspard. He just didn't understand those sports well and made poor hires because of it.

Oliver Luck,
This is the guy they should hire.

He sat on his hands and let Auburn hire Pearl when his son was making it known Pearl wanted the job....because Anthony was a Good Guy. And then made a terrible hire.
He hire GOOF who in only 1 year destroyed our baseball team.
Women’s sports across the board started to decline under him.
And Worst of all he almost lost Saban to Texas.
Battle quite literally SUCKED

If Oliver Luck was available they’d be stupid not to go for him.

Eh Avery wasn't terrible. Pearl was significantly better, sure. However Battle was going to bring Grant back and Avery basically fell into his lap. He wasn't about to have a big search.

That and the whole Nike contract debacle. It is costing us 10s of millions of dollars.

Someone had to practically hold a gun to his head to get him to fire Grant and Gaspard was running afoul of NCAA rules and nearly fired himself. Not to mention he managed to turn the struggling baseball program into an absolute dumpster fire in a single season. Bohannon is still rebuilding. And don’t forget getting Bama fleeced by Nike.
Battle may have had good intentions but he was a shitty AD by any measure, one of the worst ever. The only thing he didn’t manage to frick up was Saban and the football program. How that man ever got rich is a mystery to me.

Now they’re trying to raid our AD? Jesus. We should pay Byrne whatever he wants to stay. He’s been great

So you're just going to ignore the fact that Battle was publicly led around by the nose by Gregg Marshall and allowed himself to be punked by fricking Wichita State? It was a blessing in disguise in hindsight obviously because Marshall makes Bob Knight look like a hippie guidance counselor, but your recollection of events is not even remotely accurate.

Surprised to hear the left coast conference would even acknowledge the existence of someone employed in the State of Alabama.

That’s almost an impossible job.
The west coast doesn’t care about college athletics and the commissioner is trying to compete with conferences where the fans still do.
Half the ADs out there are more concerned with social issues than competing for championships in major sports.

I wouldn’t call Avery a terrible hire. While he didn’t do well, he brought some much needed energy to the program at the time and left Oats with some good players- Kira, Herb, Petty. Avery had some clear deficiencies, and we were right to move on. He wasn’t terrible though.

I wouldn’t call this “not trying.”

Curry would be a Battle hire correct? She seems pretty good. I don’t really know what y’all expect the AD to do with regard to Murphy. Duckworth may need to go, but I think the gymnastics program was bound to decline with Patterson leaving.

I think he was bad too. I don’t agree with “not trying” though.

It happens. Connections, family money as a primer, luck. I’ve met multimillionaires who are flat out retarded.

Coach Bryant was also the Athletic Director, just saying...
Let Saban test the waters until retirement. Saban transitioning from HC to full time AD at some point into the future would crush the souls of some on the Rant. Him attracting the best coaches in the country and holding ALL responsible for their successes and failures would be a sight to behold.
Joking aside, hope we hold onto Byrne. He has done very well IMO.

Saban's CEO style would certainly be interesting, but I can't imagine him rolling up to a women's softball game and shaking hands or handing out his business card like Byrne does.
The modern AD is a PR and fundraising machine, which is somewhat of a stark contrast to old-school coaches.

That's an understatement. He's an incredible fundraiser and the two big hires he has made (Oats and Bohannon) were both fantastic. He's arguably the best AD in the country. We should pay whatever we have to to keep him if that's what it takes.

As a former swimmer, I absolutely don't feel this way... at all. He didn't rehire jonty skinner, a fricking legend at bama. Dude was the resident national team coach for 6 years, director of usa swimming another 8 years... on top of what he's done at bama. Byrne brings in a guy who went to Arizona, quits in a season.5. We replace him with a woman, who has 0 head coaching experience... and also went to Arizona. I don't particularly share the view swimming for Arizona is the most desirable trait for a coach.

I think a couple of those guys would have to fall through for it to get to Byrne.

I hope someone is left to turn out the lights after this offseason

We better pony up whatever cash we have to keep Byrne. He's the best AD in America.
