Looking back, what game stands out to you as the most dominant defensive performance?
The two that come to mind for me immediately are the 2011 National Title Game vs LSU and the 2016 National Title Game vs. Clemson.

All I know is I don’t think we’ll ever see a defense giving up only 8 points per game. Those days are over.

You're probably right, but the game moves in cycles. You never know...

Outside of the Saban era and not including the GOAT defense crushing Miami in 92'. I'd say the 2005 defense shutting down Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl.

I was just about to post that

That 2005 defense was legit. It's interesting to note that in the years where our offense was abysmal, our defense has generally really stepped up big.

The 9-6 game preceeding that was unreal.

I'm 2003, as bad as Alabama was, what they did to that Oklahoma offense was pretty damn impressive

1990 third Sat in October was a good day for the D playing the 3rd ranked Vols, 9-6. Everyone remembers the FG but...
Gave up 6 points, secured 3 turnovers and held Tenn under 180 yards.

1999 defense vs Florida in the SECCG should get mention. No Spurrier Florida offense was ever abused like that

It gets overlooked sometimes, because our offense wasn't much better, but the 1988 game against Penn State at Legion Field was a defensive masterpiece. PSU's QB, Tony Sacca, was 8 of 28 for 98 yards (and sacked five times, including three by Derrick Thomas -- one for a safety when Derrick knocked him down by swatting him on top of the helmet), and they only ran for 71 yards. They were 0/14 on third down.
In the 1985 Aloha Bowl, Alabama held USC to less than 200 yards of offense. It was one of the few games where Cornelius Bennett and Derrick Thomas were able to play together, and I seem to recall the USC coach after the game saying something like "I've never seen two players completely dominate a game like that before."

2011 NCG and 2017 Sugar Bowl vs Clemson
Also that whole stretch in 05 from Florida until LSU.
Also the 93 Sugar Bowl vs Miami. Completely shut those fools down. Only TD they score was on a Punt

Definitely agree with the shutout of LSU in the NCG, and with the dismantling of Miami -- I think I read somewhere that Torretta later admitted he barely remembered any of the second half of that game.
In addition, I'd go with pretty much the entire 1979 season. Or, since the post said best performance in a game, "just about any game you care to name from the 1979 season." So yeah, I did cheat just a little bit there.

2017 Sugar Bowl vs Clemson
Underrated defensive performance
Held Clemson to 188 yards, 3.4 yds / pass play, 1.9 yds / run play, 2 TOs, and 1 TD. Almost outscored the Clemson on their own. Clemson crossed midfield only 4x in that game. 2 of them ended in FGs, 1 in an INT (Payne), and the other a turnover on downs late when the game was pretty much over.
Clemson’s offense wasn’t elite that year but they were still good (20th in S&P+ ratings).

Bill Oliver had the defense all in his head. Bringing all 11 to the LoS pre- snap scarred Torretta for life.

Semi final game in 2016 against Washington. That was a defensive slugfest from both teams. Washington was very rugged on defense, too. The game came down to a few big plays that busted the game open. Definitely not the prettiest offensive performance but it was a gritty, hard hitting game.

Corso said, “like a high school team going against ........”. Played our assets off.
The National Championship game against Miami was the best defensive performance I’ve ever seen. It was complete chaos for Miami. A thing of fricking beauty. My gosh

Capitol One Bowl against Michigan State. Pretty sure Courtney Upshaw destroyed their whole QB room.
I'd love to hear what those MSU players thought after that arse kicking.

I mean...they punted on 4th and goal at one point

Been a bunch through the years but the ones that stand out to me most are: 1992 Miami NCG and 2011 LSU NCG. Both suffocating performances that allowed our good, but not great offenses to get the job done. Man, I miss those types of defenses!
